OK, now on HP I’d have fanned you. No shit. And to be honest with you, I had never thought of that. I’m sure there were people cheering on the Guard that day. Holy Shit, that definitely puts things in perspective. Our generation got more fractured than Humpty Dumpty.

Some times I think this one is headed the same way with a shitload more issues

After my divorce and a couple of stumbling relationships I met a really “nice” gal. My best friend and I were talking after I’d brought her over for his take and he sat me down and told me I had a thing for “little angry women”.

I dismissed that of course, but in reality I’ve always been attracted to women who had some spunk (he preferred women who were more compliant – if that’s the right term).

Hell, I fanned FeistySlug on HP because she said she was feisty.

I got the sense from you already you are no one to be messing with when the lawn is two days overdue for mowing.

I’ll leave the naming of the thread to better minds than mine. Something about “little angry women” comes to mind when I think about some of the female posters here. And I mean that with a great deal of love. Nothing wrong with a little edge of feistiness.

I always joke that I get invited to lots of parties because I hand make “designer” breads. My friends always tell me “no way” but if I leave the bread bag in the car while I carry things in I can detect a trace of fear and disappointment 🙂

As for fans. It was ironic, the less I cared about the number the more I got. One thing about the fan button was I saw pretty fast the extent of the departures that Monday. I was posting and going into pending. Like every time I posted my fan count went down. It was a strange dynamic I’d never seen before

The stories got to be just so much bullshit I often went down to the comments first, look for my favorite folks (most here now) and then come to a conclusion. They were more willing than I to read the post and do the research to disprove it. That’s the first thing I noticed about PPV. The comments were fabulous and often expanded on the original and excellent blogs. That was one of the first things I had to learn to do, read the lead story before commenting. I know that sounds lazy but after a misleading headline, a dubious first or second paragraph and a final part of the story that often completely refuted the previous parts of the story I found the story really was moot. Here, “wow” is all I can say about the quality of the bloggers here. I’m a long way from ever sticking my toe into that pool

I was pretty much done on Sunday night, the comments were being squeezed into the abyss and late that night the whole issue with David Penner being banned was the final nail in the coffin. The announcement and exodus the next morning of some of my favorite posters, two of whom left a forwarding address sent me on my way.

I can contribute but as a relatively unknown poster over there perhaps my words will speak more the average Joe than a super poster, moderator, etc.

I’ll give what I can.

The Dark Times are Here

For anyone here who has not read it I recommend it. He’s gone now and I doubt anyone will be able to pick it up from where he stopped. I read the first edition and stayed with it through each new release. It’s a marvelous story and one so fraught with parallels to our own past, ergo the thirties. I think its influence led to my first chills as I began realizing the tremendous influence places like Fox News were having on a larger and larger segment of the people.

That’s funny Lornejl, I was thinking this was way faster than HP. Then again I only got there two years ago, about the time they started moderating more. The last couple of months I’d post and go to bed. Sometimes even then my comments, those that made it, might not post for almost 24 hours. By then we’d moved on. The thirty second delay here is pretty consistent on Firefox so I don’t mind a bit

I didn’t see the story at all. I worked as an allied health professional for many years, most in a burn unit. I saw things there that defied explanation, from both perspectives incidentally. I was always intrigued with “placbo” healing, where patients got better simply because they thought they were getting a treatment when in fact they weren’t. I can’t even begin to understand the human mind or the power of positive thinking. That said, a severed spinal cord is a severed spinal cord and no amount of faith or prayer is going to regenerate those nerves. I gather from the article the question surrounds whether this was presented as flim flam or not. I suppose I better try to find the show before I make a judgment. In general I think faith healers do pull people in for money instead of faith. That’s just me and my “medical model” training. I think the same can be said of a lot of more traditional medical healers. Surgeons performing surgery for the sake of surgery or to correct the effects of a previous surgery.

I was working with a group of R&D guys once, they were in the filter business where unrestricted air flow was the goal. I wanted to have a filter with restricted air flow. We went round and round and I could tell I wasn’t getting through at all. As I reached the end of my rather long rope one of the engineers suddenly looked me and then his friends and said something very technical and they all smiled and we were fine. But for a while there I couldn’t figure out whether they were ever going get it. Roster? Two Ph D’s, two Masters level and three BS engineering.

My son tried for six months to find a job where he could work and attend school. I remember family members grumbling about him and to be honest I think he went through some depression as the months grew longer. Now he’s working and it’s been wonderful to see the change in energy, the helpfulness and general cheerier attitude. Is it the money? Maybe, he doesn’t have to borrow money or do without even simple things. But he doesn’t make a ton of money and still has to watch. But he started a budget and pitches in at odd times, picking up a pizza. In short I think people do want to work, want to earn, want to contribute. And I welcome he’s being a new and exciting part of people’s lives.

I’m with David and Abby. I had to do some serious readjustment when I got here. Aside from one or two conservative posters at HP I had developed a very cynical view of “them”. Thought they were the enemy in fact. Now I’m seeing a lot of conservatives are no different than me in wanting this country to be great. We have to work together. Sadly the noisiest and most offensive on both sides are the ones that make the news.

I have always told my kids there is a huge difference between smart and intelligent. I think there are a lot of people who have one or the other but not both.

I won’t bother with examples because I should not be the judge and jury.

I love the Holy Shit moment myself. I think like an engineer and an artist and it’s hard sometimes to shut one down so I can problem solve with the other. It’s not easy and I often look rather silly when the revelation comes and I get an eye roll from the person trying to impart the knowledge

Reminds me of the great story about the garden equipment manufacturing plant that was losing items to theft and the management did everything they could to figure it out. Turned out it was an employee who every day took his work clothes and such home in a wheelbarrow. The clothes were fine but the wheelbarrows – he got a new one every day and simply wheeled it home.
