Displaying 181 To 210 Of 2,270 Comments Huffington Post Finalizes Its Divorce From Its Bloggers Penny, welcome to the planet. It’s tough to leave HP behind because of the sheer volume of well-organized information at your fingertips. However the content of the material and the quality of the comment environment has made it dead to me. » Posted By funksands On June 12, 2014 @ 9:15 pm Water-balloon right to the face π » Posted By funksands On June 12, 2014 @ 9:13 pm S, I sure hope so too. I couldn’t agree more with your comments. The sheer mass of items that I could comment on at HP was one of the features that drew me there in the first place. And truth be told, I love a good argument and I knew I could always find one at HP if I looked hard enough. Those “good arguments” began to become fewer and far between as time went on. That said, I’ve seemed to scratch that itch more and more with Twitter. I haven’t posted on HP since the original Facebook-ization of the site. As far as the Planet goes, I don’t need it to be an aggregation site, but any website like this does need a “critical mass” of posters and commentators to generate energy, discussion, dissent and fun. I don’t know what that number is, but its going to be exciting to find out. Funk “Glad to See You” Sands » Posted By funksands On June 4, 2014 @ 9:09 am Handyman its good to see you here. Great stuff! » Posted By funksands On May 14, 2014 @ 11:37 am Five Reasons Why Democrats Could Do Well in the 2014 Elections Murph, I love your list. What machinery is in place currently to do some of things you mentioned in the back part of your post? Does it even exist? Or does it need to be created? If so, I’m not optimistic. » Posted By funksands On April 16, 2014 @ 9:50 am Ad, this is a perfect time to post this. The Republicans could very well have control of both chambers come January 2015, but their position is a weak one at best. 1. Nationalize the election – 100% spot on. There are SO many ideas that the Dems could be forcefully running on to drive excitement and therefore turnout for the midterms, but let me ask you; have they done it? Maybe I’m just too busy lately to notice, but it doesn’t seem like a cohesive message has been trotted out for candidates to use. That said, I think the GOP’s biggest weakness is here. There isn’t the same level of rage that there was in 2010 or 2012. Obamacare’s seeming functionality takes away one of their biggest foils. Already the GOP is pivoting to the message that the Dems are raiding Medicare to pay for a working program. There simply isn’t enough fire beneath F&F, Benghazi, and the IRS to stimulate turn-out. There may be a bit of dip on their end as well. 2. I hope so, but so far I just don’t see it. People that make under 30K a year simply don’t vote. If they haven’t been fed-up by now, when will that happen? Having the Dems pound away at that national message might get them more excited to turn out, but seemingly being fed up has simply led to dropping out of the political process altogether. 3. Good point and I think the dark horse in the midterms. How motivated will people be to stand in line for 2 hours for a mid-term election? We’ll see, but it certainly could surprise a lot of representatives that thought their seat was safe. 4. Women completely swung the recent Virginia elections. If they hadn’t abandoned the GOP in such numbers, the GOP would still control all levels of the statehouse. 5. I’m not sure this is going to be an issue. As I mentioned above, I think the GOP is deliberately pivoting away from the most extreme of their “messages”. But the downside to this is that their base is less excited and slightly less likely to show up. I wrote a while back that Organizing for America (the leftover pieces of Obama’s reelection machine re-made) was a wild card in all of this. I really like a lot of the things they are doing, but it doesn’t seem that that machinery is really coordinating with the Democratic party very well. I could be wrong, but this seems like a wasted opportunity. The mid-term malaise still seems to have a grip on the Democratic party. They seem a bit tired, a bit gun-shy, already thinking about the huge push in 2016 when the GOP has to defend a ton of Senate seats and run against the likely Hillary nomination. Ultimately I think that the Senate will stay in Democratic hands by one seat, and they’ll likely pick up a couple of more House seats, but Congress will stay utterly paralyzed for another two years. But it could be a lot better. » Posted By funksands On April 16, 2014 @ 9:49 am PonyJohn, sorry I didn’t see your comment earlier. You’re right, it does sound like that, but it isn’t. Deficits do matter, just not in the way most people think. Your second sentence proves my point. We don’t need the rest of the world to buy US debt to finance our spending. They buy our debt because they demand its safety and liquidity, not because we go to them cup in hand. The UK, (another country that is supposedly broke) is the third-largest foreign buyer of treasury securities on earth. They do that for their own reasons and not because we’re broke. I encourage you to read the first few installments of this series to get a little clearer picture of what MMT is. Thanks for responding. » Posted By funksands On June 12, 2014 @ 9:55 am Ad, thanks so much for the compliment. Most of Congress and of course the Federal Reserve and Treasury know how the fiat currency of the country works and that we can never ever default on our debt (unless we choose to). Many in Congress have no clue however and fall into the same false narrative the rest of do about federal debt and deficits. There ARE dangers of too-large national debt. Neither going bankrupt nor running out of money are. Much of your time there is obviously still very vivid in your mind. My father failed his physical (they mis-measured hime as too tall) and didn’t go, and I personally know only 1 or 2 other people who served in Vietnam, and they don’t talk about it much. Couple of questions: 1) How have your recollections changed over time? Are there things that happened while you were there that you think about differently now than maybe you did 20 years ago? 2) What was it like for you when you came home? You very briefly touched on the “public” when you returned home, but is there anything else you care to mention? I can’t even imagine what this must have been like for infantry that served there, but I really appreciate you giving your take and perspective. » Posted By funksands On March 31, 2014 @ 2:39 pm Chris Christie Cleared on Bridgegate by Wife » Posted By funksands On March 27, 2014 @ 8:35 pm Republicans Use Time Machine to Go Back and Blame FDR for Pearl Harbor Pink, its from the Dave Chapelle Show circa 2005. (wait for it) π » Posted By funksands On March 4, 2014 @ 4:58 pm Sally, even you give the Snowbilly the benefit of the doubt, that would bring her total score to: 1 Something to celebrate indeed. » Posted By funksands On March 4, 2014 @ 12:02 pm » Posted By funksands On March 4, 2014 @ 8:18 am Choice, our press coverage of the President’s handling of this situation makes me ill, but what’s new. Your last paragraph, while very accurately capturing the situation will not fill 24 hrs of a cable news cycle. » Posted By funksands On March 4, 2014 @ 8:07 am Kes, no doubt. Putin has shown exactly what kind of world leader he views himself to be. He’s also made it pretty clear how he views Russia’s place in it. His actions are those of someone who is very comfortable using military action, ultra-nationalism, economic blackmail and stifling oppression in varying doses to get what he wants. » Posted By funksands On March 4, 2014 @ 8:01 am On the other extreme, this odd little gem that popped up in the Nation the other day. Hmmm. Not sure what to think about this. http://www.thenation.com/article/178344/distorting-russia# » Posted By funksands On March 3, 2014 @ 11:16 pm Seriously Ad, the atmosphere reminds me a lot of the atmosphere regarding the USSR post Cuba-pre Gorbachev. It’s hard to tell whether its the US attitudes driving the press or the other way around. » Posted By funksands On March 3, 2014 @ 10:56 pm Headline from alternate universe: “President McCain pauses during wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, North Korea, Pakistan, Iran and New Zealand to contemplate action against Russia while world holds its breath” » Posted By funksands On March 3, 2014 @ 8:52 pm Am I the only one that is starting to get a little uncomfortable with the casual and lazy constant demonization of Putin’s motives? Not to say he doesn’t deserve a lot of the criticism that is leveled at him, but our press doesn’t need to make him into a bigger cartoon that he already makes himself. » Posted By funksands On March 3, 2014 @ 8:50 pmComments Posted By funksands
