Think of it as “even a blind pig can find an acorn once in a while.” This was interesting, and Cher would NOT have posted it if it were drivel. I read conservative mags (Business Week, etc.) because you often get amazing insights from their honesty – that they think people such as I do not read. Some of my best research on corporate shenanigans comes from those sources.

Your critique of IgnoProgs – those who know nothing but who have LOTS to say – is spot on, and most all of us share the disdain. But we trust Cher’s judgment.

Look at it this way – you say “I might agree (I’ll never know)…” She does the work to give us the parts that are useful to us, and then we don’t have to cull the gunk. She’s done it for us. The mere posting of something from TO is not evidence of LOW standards or sell-out but wise and thoughtful selection for our edification.

2012 New Hampshire Primary Thread

I just cannot trust her, Sally. She’s an admirer of Doug Coe, leader of “The Family”, the ultra right wing Christians on C Street. She has made him her personal pastor – and he’s not even ordained! She has huge corporate ties, and she worked too cozily with some of the WORST of the GOP Senators – Coburn for one. She once was someone I deeply admired – but I’ve lost a lot of respect for her. And I don’t bloody trust her at all.

Cher – he won my heart when, after Obama won, he and his wife were on Oprah. He said of course HE wanted to win, but in terms of history and significance, “We got it right.” His affirmation of the importance of Obama’s victory historically, of a Black president, was glowing in his eyes and smile. THAT is something I will never forget. He meant every word.

He’s a loose lip, that’s for sure, but he’s also the POOREST Senator we have, even after all his years in the Senate which means he did not find ways to enrich himself, and there are many good things about him. I will also love him for whispering to Obama just as health care reform passed, “This is a big fucking deal!” I find I’m always laughing WITH him, never AT him. I just plain like him.

Or secretly grateful TO Obama for pulling him from utter obscurity? He’d be nowhere at all – not that he’s anywhere much – without having been made Ambassador to China.

I suspect he actually admires Obama but cannot bring himself to switch parties or even say so.

But they were not last time either. The GOP “enthusiasm gap” seems quite large, and no explanations about incumbents etc. will make it clear. There are just fewer GOP voters voting. That does not bode well for their candidates – ANY of them.

Naw – Biden is a truly nice guy. He always gives the benefit of the doubt. But he ROCKS at the policy things he does. I definitely do NOT want Hillary. I don’t trust her at ALL. Biden was born foot-in-mouth, but he is the LEAST wealthy US Senator and has a great heart and good mind. Just that loose lip thingy…

I thought it was the BEST pro-Obama speech I’ve heard in years!!!

Welcome back, Cher – hope you’re rested and ready for the New Year? We surely did miss you! This is an excellent compilation of LOTS of news, all of it helpful. I’ve not yet gone through it all, whew!

Did wish to ask one question of the Austrian School – how’d that Tulip Craze and South Sea Bubble work out for ya? Government was no way involved in either, and… The missing element is the suffering and harm done to people who, at the micro level, were not the cause of but suffered horrendous consequences from, free markets excess. Why is state corporatism horrible but private corporatism wonderful? Who looks out for those who put one foot in front of the other and sustain the day-to-day economy but who can be crushed by the few who ruin it at the top? Only way – ONLY way – to make this fair is to turn all production over to those who produce. You don’t have a skill – you don’t have a say. Finance wheeler dealers – OUT of production, OUT of businesses that make real things, OUT of agriculture. Only those who produce get a say. Oh – you can play the market, but it’s with the proviso that it’s YOYO time – you’re on your own. Then you have a truly “libertarian” economy base.

But this view of yours is infested with the problem that you don’t think ordinary people are smart enough to run their own lives, Mr. Libertarian. So your elitism skews your entire argument. I ask you again – how’d that South Sea Bubble work for ya? You have a choice – participatory economics, government mediation for all people, or Social Darwinism with HUGE social control. If you opt for the latter – I will definitely not opt for YOU.

LIVE BLOG – GOP Debate in NH – Sunday – 6:00 am PST

I second that – nothing, and I mean NOTHING, could have enticed me to watch this when I did not watch the first.

I get more out of AdLib’s recaps than I would have done watching though this afternoon I did see some in rerun – b-o-r-i-n-g.

But yes, Romney folded like a cheap suit upon being called out on his BS. It was a pleasure to see THAT anyway.

They all seem to think God picked them to be president. I think God knows we need a laugh.

LIVE BLOG: GOP Debate Tonight in NH – 6:00 pm PST

OK – I totally forgot this was even on. Did not watch. Instead we watched (are watching, more or less on my part) a wonderful professor of history talking about women supporters of the Confederacy in the 1860s and it came to me in a blinding flash!!!!

The ENTIRE roster of GOP candidates are all qualified to be President-

Of the Confederacy.

That solves THAT problem. They’re just in the wrong contest.

Coalition of Church and State: Ron Paul

Sue – bloody brilliant as always!

