Just after proving themselves to be unreliable and misguided fear peddlers who got just about every prediction about the election wrong, the media dashes ahead today with a new set of false memes, brimming with the same unjustified confidence.
Thankfully for them, there is never an apology needed for having fed the public artificial and contrived “worries” that had no basis in truth or reality.
It was not legit when they questioned if Joe Biden would be replaced on Obama’s ticket with Hillary. It was not probable or likely that Obama would win the Electoral College but lose the popular vote. It was just plain dishonest to claim that Obama’s long term leads in most swing states were “toss ups” because they were within the margin of error. And the list goes on…
But being a corporate news outlet means never having to say you’re sorry…or ever having to stop saying “BOO!” to the American public. Anything they do in pursuit of manipulating Americans to watch their channels and increase their ad revenue, is apparently fulfilling their interpretation of the 1st Amendment.
So here we are, the day after an election took place that they almost uniformly denied would happen the way it did…despite a preponderance of polls saying it would happen exactly as it did…and…they’re ba-a-ack, with a new set of dishonest and slanted memes.
Here are some of the memes going around in the media today…from the same sources who promised you a “razor tight” election night:
MEME 1. Now that President Obama has been chosen by Americans to lead the nation, he must bow down to the Republicans in Congress and do the things that they want to prove that he is “bipartisan”.
TRUTH: President Obama is the one with the mandate from the people, he is the winner. The Republicans have been rejected nationally, in Senate and House races as well, the onus is on them to compromise and move towards Obama’s positions or face losing their seats in 2014.
MEME 2. The makeup of Congress has stayed pretty much the same. The American people have thus said, they want things to remain as they are.
TRUTH: House races are local races and the voters who decide them are not interchangeable with all other voters. Just because Michele Bachmann squeaked out a win, it doesn’t mean the majority of Americans wanted her to win. Richard Mourdock and Todd Akin lost, showing extremists were being rejected by voters. Meanwhile real Progressives like Elizabeth Warren were elected. The makeup of The Senate is actually meaningfully more Progressive and stronger Democratic. Right wing extremists like Joe Walsh and Allen West lost in the House and were replaced by moderates and Progressives, that changes The House.
Congress has changed and reflects change, it is not “pretty much the same”.
MEME 3. The GOP will go through some soul searching to figure out how they can change their policies to appeal to the rising demographics that defeated him.
On the periphery of the GOP, there is some chatter about the GOP appealing to Latinos and younger voters. However, the voices from the power centers of the GOP are loudly and clearly stating that their losses have nothing to do with their principles which they believe are righteous and shouldn’t be touched, it was all about poor messaging and a poor messenger.
The GOP Elite and their Bagger core don’t see any problem with their message, they just think everyone else is ignorant or has been brainwashed. So, their takeaway is, “We just need to find better ways to manipulate Latinos and younger voters into voting against their own interests and supporting our plutocratic/religious extremist agenda…just as we have done with poor white rural voters.”
The MSM Meme Factory is chugging away at full speed but after being exposed through yesterday’s election as being wrong most of the time and focused most in whipping up people than reporting the truth, folks out there should from now on take such pronouncements with a boulder of salt.

Trump is calling for revolution and marching on the White house while you have TeaParty Patriots blaming their losses on ‘other ‘ republicans and or different factions of the TeaParty.
Herman Cain, Brian Fischer of the Religious/Social Right and Rush calling for a third party.
And the question: “Were Romney and the GOP too conservative or not conservative enough?” lingering around in the halls.
I wonder if a “convention” of some sort won’t be called by one or two faction’s this fall, or will the GOP stumble along into the same party with just a minor adjustment?
What will it be? A complete make over or a hair trim and anew pair of gym shoes? Something in between? It may be interesting.
The media voice with its myriad social media inputs and outputs is a voice of what-ifs, anxieties, hypotheticals and political hypochondria without a core discipline of investigative mettle to distinguish whether any of those neurotic assumptions are valid. They routinely ask EASY questions on both sides. Rachel Maddow may be the exception. But it seems she has few guests she can spar with.
The big joke is the assumption that the GOP will soul search. I agree, they will double down on their manipulative branding nature and continue to externalize blame leaving themselves utterly un-self-examined. Perhaps the only “conservative” media voice that appears to reflect is David Brooks who has ben making forays into the psychological in his more recent editorials. I doubt many of the GOP read him or use him.
Rigid, mean, petty people who tend not to update their files and who are entrenched in the ways they defend themselves against psychic pain don’t all of a sudden have crises of consciousness and then seek novel, i.e. more healthful and new approaches to figure things out. They will go about handling it the way they usually do. But then it is up to us people to remind them and stay as involved as we were when we righteously and indignantly marched to vote and waited in line to have our voices heard.

