Thomas Jefferson would be in cardiac arrest right now, he and other Founders having envisioned the press as being the unofficial fourth branch of government. It was thought by them to be a safety net, if all the other branches failed the people, the press would ultimately protect them. I keep remembering those initial polls done right after the Iraq invasion in 2003. While most Americans believed Saddam Hussein really had “weapons of mass distruction” pointed right at us (thanks, Judy Miller), the rest of the world was aghast at what our country was doing. I remember American favorability plummeting from France to Japan to Brazil, and everywhere inbetween, precisely because their media actually bothered to report what was actually happening in Iraq while ours kept obsessing over how “macho” George W. Bush looked in his fighter pilot costume. It’s not like our media have changed their ways since then. I’m just amazed that at least a large chunk of Americans seemed to have wizened up since 2003.
