I used to teach a course on global capitalism to union people who knew the impact if not the reasons for America’s decline. It was easier then (15 years and more) before we had to account for China, but I do think certain things still apply. Yes, the US needs to become stable, but that in itself runs counter to the need to spend to jump start our economy. But we won’t survive – no nation will survive – if we don’t take a hint from what has survived every economic downturn. The greater degree of relative autonomy a village, town, state, nation has from utter reliance on others, the better it weathers the storm. One has only to look at the middle of the nation – NE, OK, KS – to see that those who never boomed, also did not bust. In one of the wonderful ironies of history, people are leaving CA to head to OK. Stability counts. We often lose sight of that, but that in fact is why those of us who’ve been in community banking and credit union advocacy saw participants survive when all about us were crashing and burning. Now – do NOT get me started on Ms. H claiming she made this idea up over Christmas dinner! She just jumped on the bandwagon twenty-plus years too late. Glad if it motivates people, but in Sacramento the largest and most stable financial entity is a credit union because during late state budgets when salaries are frozen (and that means every year) said credit union provides NO INTEREST loans to its members who are mostly state employees. Who’d be fool to bank at B of A when you could be at Golden1 with the latter’s stability? Ms. H. is right – pull money OUT of banks and back into community banks (NOT S&Ls – they are still not without problems) and credit unions, and suddenly these suckers are NOT “too big to fail”. They will shrink, and they should. This ought to be an Obama talking point about trusting your local community bank AND credit union (be sure it’s insured) on the Main Street level. BTW – I believe you can refinance your home mortgage by transferring over to your credit union. If high interest ARMs got you, that’s the way to move. Community banks are too few and certainly not present everywhere, but credit unions abound. If they are at some geographic remove, It’s still worth a few dollars of fees to extract your money from an ATM that’s not linked – the overall safety and responsiveness is worth it. The US, China, and every other nation MUST go back to rebuilding a fairly independent economy. Even die-hard market lovers ought to remember that Adam Smith did not envison what we have today. “Free trade” was supposed to be about SURPLUS and trading that which you produce that is extraordinary, not giving up your basic production. Obama needs to lean on a “renew the US economy” movement. The free traders can go jump – they’re not helping us at all. We should be happy that the cash for clunkers paid for Toyotas – they’re MADE here with US labor. We have to care less about ownership (though local control is a key issue) than about our neighbors who get jobs. I dislike absentee ownership, but the primacy needs to be on who WORKS and PRODUCES things here intially. China must do the same. Their factory capacity needs to be directed now to their domestic needs or the inequalities they are breeding will bring them down. We can do all this. But it does take shedding Reaganomics, free market worship, and caring about the ordinary person and believing that stability is more important than riches. Yes SueinCA – it IS a federal crime because it was designed to interfere with the right of women to access the services of abortion. It is covered by the federal FACE act of 1994. I knew both men, Bart and George Tiller. I made it a point to understand what they did, what their feelings were. Tiller did do late term abortions – on fetuses that could not live outside the womb and the death of which would harm or kill the mother. While I was interviewing him, a couple came in, older, not kids, and she was clearly about 8 months along. The look on their faces was horrible – these were people who had celebrated the pregnancy and had just learned there’d be no baby. It had no brain. All those months of waiting, hoping, being excited – dashed beyond all repair. If a fetus dies in utero, it can kill the mother, it can ruin her ability to have another child, it can cause lifelong complications. Tiller was there to help these parents who so much WANTED this child, come to terms with the fact that it would never be. Tiller had a Methodist minister on standby to baptize the fetuses afterwards if the parents so desired. He told me how terribly misformed these poor creatures were. He was there to offer comfort when and where he could. And so because a handful of idiots made up lies that these were healthy infants just wantonly killed for no reason, Scott Roeder went to Tiller’s church and blew him away. Manslaughter? MANSLAUGHTER????? This was cold blooded murder and arrogance beyond measure. I do NOT believe in the death penalty – Kopp has life without parole – but I am more than happy to have this disgusting egotist, this wanton criminal, slapped behind bars forever. John Boehner whined the House bill was 1990 pages (Yeah? So?) and now whines this is 12 pages. Well, fine, but it is not a bill. It’s a list of points for Republican consideration. I feel fairly sure the mandates are present, but if there is a public option – PLEASE – then that helps. Unlike previous bills, the payments for insurance are linked as percentages of your income on a graduated scale up to 400% of the Federal Poverty Level. Medicare is a mandate based on a percentage of your income. Payments linked to percentages and NOT flat rates are vastly more humane and tolerable. The problem with mandated purchases of private insurance is that the feds have to pony up the rest. Hence, the proposal for federal oversight and control of rates. Good stewardship. You’d THINK the Republicans would respect the weeding out of “waste” but nooooo – because for the “waste” is support for people one step from peril, NOT the control of corporate greed. And so, tomorrow, don’t be looking for real answers on the bill. That is still behind closed doors so the tea bag people cannot claim (as Stupak is already doing) that the bill sacrifices babies in the town square. It’s obvious he has gone to the Dark Side of Grover Norquist government-is-the-enemy philosophy. He has wanted, and probably will do again, to cut all – ALL – social safety net programs and lard up the budget with debt so we have no choice but to throw people under the train. My organization recommended a NO vote on all of them because they might have extended the tiny tax increase for another year, but they would have compounded the structural problems into infinity. THIS year, God willing and the creek don’t rise, there will be moves to go back to democracy. A majority vote on budget and taxes, period. No supermajorities – even Federalist Paper 