Myth: Obama only won because of demographics is a lazy minded meme because that’s just the manifestation of what we see and not the whole reasoning behind it. Now if you call one demographic people that vote for their self interests and another demographic people that vote against their self interests I would agree more with the demographic theory being the whole reason Obama won. In other words Democrats vote much more consistently with their self interests than Republicans do. For example African Americans don’t vote for Dems mostly because of racial identity even with an AA candidate. I guarantee you most AAs did not vote for teabagger Allen West. AAs vote for Dems because about 90% of AAs believe in Democratic institutions like Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, civil rights etc… The same with the Latino vote and add in the issue of immigration where Dems are much more in line with Latinos’ self interests of fair minded comprehensive immigration reform.
It’s many more white voters who vote their racial identity aka the GOP instead of their self interests. The perfect example is the way white seniors vote. Upwards of 60% white seniors voted for Romney yet these same white seniors when polled support Medicare and Social Security by almost 80% in some polls. So you have to ask yourself why these white seniors are voting against the party defending Medicare and Social Security. Sure you can say some white seniors are just fooled or are voting based on social conservative issues, but when you poll the importance of issues white seniors still overwhelmingly choose Medicare and Social Security.
Of course the ultimate idiots are people like Bill O’Reilly that say Obama voters are just people that ‘want stuff’. The fact is when you are talking about Medicare and Social Security about 2/3rds of the electorate ‘want stuff’. The only difference in the white population is a big part of that demographic just don’t vote their real wants and needs.
It’s simple correlation that minorities choose Dems based on race, the real cause and effect relationship is minority voters vote much more consistently for their self interests than white voters. So the bottom line is in future with increasing numbers of minority voters it will simply mean that more voters who will be consistently voting for Democrats who are aligned with their self interests.
I just read this last night and thought it was a good summary, but if I read or hear one more person talking about the need for the President to reach across the aisles, I think I will go stark raving bonkers. He has been trying to do just that since he first took office, what the hell is wrong with these people, are they living on another planet or just in collective denial?

Hey Bito, would love to take bows but actually, I was just reflecting the echo of this BS from Fox and the RW.
It’s not a surprise though, the GOP and Romney’s campaign were and are all about denial of any and all reality and reason that conflicts with what they want.
So, Obama winning means he lost. America choosing Obama means they don’t want his policies. It all makes sense if you’re a Republican.
The Republican’s only mandate during President Obama’s first term was to ensure that Obama would be a one-term president, hence the four years of partisan gridlock aimed at blaming the President for the fact that Congress is dysfunctional. Now that President Obama has been elected to a second term, what will the Republican’s next mandate be?
Knowing how ignorant Republicans are they will obstruct to prevent Obama from winning a 3rd term. Sure it’s crazy but I bet at one point this coming four years we’ll hear a right wing conspiracy that Obama wants to end the two term limit for POTUS.

Obama will only be 55 at the end of his last term. I sincerely hope he takes a year or too off and comes back in some capacity. Maybe as SOS (though that could be a constitutional problem) or other part of the cabinet. Maybe even put Obama on the SCOTUS.

jjgravitas, I think there will be yearnings by Repubs to continue blocking everything Obama wants to do but they won’t have the leverage to do so that they did in his first term.
With the “fiscal cliff”, the end of the Bush Tax Cuts, immigration legislation, the budget ceiling, Obama is in charge of the agenda and the Repubs simply won’t have the option to sit on their hands (and brains).
And as big things continue to get done and the economy continues improving, Obama and the Dems will look better and better so when 2014 comes, it may be a good year for Dems to take back The House.

Just checked the latest updates and Obama is up by 2.4% in the popular vote. So your prediction that he will win by 2.5% + looks to be dead on balls accurate. I abdicate the crown even though I picked Romney to win the GOP nod (you picked anyone but Romney) because let’s face it the GOP nomination really meant nothing this year. It was really just a clown car crash in very very slow motion.

