I used to listen to Air America all the time, too, but after awhile I burned out because all it seemed to be was thrashing of the Republicans and FOX pundits. It was fine and fun for awhile, but I grew tired of hearing nothing but complaints, even done in humor, without any solutions or actual discussions. I’ve been staying away from reading progressive sites online in depth for the same reasons as yours. Yesterday though, I did happen to read an article from Raw Story about Keith Olberman and his dispute with O’Reilly, and the article was about O’Reilly reading a Playboy magazine on an airplane with women and children on board, and I just found that to be so silly and childish, and to make it worse, Olberman’s source was one person that was on the flight. I do not care if that story is true or not, but it stooped to a low when it comes to trying to provoke. Remember when we couldn’t eat meat at all on Fridays all year long and not just during Lent? Or we had to fast for at least 3 hours before receiving communion? Or how we were to give up something we loved during Lent? Usually with us kids, we would give up candy, and then Easter Sunday it was time to raid the Easter Baskets after peeling colored hard-boiled eggs and having them with ham and toast for breakfast. I wonder if people still practice those traditions? With everything that you’ve outlined and explained, it leads me to believe that a person must be extremely dedicated to the traditions. I used to listen to Howard Stern years ago when he was on free-radio and he used to tell the funniest stories about his family and the fasting during Passover and then the food. He described with great humor about the crankiness from his family being hungry and how it affected their breath and made them smell bad on the whole. My parents understood poverty and what it meant to lose everything and go hungry, and then quickly on the heels of the Great Depression came WWII and that set off another age of fear as that war affected everyone. If my parents were alive today they would shake their heads at the complaining and yes, whining because we truly have no idea what they went through and did to survive. As long as we had a roof over our heads, food on the table and bed to sleep in, all was good. One person that I hold responsible for crass childish behavior and bullying is Rush Limbaugh. I see ‘kids today’ not only back-talking to their parents, but yelling at them and I mean little kids. There have been numerous postings on youtube and in the news about a pre-teen shoving and yelling at a school bus driver because the bus driver admonished the girl to behave. And then the parents show up just as angry and boorish as their young teen in shouting that the bus driver was picking on their daughter and the school had no right to punish the daughter with detention. How many teachers must face confrontational parents when they call them in to tell them that their child is failing in school or misbehaving? It’s all NOT my fault, NOT my kid’s fault, but it’s your fault! All I know is that when I was small we were taught to respect our elders and teachers and those in authority and I’ll even go as far to say that we feared adults, including our parents. And then came Rush Limbaugh, touted as the voice of regular Americans, and people heard his rantings and outrageous behavior to callers-in that disagreed with him and things have gone downhill since, imho. We need to somehow regain civility in this country and as a society. It does take a village and all of us, especially those in power whether that power is as a parent, teacher, an elected official or an on-air personality in being role models for each other and our children. Heck, even the Catholic Church is playing the blame game in blaming homosexuality and not pedophilia for the scandals rocking the Vatican today. That’s certainly not good leadership. Personal responsibility is a great slogan, but we all need to put that slogan into actions or our society will continue to deteriorate. Is there a solution? I think so but it’s going to take a very long time. You could be correct that the plan is for a comprehensive energy policy with 60 votes in the Senate. Personally, I have no problem with drilling. Economically speaking with the global economy and global corporations, the Religious Right will never succeed in total control, imho. Education in the US is already lacking, and in order to compete globally, children must learn science and math. The corporations may be playing along currently with the RR because they are Republicans and Republicans favor corporations, but once the corporations begin to suffer by the RR “dumbing down” of America, things will change and it might not be that far off in the future. The corporations need American consumers, and a strong middle class, and unless wages start to rise for middle class Americans, corporations will continue to lose money. And the only way for middle class Americans to be able to purchase products, is for the middle class to be educated so that they can get better and higher paying jobs. My parents taught us never to waste anything and I’ve always cringed when at other people’s homes and watching them toss out leftovers from a meal.