58 railed against this over 200 years ago. It gives the minority double power, and that is the death of democracy. CA is the only state that has supermajority on both budget AND taxes (only Arkansas and Rhode Island do on budget – CA has sooooo much in common with them) but will change civil rights issues in the Constitution with a simple majority. CA may or may not move ahead with real reform since the hold outs are those – even progressives and liberals with money – who think, “just so I got mine”. It’s the bane of our existence that CA is riddled with people for whom the only valuable part of society is themselves. The fear of taxes is an obsession. CA ranks about 18th in tax rates but is in the tope three for costs and is number 1 with people in dependence. Try to get a corporation to do the right thing and hire people – and the Chamber of Commerce hollers “job killer” as if that made a whit of sense. I lived in CA during my 20s and 30s and left owing not one thin dime to anyone despite a BA and two MA degrees. I worked my way through grad school living decently on a teaching assistant’s income and paid all fees out of pocket. There is NO reason we cannot do the same now. We do lack the will, and the Governor’s “commitment” to higher ed probably begins and ends with this speech. He’s deeply hostile to our education system just as he is to anything he does not understand. I will believe it when I see it. This election – voters need to vote indeed. There is a LOT riding on it. If the reform proposals hit the ballot, they need turn out. These are the things that really might restore us to sanity. What mystifies me is the amount of last year’s federal stimulus that never got spent. Who’s hoarding and why? CA has billions left, and even though we supposedly have an overseer, she is so in the Guv’s pocket we never hear a critique. But it should pop and soon, and while it is mostly blue-collar while the Sacto layoffs are white collar, it should help a lot of the state if not the capitol. Because I routinely pissed off the RW, I used to get pat downs fairly regularly. Never been strip searched, thank GOD. My biggest query about these scanners, which, as I understand, are at some remove from the viewer so he/she can’t tell who’s who and since the figure now will have more of a neutral view with no details, my biggest query is HOW DAMNED RADIOACTIVE ARE THEY????? It’s not the privacy, it’s the risk. Abby – I work very closely with several Muslim groups and thus Muslim people. They do follow sharia law – and it’s GREAT stuff (prohibiting interest wherever possible, honoring peace and banning war against civilians, etc.) so that “giving” them sharia law is irrelevant in America. They have it and use it, and it works fine. They came here to be protected by western laws and freedoms, and the places where sharia law exists are in areas that do not conflict. What needs to happen is for us to honor their sovereignty. At least since the Crusades, western imperialism has pillaged their resources, imposed Christianity (that Islam reveres but does not want to practice, thanks), made them second class or even third class citizens. Getting our military and corporate hands off of them would be a major first step. Respecting them and their values another. Are there things I dislike? Yup. But they are NOT Islam, they are nationalistic. Female circumcision is national and NOT part of Islam. Supression of women’s rights in general is also NOT part of Islam but of certain cultures. Most of the women with whom I work are amazing – well educated, thoughtful, LEADERS, heads of organizations, spokespeople for organizations, etc. I have never encountered a single moment of disrespect for me, my beliefs, my knowledge, my status and I am friends with the head of the Southern CA Shura Council who respects me as I do him. Two of my closest friends are Muslim women upon whom I rely for not just political support but for trading funny stories about most everything related to our lives. They don’t EVER cuss, but other than that, we’re the same in most respects. I love them dearly. So we don’t have to make America different to embrace Islam. They are not, as far as I can tell, true “end times” Christians who believe Christ will come again any day now, if only the world is rid of, well, people on the Planet and our ilk.Those folks are merely tolerated since the Family members don’t really believe a lot of that. The Family is Christian in name only – the “Jesus plus nothing” mantra is really like a branding (meaning with a hot iron) to force compliance and subservience. Beyond that, they are dedicated to a world run by their own kind, UNDER their own direction. They were founded in direct opposition to labor organizing. They created a mythic Biblical story that the original disciples were “businessmen” as if that made any sense. However, it justifies a total hierarchy of the wealthy, IF business leaders are willing to bow to the Family’s dominance. Over the years, the Family has attracted some of the nation’s largest corporate players. This in turn allows them to support some of the world’s worst tyrants, just so long as said tyrants defer to the Family’s supremacy. So yes, in the long and short run, the view of The Family is a world of men (women are subservient, too) who claim Christ but don’t need to bother with the teachings or directions of Christ, and who are wealthy, powerful, and willing to defer to the Family leadership. The rest of us are to be supressed in all ways. We are to follow, period. They have no problem with anyone who’s had a homosexual relationship. They have a HUGE problem with anyone who asserts GLBT people are equal in the eyes of God and have civil rights. That, not the acts, is the unforgiveable sin. They have no problem with bloodletting in the name of US corporate imperialism, just so the final victory comes to them in natural riches, dominance of the colonial power by them, and so they can spread their control everywhere. Enslaved people? No problem. They will send missionaries to bring them to Jesus. Other than expanding their own power, they really have no apparent agenda. But, then, if you ultimately control everything – no democracy or free press, no labor unions or uppity women, no liberation movements or pressure for equality from the poor, well, what else could you want? People such as Pat Robertson, the late Jerry Falwell, Paul and Rob Schenck, are lower-tier folks who help the oppressed soothe this inequality with quickie salvation. So – the rich get richer and more powerful, and the poor get salvation. Period. I think these people are truly, truly dangerous. And while the End Times people are real nut cases with their own consequences to the world, these people are massively worse because they have real power already. I fear for our President because I think they can and may have eradicated opponents who stand for real people and not for them.
