What is a “Real” American?

Kalima, Just a joke. Really. I meant no offense to it.

I was watching the Daily Show last night and they had John Oliver over in England for the wedding.

Making fun of it the whole time. And John Oliver is British. They reported that a recent poll showed that an overwhelming 80% didn’t think the wedding was such a great idea. They did a few in the street interviews and the people didn’t sound too excited.

So I’m just poking fun. Putting myself in their shoes. In these tough times I wouldn’t want this shoved in my face either. But you have to. They closed off half of London just to have it.

Watching a Royal Wedding in England at 3 in the morning?

Yeah.

» Posted By ADONAI On April 29, 2011 @ 2:25 pm

Do you value other’s opinions but always consider yours to be the superior one? Well, you’re an American.

Do you feel like a comfortable life is entitled to you despite never having contributed to the well being of the republic? Well, you’re an American.

Do you feel that foreign cultures and customs are not just strange but possibly evil? Well, you’re an American.

Do you fawn over useless “royals” while tax money is frittered away to suspend them in constant luxury? Well, you’re probably British in this case, but you could just be watching CNN at 3 in the morning.

Does your racism sometimes interfere with your bigotry? Well, you’re an American.

Do you throw away entire plates of uneaten food simply because the seasoning was “a tad much”? Well, you’re an American.

Do you try your best everyday to deal with the constant give and take, knowing you won’t always succeed, and leave a better country than you found? Well, you’re an American.

The Daily Planet, Vol. 66

The Enterprise thing is funny but, like they said, they buy ads with NBC/Universal, not Donald Trump. But, if they were really concerned, they’d ask NBC to stop running their ads on that particular site.

I’ve been reading about the PSN hacking for days now. Again, it’s hilarious. Let’s say it was the group Anonymous. Whom Sony got in a bit of a tiff with a little while back. They’re not going to do anything with the info they stole. What use do they have for credit card numbers since they try to run a legit outfit(aside from the illegal hacking of course). And what are they gonna do with the names, addresses, and phone numbers of millions of 13 year old kids and 20 year old college students? If it was another group(Black Code, CLT, etc) there is a chance they could sell the info to solicitors. Which is super annoying. But not fatal. I’m just glad I went with X-Box. Hope Sony follows through with something good regarding the “goodwill gesture” to subscribers they mentioned.

It’s bad though that the economy has to take another hit just for people to see that Republicans don’t know what the hell they’re doing.

I know there is no statute of limitations on murder, and I would love to know the truth almost as much as those who knew and loved him, but I gotta think the time to ever find out what really happened to Malcolm X is long past. And I’m not pointing fingers but, I gotta believe the FBI doesn’t want this brought back up either. Even though I think they had nothing to do with it, they come off pretty bad the whole way through. But they were doing a high volume of sneaky, unlawful shit in a lot of places in the 60’s.

And if you’re anti torture you really can’t lead the military. We GOTTA torture! Freedom and all that.

Another great issue of my favorite internet newspaper. Awesome job Cher.

Atheism

jkk, If I can expand on Caru’s reply a bit, there is a certain mathematical elegance to the way everything moves and reacts in the universe but, over all, it is a very random chaotic place. That is the main thing that keeps me from putting total faith in a GOD as defined by modern religion.

And Caru is right in that very small changes in how the universe came together would nullify our existence. Even if a tiny chunk of the matter that made the universe were removed, the uniformity we perceive wouldn’t exist. Like wise if just a little more were added. I’m not a big believer in coincidence either, everything happens for a reason, but we do seem to be lucky to be here.

We landed in just the right spot, at just the right distance from our star, with Jupiter in just the right place to protect us from mos t of the asteroids wandering by. It does seem like we were placed here knowingly. And we seem to be alone in our neighborhood. You would think we would have found a signal from our closest neighbors by now. Unless they’re way behind us.

But I don’t think we will ever answer any of the bigger questions till we find someone else out there looking for those answers too.

» Posted By ADONAI On May 2, 2011 @ 9:19 pm

Caru, good question. I guess there isn’t much dogma to actually practice.

