Up until now, though there has been a degree of polarization between Hillary and Bernie supporters, a majority of Bernie supporters appear to be okay with voting for Hillary if she is the eventual nominee. Superdelegates were added to Democratic primaries after non-establishment candidates George McGovern and Jimmy Carter beat out establishment candidates in 1972 and 1976. It was and is a ploy to allow Democrat elites to overrule Dem voters.
