Time Out for O/T – Vol. 17

“Bank of America Corp. (BAC), hit by a credit downgrade last month, has moved derivatives from its Merrill Lynch unit to a subsidiary flush with insured deposits, according to people with direct knowledge of the situation…

Bank of America’s holding company — the parent of both the retail bank and the Merrill Lynch securities unit — held almost $75 trillion of derivatives at the end of June, according to data compiled by the OCC. About $53 trillion, or 71 percent, were within Bank of America NA, according to the data, which represent the notional values of the trades.

That compares with JPMorgan’s deposit-taking entity, JPMorgan Chase Bank NA, which contained 99 percent of the New York-based firm’s $79 trillion of notional derivatives, the OCC data show.”

Regulation 23A (dodd-frank), should put a stop to this, but exemptions have been granted to the banks… BofA does not think it needs regulatory approval, “The bank doesn’t believe regulatory approval is needed, said people with knowledge of its position.”

Is Bank of America preparing for a Chapter 11?
http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/10/19/idUS200361147020111019

-Summary: BofA is transferring derivatives from merrill lynch to their FDIC insured parent company. This amounts to 70+ trillion, apparently the other big banks did this a year and a half ago… so why is BofA doing it now? To shore up their stock, or getting ready to file for chapter 11 and have their losses covered by the tax payer? Also BofA is juggling countrywide as well, which has its own set of problems.

There are quit a bit of theories out there, but I think the best way to tell is if the CEO of BofA and other top brass dumps all their company stock. Then we know BofA hit the fan.

BofA is trying to get capital to comply with new rules. In august they sold 8.5 billion worth of stock in a Chinese infrastructure bank… apparently that was not enough, so a month later they laid off 30,000 workers… apparently that was not enough, so now they are putting their hands on the public purse yet again.

There was also a scandal where BofA sold the bad loans in countrywide to the tax payer backed Fannie and Freddie… it results in a 10 billion loss for the tax payer, and the settlement BofA paid was between 1 and 2 billion….

Unrelated article about GMO food and its affects on mammals… Its old , but had info I was unaware of.

At my local Occupy movement:

20 people showed up, we kept 10 throughout, some have stayed… one lady drove 2 hours to get there (which for me means she was dedicate, she also took the reins for the most part)…

A group of Anarchists (socially democratic) showed up, and 5 minutes later, cops arrived (they waved a black/red flag)… It seemed to spark some fear in one of the protesters that they may be violent when it gets bigger, thus causing mass arrests for the group… not unwarranted as their group was the cause of some ruckus downtown that apparently was aggressive.

Anyway, we had signs, and chants… but “Occupy WallStreet All day all week”, does not sound right with Denver in place of wallstreet…

Im going to stay there overnight tomorrow, after school! … Also, a very nice cop came by and let us know that we can stay as long as we want but we have to stay on the sidewalk.

I am going to have this made into a poster for walkers

according to one of the main protesters, twitter has been blocking #occupywallst from trending…

TP people get all the press…

Cenk had some on his Young Turks program, and KO did a 5-10 minutes on it (mostly on how MSM was not covering it) and then there was also the colbert bit, colbert was the first to cover it.

Anyone following the Occupy Wall Street movement?

http://12160.info/page/live-now-nyc-protest-video-stream-irc-chat-occupywallst-ows

Ive been watching it off and on between classes… it appears that people were protesting over Troy Davis, and they merged with the OWS people and it really did become quite an energetic large crowd.

OR, we could just end the globalization experiment and reinstate tariffs to protect local industry…

I wanna know what Joe just whispered to Boehner…. you could hear the grunts from the republicans on that one.

At least he smirked at the tax-cut on the middle class bit… that was a good jab from PBO.

JOIN THE LIVE BLOG TONIGHT: GOP Debate at Reagan Library

You would also hope his remarks on science would get him in hot water… but they won’t… more likely to hurt Huntsman.

Perry likes to take his time forming sentences, I think most GOPers interpret it as a speech tactic rather than him attempting to fake concern for their issues or maybe he really is just slow.

I feel sorry for him… but still he complains about global warming but wants to demolish the EPA, kind of irrational.

Not to mention it was completely false… Gitmo was set to close until congress had its say…

You would think if their main goal was to remove Obama, they would promote someone likes huntsman… he is reasonable until you get to his EPA comments, which are nucking futs…

I was surprised that they brought that up. There really was no way for her to dodge it, and the answer was transparent. She is an example of a woman that works against her own gender, very similar to her base in that they work against their own self-interest.

I was amused with how Pawlenty was hounded most of the time… and was surprised that Huntsman wanted to end the EPA… I had some hope for him to be a reasonable human being, but hey I should have known better.

Presidential Primary Challenges Miss the Point

Thanks for that reply. I would very much like to avoid a rerun of Bush. I see that congress is the most important to take back, and will direct my energies towards that goal. The republicans sure due plot a tempting trap though.

The reason I brought up AmericansElect was because I saw their CEO(?) on The Colbert Report (last night or two ago) and he said that they take no money from corporations or PACs… I’ll be more cautious with them, and will look into that possible hedge fund support.

» Posted By invient On August 11, 2011 @ 11:31 am

I have been following some of these discussions. Bernie Sanders flat out said exactly what you have said, that by running a candidate against Obama in the primary it may pull out his leftist ideals.

Then you make the best point anyone has made and that is that it is much more important to gain seats in congress than to bicker over the president. He is chained by what bills they can pass, but I remember a point in Obama’s presidency when Democrats controlled both houses and got nothing truly progressive done. Was this due to the bluedogs? I do not know.

