But to address the issue you wrote about: I think at the very least there has to be a mechanism whereby kids in residential or camp-type programs have much more access to communication with parents and guardians, and there needs to be a minimum level of medical expertise available on short notice. A side issue that does relate: have you heard of the juvenile detention facilities (private, for profit, of course) that have paid off judges to commit kids for extended periods, for minor violations, in order to increase the profit margin? Talk about victimizing kids! (Michael Moore dealt with this problem in “Capitalism” as an example of greed run amok.) Or at least as nearly as I can tell, he has. I’m left wondering what sent him packing. The fact that he was repeatedly asked to defend his ideas, rather than swap insults? Were people actually too nice for his comfort level, if he came here looking for a fight? Did he feel outnumbered (which he certainly was, but what did he expect?)? I’m not saying I miss him. I think there may be a few people who really are capable of raising large families, but, having been friends with a few people who were the eldest in big clans, I can say that the older kids are the ones who really get the worst end of the deal in that scenario. Mini parents from about the age of 8–lotsa work, not much play time.
Although it seems OT, I have to say that the issue of net neutrality figures into the whole picture, too.
If it weren’t for a relatively open forum on the internet, imagine how easy it would be for the Murdochs and Huffington types of the world to shape opinion. If corporations start to control bandwidth for profit, we’re in big trouble.
As it is now, the little guy still has a shot at being heard.
Kinda reminds me of my late mother-in-law, who was the classic New England lady sort and surprised me one day when she said: “The thing about babies is that they surely go in much easier than they come out.”
I got the H1N1 vaccine, but was actually pretty cautious about going near friends/family before I got it. I use masks, gloves, etc., but still worry about being a carrier.
Don’t wanna get that “Typhoid Mary” rep going for me!