» Posted By ADONAI On May 2, 2011 @ 9:08 pm

As a non practicing Deist, I pretty much live in a world between atheism and religion.

I have a strong belief in a higher intelligence, a higher plane, a possible “architect”(or architects) of the universe. But I’m not entirely sure.

As much as I reject organized religion and a belief in an active , human like GOD, I also reject most scientific theory claiming to know the beginning of the universe.

Mostly because I doubt a creature as tiny and insignificant as human beings, who are barely aware of the universe they inhabit, can be absolutely sure about a goddamn thing.

What pops up more in human history? Right or wrong? Wrong. By a landslide. Right only emerges after wrong has had it’s way with the place.

Absolute atheism and absolute zealotry are incompatible with a universe than knows no absolutes. There are no impossibilities. Only improbability. There is knowledge and there is wisdom. Too many confuse them.

The Daily Planet, Vol. 63

This is just the beginning. It’s all up to the people now.

Until I researched that piece on McCarthy, I had never really comprehended just how much the Republican Party hates the New Deal and everything that came from it. How much they loathe the social progress made in the 60’s.

They want it all. They want to take it all back and give it to their rich friends. I would bring up shame, but it seems to be absent from these proceedings.

Giving Corporations the Death Penalty

AdLib, Because we allow them to be my friend. Because we allow them to be.

This country and every entity attached to it, only has the power we allow it to have. No more. No less.

The great thing about democracy is, everyone has a voice.

The terrible thing about democracy is, everyone has a voice.

“The money powers prey upon the nation in times of peace and conspire against it in times of adversity. It is more despotic than a monarchy, more insolent than autocracy, and more selfish than bureaucracy. It denounces as public enemies, all who question its methods or throw light upon its crimes. I have two great enemies, the Southern Army in front of me and the Bankers in the rear. Of the two, the one at my rear is my greatest foe.. corporations have been enthroned and an era of corruption in high places will follow, and the money powers of the country will endeavor to prolong its reign by working upon the prejudices of the people until the wealth is aggregated in the hands of a few, and the Republic is destroyed.”
~Abraham Lincoln

“All the perplexities, confusion and distress in America arise not from defects in the Constitution or Confederation, not from a want of honor or virtue so much as from downright ignorance of the nature of coin, credit and circulation.”
–John Adams

Call me crazy but, I don’t think they wanted corporations to have the rights they seem to think they’re entitled. Should have figured it out though. Any rich people invoking our nation’s finest leaders are most likely severely misrepresenting them.

» Posted By ADONAI On April 26, 2011 @ 9:04 pm

Pocket, while I can’t disagree with you, I just don’t know if the same principles we use to teach economics can be used to help people deal with anger.

The same laziness you speak of fuels anger. It’s so much easier to be angry. But then again, life is, by nature, difficult. The fact most people aren’t angry all day every day is something to be proud of I think. Still, anger is just easier. Anger and hatred tend to be liberating for people. And if that person already has an overdeveloped sense of self importance or moral certitude, look out! When you fall to anger, let rage consume you, you throw away everything that makes us human. But a lot of times it feels good. And that’s the trap.

“He who makes a beast of himself gets rid of the pain of being a man.”

» Posted By ADONAI On April 26, 2011 @ 2:46 pm

Thank you foxisms.

I too feel we have the tools and ability right now to really make a “Heaven on Earth” and fear very much holds us back. But fear of the unknown is as old as time.

I think people just fear being left behind. That’s why change can be so difficult for them.

» Posted By ADONAI On April 26, 2011 @ 1:46 pm

Pocket,I agree with you. Love, taken to an extreme, can be just as devastating as hate. And sometimes those signals get crossed. I think that is our biggest problem. Not the emotions, but the will to control them.

Apathy is a devastating thing, I agree. I don’t think it ties into sociopathy as much as lack of empathy though. All measures of people can exhibit great apathy toward a seemingly emotional situation. Me included. But I’m still capable of tremendous empathy.

Empathy is the ability to connect emotionally with someone. The key to compassion. Intense hate very often dulls our ability to feel empathy, and can make suffering very easy to inflict.

