Homie, I know there’s a lot of rhetoric out there about “caliphates,” but I think Pope Francis nailed it more accurately when he said that a great deal of the bloody conflict around the world is rooted in human greed, the love of money and the will to exploit other human beings — not religion or even nationalism. (Although religion and “patriotism” are used as a pretexts to motivate the hapless warriors who get sucked into the endless conflict.)

My hope is that the next administration can go back to being focused on defending American moral values, rather than “protecting American interests” around the globe. Fingers crossed. And I’m willing to take a wait-and-see, patient attitude. Not wishing any more challenges for the next American president than the normal ones that go with the job. Because if the president fails (no matter which party), in a sense the whole country does too.

And we’ve already been there with Dubya. And then some.

Thanks so much for your thoughts, Nirek. I agree. Bernie has every reason to be proud. He ran a clean campaign and he kept his word regarding his initial promise to support the eventual nominee. No one could ask for more.

And this was in the face of DNC duplicity and — I believe — corruption. When all is said and done, he’ll be able to hold his head high. Debbie Wasserman Schultz? Maybe not so much.

Now the mission is to keep The Donald out of the White House. And to continue to hold the Democratic Party accountable for once again returning to its FDR ideals and for advocating for the common man. Not the corporations. And for keeping this country out of war.

No more endless war!

I know I’ve said it before, but all the GOP outrage about the “exceedingly careless” handling of Hillary’s emails is going to ring very hollow now if the party stalwarts don’t denounce what the Donald has done here.

Do they care about national security and cyber-crime? Or not so much?

They can’t have it both ways!

Kalima, I wish I could give this more than one thumbs up.

After horrible, horrible treatment by the DNC, Bernie has shown courage and a sense of unselfish honor. So impressive.

As for Bernie having been expected to give orders to his supporters earlier on to support Hillary? I think Bernie has never viewed his supporters are anything other than intelligent individuals who are very capable of making their own decisions. Last night’s speech was the culmination of weeks of his having managed a very impressive and masterful winding down of a passionate and heartfelt campaign. I think he handled it brilliantly.

Nirek has summed it up well. I feel the same way. On some social media (not on the Planet) Bernie people have been called horrible names and grossly insulted (yes, there’s bad behavior in every political group, but I’m sorry to say I have encountered some of the very worst from the HRC camp). And the DNC has acted so shamefully that the chair has resigned and the DNC has issued a (too late) apology to Sanders and his campaign.

Those things are not easily forgotten, but most Sanders people will do the adult thing regardless — only because they’re mature enough to want what’s better for the country. Better than Trump.

Then the election will be up to Hillary to win or lose.

Michael, I was appalled to see that David Duke brazenly announced today that he was running for the Senate. Even a few years ago, I don’t think this would have been considered a move that would have had the most remote chance of succeeding. Now — thanks to Trump’s tacitly giving the green light to hateful rhetoric — people like Duke feel emboldened. This is not good.

Like you, I hope the electorate sends a message to The Donald in November. “Build a wall around yourself, Mr. Trump.”

Well, it’s not as though Melania would be much different from Clarence Thomas on the Supreme Court when it comes down to it. After all, he simply copied every opinion that his hero Scalia wrote.

The trick will be to make sure that Melania sits next to Ruth Bader Ginsburg so that if she’s going to plagiarize (and we know she will) she can at least plagiarize the right stuff. Having another Notorious RBG on the Court can only be a good thing.

I saw today that someone is speculating that the next Tweet that will come from Melania will be something like: “I realize that people in public life are going to be criticized, but I just want to protect the privacy of my two children, Sasha and Malia.”

I think it was Sylvester Stallone who recently commented on the fact that there’s no civilian use for an assault rifle. He ended up his comment with a question: “Who do you think is going to be breaking into your home? A f**king army?”

Truth be told, I think a certain subset of the people buying these weapons are right wingers who feel that they may have to go up against the government itself one of these days and will need that lethal fire power.

I know next to nothing about weaponry, but I have a sneaking suspicion that even a collection of AR-15s would be no match for tanks, grenade launchers and other military equipment. If the government needs to be reformed, maybe it’s better to go about it the old-fashioned way: vote.

Better yet, run for office.

Indeed, anyone who thinks they need a military weapon designed to kill many people on a battlefield in their possession, automatically disqualifies themselves from being of sound mind to own one.

A sort of positive and functional flip of the old “Catch-22.” (Which was — for younger readers — if you’re sane enough to apply for a mental health discharge from the military in war time, you don’t qualify for one.)

If Superdelegates Weren’t a Fraud, Could they Help the Dems Win the White House?

AdLib, I wish I could give this comment more than one thumbs up. It expresses my sentiments much better than I’ve been able to express them myself.

I agree with Nancy Pelosi that when we look at the big picture, Sanders’ campaign has been an overall positive for the Dem Party. It’s raised important issues and energized younger voters in a really significant way.

Recently the crowd at one CA Sanders event was estimated to be between 50,000 and 60,000 people. Voters don’t turn out in those numbers just to watch a cranky, befuddled old narcissist (which is what some have called him) rant and rave. What he has been saying is truly resonating with millions of people.

Hillary herself has been fairly restrained in her remarks about Bernie (as has he regarding her — he’s never raised the issue of her emails or the Clinton Foundation’s potentially questionable activities), but some of her “people” have been very dismissive and even contemptuous of his supporters.

As you said, those votes are going to be needed in the fall. What’s the point of alienating hundreds of thousands of Sanders’ supporters? It’s entirely possible that a platform that contains many of the Sanders’ campaign’s goals and positions would turn out to be a true “Trump-beater.”

Something watered-down and centrist is going to push many good old FDR-style Dems away from the Party. I’ve already heard a number of life-long Dems say: “I’m not leaving the Party. The Party is leaving me.” If there’s enough of that going on, we might be looking at one of the “yoooooogest” mistakes the American voting population has ever made living in the White House. yelling: “Ya fired!”

HH, I agree on the need to get rid of super delegates. And to reform the whole primary process.

If there’s one silver lining from this whole crazy 2016 primary season, it’s that a lot more American voters have been wised up to the ridiculous complexity and general silliness of both parties’ candidate selection process.

I agree that he’s highly unlikely to be the candidate (something huge would have to happen) and that he also is aware of that, Homie.

But I think he knows better than many suspect the “art of the deal.” You never announce ahead of time what you’ll eventually “settle” for. You aim high. Very high.

And then — when compromise is finally reached — both sides feel they got a decent deal.