Thanks for your kind words. I did predict that this would not be a “razor thin” race or result and could be a landslide for Obama and the Dems (despite the MSM’s insistence), that Obama would win by over 300 EVs and that the trends in the polls would be proven out in the results. And as you say, I did predict that Obama’s margin in the popular vote would be between 2% and 3% but that one was easy, I made that one election night while we were waiting for the rest of the West Coast votes to be counted.
Also on my prediction list, the Kochs and Rove SuperPAC money would not be as effective as they and the MSM had expected, Elizabeth Warren would win and Karl Rove would have a meltdown on election night.
Just in case Nate Silver decides to leave predicting behind for the life of a big money gambler, I’m ready to step into those shoes!
Actually, all I really did was accept arithmetic and logic as true and constants. Obama held leads in 9 out of 10 swing states for many weeks, didn’t take much just to say, “I believe in there being a concrete basis for a scientific and repeatedly tested and validated conclusions and I won’t be swayed by all the illogical hand wringing on the news channels.”
That’s really what Nate represents, a respect and acknowledgement of science and scientific process and principles.
No wonder he was right and Morning Joe/Newt/Rove/Fox News/The Entire GOP were wrong, they don’t understand science.
I was probably more wrong about another aspect I thought would come to fruition this election since the last debate I was sure Obama would win. The money advantage was not on Romney’s side it was more a draw or even advantage Obama because the Obama campaign got to control their media campaign money in a much more precise way than Romney could with his billionaire superPACs. The Romney ads were not great but much better than the superPAC ads and obviously Obama’s ads where the most effective of all.
It’s just anecdotal evidence but one of the superPAC ads for Romney toward the end of the election was so so lame I could not even tell at first that it was an ad in favor of Romney. It was one of those kinder gentler ads that tried to support Romney’s sudden dive to the center but it was so bad it sounded like the woman in the ad was supporting Obama policies.
I want a recount! 😆 😆 I know my prediction is ‘spot on” but somehow AdLib has connections with some counting software! Think about it! Who’s the man behind the curtain here at PlanetPOV? Right it’s Adlib! so we know he knows how right!….

As you and I have discussed many times, we both turned off the media chatter, well as much as we could, over this election cycle. Some things filtered in but for the most part, they were a sham just like you say.
I think Mike Murphy said it right last night even though he only touched on the bare minimum of what is wrong in his party:

You surely cannot count most people in the far right as anything other than sheep and most of the media as wekll. I learned a valuable lesson during this cycle – treat the MSM with a “boulder of salt” as someone here at the planet coined the term. Chalk it up to senior moments that I cannot think right now who said it, probably you.

I think the republicans will continue to lose until they come to the most obvious conclusion. You can’t cling to old ideas in a changing world. It simply doesn’t work. This seems to be something they just can’t understand. No amount of money is going to stop natural change.
The big losers in this election besides the GOPTP fraud machine, is Citizens United and the billionaires who thought that their money could buy this election. The American people won huge yesterday by showing that determination and the will to fight far outweighs the people who think that their money can buy anything. I said here for months that the polls favouring Romney were screwed up, and I was right. The msm loses big too because more and more people will now feel that they can’t be trusted, so all in all it was a momentous victory for the American people last night.
I just checked the overall results from last night and saw that where Romney won big were states of the “old white guy” brigade, and according to many articles I have read in the last week, the Republicans can’t rely on the dwindling “white” voters to help them win in the future, and we all know how difficult the word “change” is for these conservatives, I know because of evidence with the Tories now in power in the U.K. that unless it shows a profit, “change” is a dirty word them.
This article sums up nicely what the GOP are facing after this election, and I think that if they don’t throw out their baggers and extremists, they are finished. Not that I really give a damn.

So true Kalima, the SuperPACs’ power turned out not to be the monster that was feared. People aren’t as dumb as the Kochs and Rove had assumed. And Obama’s using strategy and focusing resources in swing states undercut their advantage, only so many ad spots can run in a day no matter how much money you have.
And I understand that Obama booked airtime early in swing states, getting prime spots and paying less for doing so.
Money lost again, big time in this case. It’s not to say money can’t buy elections, money bought Romney the nomination despite the distaste most Repubs had for him. But when your opponent has a meaningful amount, it’s not as powerful a tool just to have more.
Yes the Obama team started early with their ads and that was a brilliant move, still I know from experience that you can’t buy people who don’t want to be bought, and that was a big mistake by the moneybags crowd. So they bought themselves a Romney doll, and just look where it got them. 😆 I’m so savouring their defeat, feel absolutely wicked and also vindicated for believing in the American people over make-believe news noise.