Caru, interesting.

I guess if you steal just to have stuff, it really is. In my case, I rarely keep half the shit I steal. I usually give it away.

But I can’t believe I didn’t think of it that way since it is so very obvious.

» Posted By ADONAI On May 5, 2011 @ 12:37 pm

david, good questions.

The Constitution, as a document of law, cannot be evil or good in and of itself. It doesn’t really lay out all the laws of our land so much as provide the groundwork to make those determinations ourselves. Nothing in the Constitution should ever be taken as set in stone. It is a series of amendments. Not a series of statutes. It is this flexibility in the Constitution that is it’s greatest strength and it’s greatest weakness. Mirroring the democracy it founded. You can’t please all the people all the time, but you should at least try not to shit on them.

It differs from religious doctrine in that you can’t really have that flexibility with dogma. The Catholic Church tries but it wins them as many enemies as fans. The flexible laws of men should never be compared to the inflexible mandate of a deity though. It’s unfair to both parties. But people should understand that the inconsistencies between the Old and New Testament are deliberate. They should never have been viewed as companion documents anyways. What is evil for practitioners of Judaism may not be evil for Christians and vice versa.

Torture is never justified. I don’t care if it prevents World War 3. And since nothing of value has ever come from torture, even during the Hundred Years War, French soldiers couldn’t get a goddamn thing of value from their torturing on either side. The info to find Bin Laden came over 6 months AFTER we had stopped torturing these people. We just talked to them. Sure it was still an interrogation style talk, but still, just talking. And it got us the most wanted man on Earth. When Sherman wanted info on Southern troop movements he quit torturing and started interrogating prisoners. A month later he was burning Atlanta. It doesn’t work and it’s pure evil.

I believe the ends justify the means. But not when those ends make the means irrelevant. You cannot protect hope with fear.

» Posted By ADONAI On May 4, 2011 @ 1:37 pm

wts, I feel the same way. I think maybe Plato was asserting that it is so much easier to do evil. That evil is all around us, tempting us, and many times people can’t find the good to do away with it.

I believe that. Human emotion takes us places we would normally never go and evil becomes so much more appealing to us. Only after the fact do many of us realize just what we’ve done.

There are terrible things happening in the world all the time. But as long as there is good, somewhere, it will never truly win. as Yoda said, the dark side isn’t stronger, just easier and more seductive.

» Posted By ADONAI On May 4, 2011 @ 1:20 pm

Indeed KT. And not just Jews. They killed people of all races and gay people as well. The mentally handicapped and the crippled.

As you said, anything they didn’t view as a perfect Aryan.

» Posted By ADONAI On May 3, 2011 @ 7:01 pm

KT, very much so. But, in my opinion, that makes them even more evil. To me there is nothing worse than proclaiming to save humanity by destroying it. It may be all justified in their heads but even on a level away from morality and evil, there is no justification or reason for mass slaughter. A useless and unproductive activity that only brings more grief than you could possibly solve with it. So, evil or not, they were definitely counterproductive to the human race.

I actually enjoy society and have an interest in it’s stability. It gives me the space to enjoy the debauchery I so love. Any hindrance to that is a great evil in my eyes. But that is a purely selfish motive I admit.

» Posted By ADONAI On May 3, 2011 @ 4:19 pm

Thank you Abby! And I had no idea what Wicked was about but now I am very interested.

The reason I could call OBL evil is because he did in fact coordinate efforts to destroy thousands of innocent lives and never once showed remorse for it. He reportedly stated many times that his goal was to pull America into an intractable conflict and make us turn on ourselves.

You can’t be a freedom fighter if you are an affront to the very concept of freedom. Hamas are more freedom fighters than Bin Laden. Even if it may just be to gain their favor, they still take care of most of the civilian populace around them. The Founders committed acts of terrorism against English and German soldiers but I can’t think of many instances where they intentionally targeted civilian populations. Of course the war was fought across many farms and cities but they tried to keep citizens out of it. Bin Laden always appeared to have no regard for civilian death tolls. To most this is morally reprehensible and absolutely evil. But that would just be my argument. It is indeed about perspective.

