Friday night Vox lit a fire in me and I made a decision. After talking to everyone here and seeing the madness that was taking place in front of the Captital with the spitting and hate and BS,…I filled up the RAV4 and hit the road. At the moment I’m standing in front of the Holiday Inn (free WiFi) about 4 blocks from the crowds in DC. There is a gathering of Hispanics and Latinos all around the Mall with some of the best smelling food I’ve ever smelled. Lots of tents and stalls out in front of the Smithsonian castle where I came in on the metro. There are assholes everywhere and I’m doing my best not to slap the shit out of some of these protesters. I’m going to go out in a minute and try to find supporters of the bill and hang with them. It was probably stupid of me to drive here, but I felt compelled to be a part of this. I will try to find WiFi spots as I go and check in every so often. I admit I know nothing, but am trying to unlearn 3 decades of western philosophy to better grasp the material and beliefs. I am, at this point in my life, trying to find a touchstone of peace and serenity that is lost in our culture here. It seems so many walk the path to this spirituality and become a little more ‘human’ for doing so. It seems the Indian culture has a deeper understanding of love for one another that reaches far past the superficial, conservative and puritan values of American society. Their embrace of real relationships and great intimacy is soul enriching and so needed today. I will continue my journey with a new appreciation for the Indian culture. We do have some of the best living anywhere and more opportunities than most. It’s not so much WHERE we are in the world’s rankings..to me, it’s where we’re headed. More importantly, what we’re teaching our future generations. Is it ethical to have our children see us all scrambling for the almighty dollar at the expense of everything else? That we serve as perfect examples of how NOT to evolve capitalism with greed, hubris and corruption as entirely acceptable business practice is what concerns me. I didn’t just fall off the turnip truck, either. I realize these practices have been employed since this nation established itself. However, there is a more public and transparent acceptance in it today that really stokes my fire. In decades past, these sleazy deals and corrupt dealings all took place behind closed doors and out of the sunshine. And when these deals were exposed to the public through competent reporting and journalistic hound-dogging, the officials were summarily rounded up, exposed, shamed and dismissed. Today they are almost publicly proud of HOW they were able to screw the other guy! and sadly, too often the ‘other guy’ is us, the middle class. But I feel America is a divided country and to suggest a revolution is proper and maybe even justified, but I fear it would turn into tea-bagger vs tree-hugger bloodbath that wouldn’t change anything. Too comfortable? I think so, yes. We are all so busy and concerned with keeping our own lives from ruin that we just slink away and hope someone else picks up the cause…
Yet, a caveat. I’m not optimistic we Libs have it in us to be true, effective activists like the Right. They have great unifiers like, fear, hate, intolerance and a rock solid religious faith that drives their collective sense of superiority. Libs on the other hand simply have logic, facts, reason and a desire to evolve our society for the sake of humanity’s common good. That’s a tough hand to play…and win. The Right will blindly unite to elect whomever the talking heads tell them to elect. Period. We Libs will debate, discuss and contemplate the candidate that bests suits our own personal beliefs, etc…this logic will scatter our votes and muddy our collective voice. I can only hope I’m wrong.
Also, by reducing our rhetoric and activism down to the tea bag level…doesn’t that in itself just bring us down to…~gulp~…their level of extremism? Like I said above, not all Progs or Libs will look upon such activist efforts kindly.
But as a boat rocker for life, I’m ready for the pitchforks and torches…Don’t Tread on Me, motherf%$%s…..!