I do believe Paul wants NO government so that corporations can create fiefdoms with private armies to march into nations with resources they want and take them. His property-based libertarianism means he has no MORAL opposition to war but does not want government to decide when to kill people and when not. Only self interested gain should dictate that. Human rights have no place in such a world – government should not intervene to protect people from this adventurism, foreign OR domestic. Capitalism will always do what is best for its own interests, and therefore we can have the Nation of IBM, of Chevron, of Koch Brothers – so long as they pick up their own tab, they may be the new Manors with their own serfs (employees, community residents) and private armies (so dust off that armor in the parlor corner…)

It does rather amaze me that he’s THAT good on contracts between partners in same-sex couples. He is rabidly homophobic and called gay men “queers” on a video. Maybe he thinks (too many people do) that they will all fall into a kind of Social Darwinism pit, get AIDS and die off. I don’t know.

But thinking of this new Capitalist Feudalism, the obvious cooperative plan would seem to me to have a new Crusades. I think he’s NOT for a new Inquisition – yet – but what about his followers? They may. He’s rabidly anti-abortion calling on STATES to outlaw it, so he may be pushing forward with a quasi-inquisitional mode, at least on some issues.

I find him the scariest of the lot since we really know the least about him, and you have taught us all new things about where he’s coming from. The more I learn the worse the feelings about him – I think he’s power mad and so extremist that yes, he’d honestly be worse than Bush.

When young people talk about achieving global peace, they sometimes don’t think about the means behind that. We think it’s always about agreements and respect – but global peace is equally achievable through massive repression of opposition. With the unleashing of mercenaries, the elimination of human rights, the unfettering of powerful corporations – we COULD have global peace indeed. At the total expense of our humanity and freedom. Ron Paul may hate government and thus repudiate “1984”, but it’s not beyond the pale to see he’d be FINE with all that’s in that book – if the source of Big Brother lay in corporate surveillance and mind control. Scary is too small a word for that vision. Thanks for letting us peek under the veneer of Ron Paul. The more I see, the less I like.

What amazes me is that apparently Iowa has gotten an additional 30,000 GOP registrations recently. I hope this means they have their own fifth column, and that not all of them are “real” Republicans! What in the world does anyone in Iowa get from these people except RELIGIOUS zealotry?

Any of them wins the White House – I’m outta here. I do not welcome another McCarthyism. Peter King is bad enough – this will make it a full court press.

There may be a special place in hell for “chickenhawks” as the late Chicago columnist, Mike Royko named them. I knew a LOT of those guys – got some deferment but hated the anti-war protesters, sneered at Conscientious Objectors, and pumped the war as a good thing – just not for them. One told me that he was “too good” to be cannon fodder. His exact words to me – that came on the heels of the death of a medical student, a Captain, who died in action. I have real problems seeing how the Captain “deserved” to die but my acquaintance did not. Vile and despicable – they are the Cheneys who had “other priorities” as if everyone who served and died or was maimed did not?

Only Perry was in the military during Viet Nam, and he never was in harm’s way as a pilot of the “garbage collectors”, the planes that shuttled supplies. Nothing wrong with that – but don’t pretend you’re a war hero either. And do NOT send other young men and women into the path of a danger you never faced.

Despicable people.

Sue – thank you for showing both the hypocrisy of this man AND his rightward, well, not drift but full-tilt sprint, to appease religious conservatives.

NPR had an interesting discussion yesterday on Dominionism and its goals to command the “Seven Mountains” of society. Mitt is falling in line even though his faith, Church of the Latter Day Saints, is officially OUT of the Dominionist camp. In, out, up, down – what difference if everyone agrees on the core “principles” of world domination? Mitt signed the compact to investigate any and all people and institutions that support marriage equality. Well, that would be me and mine.

Vancouver’s lovely this time of year I understand…

I don’t care if he once was more open minded (one might equate it to a wind tunnel) if today he is hard core rightwing. All that matters is where he is now. And he’s about at the same spot as Bachmann, Perry, and Santorum. So I’m not fooled by his vacillations – he is always where he needs to be to win. And this time he’s tied his fortunes to the most extremist religious conservatism possible. And that makes him deadly dangerous.

Free to Assemble- Not in Indiana; A GOP Tactic at Work

Artist- Any decent judges left in Indiana who will honor the Constitution and NOT the GOP opposition to, well, people?

Y’know – I’d think this is someplace the Baggers should join forces with anyone else. They crowded into the CA capitol and might even find reason to do it in Indiana. They’d be prohibited, too – if the powers that would be did not turn a blind eye, of course.

Why are so many Americans willing to give up their freedoms? The pissing and moaning is all about “property” (which is not guaranteed or protected save for the 4th, 5th, and some 14th amendment protections IF you have property) but nothing about civil liberties. And yet the Right fears the Black Helicopters from the feds all the while the goblins in the states are the ones picking off their rights.

There are a lot of rights over and above the Second Amendment which is NOT even under threat. Wow – some people sure do fool easily.

KQ – while I’d not argue with you at ALL on the enormity of this, I believe your entry is disqualified on the grounds that it is the one and perhaps only F*&# up that is not US domestic in origin. Otherwise, of course, you’d be the clear winner. If we were competing…or something.
