Looking at how the MSM has gotten lazy, ratings crazed and in bed with corporations (not to mention serving their parent corporations), I think the growth of the internet for news and opinion has been fueled by their declining lack of standards, investigative journalism and independence. People don’t trust the MSM the way they used to and that’s a good thing. They turn to the internet but that too is vulnerable to corruption as we have seen. The down side is that the MSM has become corrupt and can’t and shouldn’t be blindly trusted again after the march to war in Iraq (for which they all pounded the drums) and cowardice throughout the Bush years. The up side is that these internets tubes provide a medium and platform that allows people of reason to speak out on issues and seek truth alongside those who want to obscure the truth. Once the corporations took over networks, news was required to be another profit center. Truth is not necessarily interesting at times, it doesn’t get the highest ratings or bring in the ad bucks. So for networks and cable news, “Truth” was canceled. This is a public site and has been from the beginning, all people and all opinions are sought and respected. As you point out, opposing opinions on issues and political beliefs do not make someone a troll (or I would be one!). The very reason for starting up PlanetPOV was to have a place that truly respects Freedom of Expression no matter how unpopular or individualistic an opinion is and it will always continue to be such a place. When I talk about trolls, I talk about people who only post comments to spew hatred. IMO, trolls are those who launch vicious personal attacks at other members and spout lies and extremist propaganda with the sole intent of creating havoc at a “liberal” site. When that is allowed, you end up with a situation as is evidenced at Huffington Post…lots of hate-filled posts and lots of censorship. Like most sites that try to have civil discourse, there are rules here to keep conversations productive and respectful but there is also a kind of ACLU philosophy here that means we will also protect the right of people to have opinions that may upset others or even a majority. I agree with everyone else here, my answer is absolutely not. As some have mentioned, trolls don’t challenge us intellectually, they are just garbage spewing, emotionally damaged people who, like arsonists, thrive on the power they feel when they light a fire and see so many people affected. Critical thinking and reason isn’t strengthened by yelling at racists and haters and liars or by ridiculing them. Instead, it is a major distraction from using our energies to convince the undecided on genuine issues. And I say this as someone who wasted a lot of time slapping down trolls at HuffPo. It simply denigrates debate, HuffPo is proof of that. Look at the level of “debate” there and the heavy handed censorship that accompanies such an environemnt. That’s why we started up PlanetPOV, to have a place for people who sincerely care about the world they’re living in to openly express themselves and have honest and open conversations and debates. They’ll have to find another Planet because there’s no home for them on this one. » Posted By AdLib On October 26, 2009 @ 11:04 pm Indeed, the strategy from the beginning was for Obama NOT to link himself to the health care bill so Repubs couldn’t use the anti-Obama paint brush on it. Instead, they came up with Death Panels, Kill Granny, Sex Clinics in High Schools, Government Takeover…but they couldn’t tie the racism and hatred of Obama directly to it…not that they didn’t try by calling it Obamacare (copying their “Hillarycare” campaign in the 90’s). The big picture was, try to get a bill before the recess so Repubs couldn’t use the recess to mess with public opinion. When they missed that deadline, they said, let them go nuts, who’s going to believe that we want to kill grannies. That was a minor mistake, too many elderly dimwits did believe the Death Panel thing and support dropped for reform and the public option. The upside was that the loonies on the right were taking over the fight and turning off anyone with a full set of teeth. What Obama and his team decided was, okay, we messed up a bit and lost the battle in the Summer but we will wait to use our strengths in the fall, speaking to the nation in a joint session and campaigning on all media to win in the end. Obama wasn’t shy about claiming the Stimulus Bill, he made a concerted effort not to insist on anything in health care reform because the kneejerk reactions of GOP jerks would have been to march against that. He didn’t give them the target they wanted, that was smart. Still, that DLCer Rahm, like others in the DLC, has been very comfortable about selling out the people and the public option as long as it means Dems keep control and keep getting corporate donations. So, it hasn’t all been brilliant and planned out to make the public option a reality but it is looking very good right now thanks to some of the foresight by Obama. » Posted By AdLib On October 26, 2009 @ 11:20 pm That’s why I think the Opt Out is great because I don’t know that it will be practical politically for most GOP politicians to make it happen. What’s too bad is that innocent, public plan supporting people in all those southern states, such as yourself, could be harmed by the opt out if a state does choose it. Though, with how that will harm those states and make them less financially competitive, it would be satisfying on some level to see them reversing themselves and opting back in. I actually think the Opt-Out aspect is less problematic for people in Red States than any other conditional plan. As you say, when local politicians have to face their constituency, instead of how they can ignore them when they’re in DC, they may change their tune as quickly. Remember how Jindal and other Repubs attacked the stimulus and claimed they wouldn’t accept the money? Then, when it came, they stage big press events to show off giving promotional size checks out. I think it will be the same way with Opt Out.
