Y’know, I had this fantasy that, since the mission statement of the GOP appears to boil down to “destroy the United States government”, perhaps President Obama could declare the entire GOP to be a terrorist organization, in order to halt their paychecks and seize their bank accounts (flush with millions in campaign donations) in order to put the resulting saved funds toward paying off the government debt. It worked during the War on Drugs, it worked during the War Against Terrorism, perhaps it could help us to fight against the GOP War Against The United States Government. The GOP are complaining about the need to cut government spending. Why don’t they start with themselves and work for free? Pro Bono. Put their money where their mouth is. Use their own money to pay for their limousines and their security details instead on forcing taxpayers to foot the bill, especially since they’ve rolled back taxes so far that we must borrow money to keep them employed. The GOP never changes. It’s humor level now is about that of the Sunday comics. Which is a shame because I used to like them. NBC recently has one of the worst records in network TV programming, having cancelled good shows in order to focus on bad ones. Why? First you have to assume that there are other planets out there exhibiting life (I do). And that some of those planets contain intelligent species (I do). And that some of those species are advanced enough to build spaceships. Once you’ve got that far you must consider the vast resources required not just to build a fleet of spaceships, but to maintain and fuel them during the long stretch of of time and space required for them to reach earth. The resources required for this is so great that it seriously limits your options for what you can afford, for the length of travel and for what you can do along the way. If you are still with me, and the aliens are advanced (read ‘smart’) enough to have reached Earth, and all they want is chlorophyll and protein, scraping up huge forests of it would not be the most cost effective way to go about it. Since plants and animals reproduce, all they would really need are a few examples of whatever they want, and the nutrients required for them to grow and reproduce, like in a hydroponics lab. If we were to employ the concept of full personhood for corporations including punishment for crimes committed by corporations, we should then apply the same rules to other organizations, such as terrorist organizations and religious organizations, which have been responsible for so much suffering in the world. How about holding the corporations that make up the oil industry financially responsible for all the damage that has been and will be caused by global warming (such as the destruction of our coastlines and damage to the fishing industry)? Our problems are being caused by the wealthy and powerful, those who sent our jobs overseas (resulting in millions of poor and unemployed Americans), and who designed bogus regulations that allowed the creation of the housing bubble complete with bogus home loans to the poor which eventually led to a market crash that spanned across nations leading to millions more poor and unemployed. Don’t eat the poor. Eat the wealthy, take their money and use it to pay off the government debt. Hell, President Obama is doing a great job, given what he had to work with when he came into office: two wars, trillions of dollars of federal debt and a Republican party that would rather see the USA dissolve into financial chaos than lift a finger to force the mega-rich to pay their fair share. Everyone knew it would take years to clean up the mess Bush made. But do the Republicans acknowledge it now? N-o-o-o-o-o! Instead, they would rather hound Mr. Obama over every little detail. And this auto-pen thing. What’s that about?