Hello Kalima, I just got home from the Country Club so I may be interrupting or off on my comment. The majority of Obama and the Union’s early ads, which I agree proved to be brilliant were ads framing Romney as big money liar, thief of pensions and jobs and scoundrel. They drew the picture of him in voters minds before he could. Of course the “Belt-Way” crowd wanted them to stop picking on him and his equity funds and his vulture capitalism. Not only was it a smart move to run them early, it was great that the Unions and his campaign kept using them against some of the big money Dems/Wall Street Dems. They painted the picture of him being crooked early and it stuck especially in the Mid-West, exactly where he won in the swing states. That’s the way I see it.

Yes the Obama team certainly sowed the seeds of both truth and doubt about Romney from an early advantage, just goes to show how cocky the GOP were about their chances with a lying businessman. They are just so out of touch with the changing values of the American voters, and their defeat and thinking that money conquers all clearly illustrates that. They couldn’t have picked a more clueless nominee to lose the election for them if they had tried.
Now this is weird, what I wrote above is what I thought were all my thoughts, it had to be, because I hadn’t watched any political talk shows nor read anything today. Now I hear that my theory was what the Obama campaign followed and it was in the Wall ST. Journal today. Strange…

And if you recall, AdLib, Rove said that one of the Obama campaign’d biggest mistakes was them spending so much money (on ads) so early. Rove has the reputation of being a smart campaign manager and seventy-four percent of that is right–he has a reputation.

I wouldn’t doubt that Rove keeps his spot as the GOP guru because he will spin he work just like he spins everything else. He will fall back on his ‘reputation’ while very few look at his actual results.

Oh so true, AdLib! Like many Planeteers, I couldn’t resist checking out FOX earlier today to see what the spin was going to be. And just as you noted, their version of “appealing to women and minorities” was to package the same old putrid message in a prettier, newer package.
So they fired Romney Popeil (too old, too un-cool, it occurs to them now, after the fact) and they’re thinking that bright, young spokemodels Nikki Haley and Marco Rubio can sell that Florida swampland.

Screw the pudnuts! I find it quite funny (and ironic)that so many GOPers are now saying things like, “we need to work together,” and “bipartisanship is the best way to move forward.”
This doesn’t surprise me, really. I think it’s kinda funny, seeing how badly they got their butt’s kicked yesterday. So much for being devoted to making Obama a one term president!
I sincerely hope that the GOP learned a painful lesson yesterday. Maybe now they’ll move closer to the center and stop giving the radicals (TPers) and religious fundies so much power.
KT – I am still breathless that Obama was re-elected and that it happened with so much energy and strength of vote!
I think this may be less exciting but more important than 2008. In that glorious election the verve had a kind of “rock star” quality to it – everyone on board, everyone ignoring the real man, everyone wanting their 15 seconds of fame, and everyone certain that he was Superman.
THIS time we RE-elected him knowing who he is and approving. This is far more important because it just made voting for a man of color ROUTINE. A part of history. A fact. Nothing out of the ordinary. And that means, finally, that ANYONE can be president in the sense of no ascriptive variables standing in his or her way.
It also was a blow for organization and operation and democracy over money. I realize that given the GOP penchant for “more of the same” that they may think this means doubling UP on the money and DOWN on the lies – but cooler heads may prevail. It is possible that some among the money men AND the strategists might figure out that “doing what you’ve always done will always get what you always got.” This may be the moment the GOP grows up.
Or not.
But we routinely, ordinarily, basically, unspectacularly re-elected this man. And that makes manifest the real “American Exceptionalism”.

I think you nailed it. Obama was re-elected because he is the right man for the job and people trust him. One thing it is hard to change that “old white man” mentality. Some may go to their graves with hate in their hearts.

It was the notion of …”all things done in the dark, soon come to light” movement. People were defiant and determined that they were not going to allow a person, place or thing to stop them from voting and that was the blow back the Republicans didn’t count on.
The positive absolutely overwhelmed all the negative energy and good triumphed over evil.
KT, I don’t see any of that “bipartisanship” blather from Repubs as genuine. Hearing what the hard core RW have been saying, their version of “bipartisanship” is for Obama to finally agree to pass their agenda.
And this is also part of the propaganda war. Two main memes today, Obama has no mandate and in order for bipartisanship to return, it’s up to Obama to give in to Repubs.
Now, Obama knows he won and that the Repubs are in no position to make demands. Boehner today echoed McConnell from yesterday, that they won’t agree to an increase in taxes on the wealthy.
Too bad, all Obama has to do is sit back and the Bush tax cuts expire on Jan 1st. Who’s got the leverage now?