In the end, I am torn between running a primary candidate against him and not. I want someone that will look at congress and make them make progressive legislation just by bringing it up, and calling them on their BS. Then again, it would likely be easier to gain the progressive seats in congress to lead to that same legislation. However, I worry that Obama would not sign their legislation.

I would love to hear what you think about AmericansElect.org and what impact they may have on the race.

Info graphics are awesome! Ditto for van jones. I went to a house meeting at boulder and had a few interesting moments. My small group had a phd in medical school, a old lady who had been an activist for 60 years, and a concerned mother of 3. We got off on a tangent about social cohesion and how mandatory public service increased it to a point during and after WWII that the wealthy felt obligated to pay taxes and except lower ratio pay than today. The old lady informed me about how primaries worked and I decided to register as a dem becaue of that conversation. Going to a rally later today concerning citizens united.

Cher, that is the first quote of the day that I have already known. It’s great how many bullets Jefferson gives us against these people that claim reverence to our founding fathers. I fired a few of them off yesterday at my local republican and he quickly changed his arguments to obsessive repetition of the same unsupported assertions but without the founding fathers reference.

Polls should influence policy but until we have all politicians actually care about popular opinion then there is no reason to expect those who align themselves with the top one percent to change their ways.

I agree, but I think he is just applying what he learned from the “negotiations” in last December when the republicans got their tax cuts extended.

The Daily Planet, Vol. 115

Huffington Post’s official policy is to help bloggers and authors get exposure.

Sounds like the Wal-mart case all over again. Our official policy trumps what we actually do.

I was talking with a friend and we thought of taking that court ruling to an extreme by making a parody video. Borrow or make a walmart employee uniform (blue vest) with a smiley face mask on and have that person be stabbed in the back (with the obligatory X’s for eyes afterward)… then modify the mask by adding hair or something… and then kill that “person” over again… then have text on the screen “Wal-Mart official policy: We do not murder our employees”, supreme court ruling text flashes with obligatory kangaroos in the background, and then “Policy and truth are not aligning”

Lastly, that Thom Hartman video was great! Never new the supreme court did not have judicial review power.

For me it really is not whether he wins or loses money, it is just the fact that he has any bets against US treasuries.

A comment on the Salon article states that many people do not know they are invested in these funds because it is part of a mutual fund (or something like that) and therefore Cantor may have not known about it. Now that he likely does know, he should sell it, but has not so far.

» Posted By invient On July 12, 2011 @ 7:41 am

The WSJ article on wealthy fearing public violence is amusing because of their reaction. I could see the logic in it if it was an attack by one or two people, but if social unrest gets to the point where a mass of people rise against them, then how will your team of unarmed guards deal with that scenario. I do not care how many armed or unarmed guards, military weapons,or whatever other “defense” mechanisms they have if there is solidarity there will be vengeance Bastille style.

Anyway, Randy Rhodes on radio program mentioned that Eric Cantor is shorting US treasuries (http://www.salon.com/news/politics/war_room/2011/06/27/eric_cantor_conflict_of_interest/index.html) … I do not know how unethical this is as he stands to lose hundreds of thousands of dollars if the US tanks in his other investments.

The Daily Planet, Vol. 113

Troubling news with Boehner pulling out, Cantor appears to be singing the same tune he always has and coming out looking like a tool, just like the NYT op-ed said he would.

I hope Elizabeth Warren is trying to set herself up for a presidential run in 2016. She would be better off going for a house seat and then going for a foreign policy spot on the next administration. Or if she could go for both foreign policy and a governorship in Vermont or New Hampshire as the governorship is two years in those states.

You know who would be the best “President of the Senate” with Mrs. Warren, Debbie Wasserman-Shultz.
I know she is unelectable for President, but maybe she has a shot as VP.

Time Out for O/T – Vol. 16

I read nakedcapitalism.com a blog by a series of economists (mostly one though) and they linked to this article http://www.foreignpolicy.com/articles/2011/08/09/three_cheers_for_decline

In a way the article is right. In others it is also wrong. It is likely now that we are providing more jobs for foreign governments citizens than we are for our own… that should outrage us (I made a hyperbole :P). The social divide is widening but we do not need to go into full retraction and become what they prescribe, if we do, we leave the world to what? There is no other country that can do what we can, we have just been doing it the wrong way (as Khirad points out). You can think the military-industrial complex for that… so it is with some irony I move to my next paragraph.

There was a recent report done by the pentagon (http://onpoint.wbur.org/2011/04/26/pentagon-security)… it basically states if you want a stable country you need a stable economic system where investment in the people is the most important factor… We need to do it here before we do it there, our countries goal is to make a stable world (to allow a world economy), we cannot fulfill that with the widening wealth gap and the increasing despair of the middle class. Most of the wealthy do not see a purpose in having a stable world, they want a chaotic one, after all chaos allows for swindling, and that is what they are good at. The key is this next election, gaining a progressive majority in the house will be a game changer and will start the US and soon the world into a real recovery. I believe that the US is a virtuous nation, that we do care for all humanity and want to bring prosperity to it through expansion of our ideals (democratic governments)… WE let our country be run by corporatists, installing dictators to gain complete control of resources and repress the local populations… we must have a free world, we must have humanity maximize its own human capital, and we must progress as a race rather than fall into another dark age that seems to always be just over the horizon.

Sorry for being off topic, but that article got me fired up. Why the hell is it in the optimist section of that website… wtf!

I would also like to recommend Vanguard… That show is just always interesting…

And if you want topdocumentaryfilms.com often has many documentaries for “free”… watch out there are some very quackery ones on that site!

I like Moore for the most part, there are parts of his docs that are just too emotionally driven. Capitalism a Love Story showed the picture, but made it gimmicky.
