A Thanksgiving Tradition

I am Thankful for the Obama’s in the White House.
Very Thankful for Music, Dog shows on Animal Planet and soft klenex.
I am Thankful for Kids that can take over the meal prep
when the cold/cough has taken over me.
They are doing a great job!

Well if you have never done it before and that bird is wet and slippery…and cold!
I tried to channel my inner grandmother no luck there.
I did not know any method except to pluck so silly me, I learned the hard way.

What got me was my grandmother did it all herself, killed the bird, stripped the bird and cooked the bird. She was Swedish and a wonderful cook and baker, she worked in a bakery and that is how they keep food in the house during the great depression.

Hito and Javez,
That turkey gave me a backache that lasted weeks!

I am the youngest daughter of the youngest daughter of a youngest daughter. My mother often told me about how her mom would go out to the chicken coop you would hear some ruckus and snap went the neck
Aaahhh !!
We are so removed from all that process.

This year I asked the turkey dude at the Trader Joe’s
About that feathered bird I had bought from them last year.
He said- O yeah, some of them come like that, if you have feathers just put in in the oven on high for
30 minutes and they will all stick out.
Aaaahhh
No thank you – This year we are back to regular old organic.

Kosher is less processed, prepared in a cleaner environment, blessed by a Rabbi and higher grade of meat- Says my Jewish Husband. I have generally found it to be great for chicken and beef but last year that turkey was not in a see thru package so imagine my surprise when I opened it up and saw all of the feathers.
It did turnout to be a great turkey but late, very late.

Our dogs go nuts all day long, if I were to turn my back I am sure they would devise a way to open the oven and drag off that turkey !

Has anyone ever made Kosher Turkey ??
That was a big surprise for me last year.
Feathers and bits of feathers, all over the bird.
Uhggg……
I spent nearly two hours pulling them out with both pliers and tweezers.
Dinner was late.

Do not go gentle into that good night (well, on second thought…)

Hi Escribacat,

I saw this on 60 minutes also. Heavy topic, but so important that
people talk about it in a thoughtful and caring manner, as you have done so here.

I have gone through four parents passing on, mine and my husbands.

My Parents wanted hospice and had planned it out years ahead of time.
So there was no ‘guess work’ by any one in the family.
They had it there in black and white, what a relief for everyone.
Their experience was peaceful, unpainful, respectful, comfortable and dignified.

My Husbands Parents left the decisions up to him.
His Mom had diabetes and a heart condition.
His Dad, Parkinson’s.
After seeing what they had to go thru,
I can not imagine anyone not having that, end of life care,
discussion with their doctor.
You could call what they are doing, medical torture,
but once you start down that road how do you stop?
If it is a son or daughter making the choices, imagine the guilt,
the conflict and the burden.
How far do you go?
Are they in pain?
They can’t tell you anything.
They can not give you any guidance even thought they have done that your whole life.
Now their voice is silent.
A machine makes them take in air.

I wonder if you could take a vote and asked-
When you go…..
Would you like to pass away with dignity, peace, no pain and surrounded by your loved ones?
or
Would you like to be hooked up to machines?
Tubes for feeding and liquids?
have a catheter inserted here and there?
Restrained in your bed?
Lying in waste?
Unable to communicate?
In pain?
Confused?
Afraid?
Bed Sores?
Strangers around?

I wonder how many would choose the later?

I read this earlier today and knew I needed a little time to respond.
You are very brave to put this together.