And thank you for bringing up lying. That is another one for me that seems morally ambiguous. Lies can lead to great evil but lies can also protect and do great good. Deception. A necessity of war or self preservation. No one is going to begrudge German citizens who lied to Nazi officers about hiding Jewish citizens. Anyone who says lying is always wrong is dealing in absolutes and I don’t think you can do that.

The View From the Left Hemisphere of the Universe

wts, I believe I get where you are coming from. To be honest I didn’t care for The GOD Delusion. I got about a quarter of the way through it and felt insulted. And, as I’ve said before, I’m not very religious.

It’s fine to disagree but to pretend that there is something wrong with people of faith was just too much. Many do have an absolute faith in science and I don’t think absolutes exist. There is a huge debate going on right now in the scientific community concerning the Big Bang. When you listen to these people argue and bicker about abstract concepts they have no current way of proving and acting like it’s legitimate science, you can’t help but see the hypocrisy.

Several of their equations only work because they are substituting values in with no definition to make them work. lots of scientists and mathematicians do it. It’s not cheating, just admitting that you don’t know. Most of these theories don’t make it vary far.

» Posted By ADONAI On April 24, 2011 @ 8:16 pm

chaz, I agree that there are no absolutes in the universe. No impossibilities.

But it does seem to have a beautiful mathematical elegance about it.

» Posted By ADONAI On April 24, 2011 @ 3:20 pm

Damn wts, where’d this come from! What a fantstic article! A true joy to read! Now for my scathing comments! 🙂

I love the elegance you used to describe evolution. Darwin would have been proud my friend. I hope you don’t mind if I add a bit to the piece in the comments section. I do not want to step on any toes.

Modern science had it’s birthplace in the tiny island of Ionia. Ionian philosophy and science basically built the science we know today. Ionians conducted experiments, and developed the tools and methods that spread throughout Greece and the world. Ionia never gets respect! Aristotle and Socrates and everyone was great but they didn’t believe in the scientific method. This was the problem with many Greek mainland “scientists”, they did not experiment. They felt reason alone was enough to draw the proper conclusion. We today know that it isn’t. Your eyes can deceive you and warp your reason.

Speaking of eyes, what a beautiful explanation for sight. And really not all that wrong. Food and self preservation probably wasn’t the only driving factor behind how our eyes developed. Predators have front set eyes to better gauge distance and depth. Prey have eyes set closer to the sides of the head to allow for a wider field of vision. Nature at it’s best.

The human brain is odd too. Basically a reptile brain with a more advanced model sat on top. The brain needed protein to evolve. We provided that when our ancestors presumably began running out of food and started eating meat. The human brain instantly gave our ancestors the ability to reason on a level not before seen on Earth. Before us, the closest nature got to higher intelligence was raptors and a few primates. And the brain just continued to grow. Your brain is actually larger than your skull. All those little wrinkles is your brain curled up to save space. Once again, nature at it’s best.

Where we disagree I think, is in the importance of science and it’s history. I’ve never been under the impression that moderns science was arrogant. At least no more than the rest of us. For all the theories science has today, they put a million a piece in the graveyard. Some scientists stubbornly, perhaps arrogantly, cling to their theories. Einstein was no different. Stephen Hawking as well, who has confessed errors in the past. A new theory comes along and replces it because the math fits it better.

MATH.That is the big thing that is left out when science is discussed. Numbers do not lie. They can be misrepresented by others but they do not lie. If the equations don’t work, your theory is on shaky ground. Ready to be replaced by the one that matches the numbers. It doesn’t get more reasoned than that. Even if science answers a thousand questions in the next 100 years, the biggest question still greatly exceeds their grasp: Why? Look at the universe. Why? And that involves the concept of the beginning. Good luck to anyone who tries to explain that. Which is why so few theorists do. ‘Cause, at this point in time, it will always be just a theory.

Human conscience. I’m not touching that one. The brain is a giant clump of sugar and protein with electricity running through it. WTF?!
