GOP Politics – Winning at Any Cost

A fine think piece. You put a lot together here, Ad Lib. Linking the Palin debacle to the current crowed of unsuitables to the willingness in the American heart to put winning ahead of everything is quite an undertaking. You did it.

Two interesting side notes for you both anecdotal:

1) Oh yes, the GOP knew they were doing a terrible thing in nominating Sarah. And despite my current admiration for Mr. Schmidt, I still hold him responsible for the near disaster. Once he knew how bad she was he should have pushed McCain to drop her and failing that, resigned. But he did not.

A GOP operative I know well says that it was a “joke” in the McCain campaign that he would be the first president who would start his term with his cabinet having signed a 25th Amendment statement. That statement, signed by a majority of the cabinet (fifty percent plus one) would declare that the President is incapacitated and unable to discharge the powers and duties of HER office. That’s right, if Palin were to assume the office in any way for any amount of time, the Cabinet would transmit to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives their written declaration that Palin could not function in the office. The “joke” went on to say that the grounds (although none are really required) would be her emotional instability. Congress would be prepared for this and would assemble immediate and vote its concurrence at which time the Speaker of the House would assume the Office of President and Ms. Palin would be pushed to resign or face impeachment.

It’s funny, my friend did not smile once when he was telling me this joke.

2) That $2 Trillion that is sitting off to the side…..Here is a story from the WSJ (http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052970203370604577265543176919450.html)…It backs up your statement about where the jobs are coming from- small business. I know a hi-tech startup owner whose business is doing great (123 employees in less than one year; will double by September)….but in order to launch it he had to beg and borrow from dozens of sources. A friend who was a high powered assured him that he had everything necessary to get the loan he wanted but that the bank just wasn’t making many loans because……His banker friend made him a personal loan. I wonder how low the unemployment level would be if Big Business was as dedicated to making jobs as Small Business.

My date with the GOP

I will be taking party in the GOP Caucuses here in Missouri tomorrow morning at 10 AM. I am going to be a known Democrat leaning guest. I may not be there for long it depends on how they organize themselves in my county.

Once voters gather at a caucus location, they will decide as a group how delegates will be selected, whether delegates will run individually or as a slate of candidates, whether the vote will use a secret ballot or be conducted publicly and other details. Though potential delegates won’t be forced to formally declare a preference for a presidential candidate, it is expected that many will in order to win support.

Other options: Allowing speeches, extended debate, small groups, large common meeting or multiple votes.

I will let you know how it goes.

Great report. I suggest the Washington State Republicans may have more of the old style GOP, which I supported for many years, about them than most of the party. Or maybe you were sitting at a table for reasonable people which is why there were only three of you.

Coughlin is a relic. 1930’s. McCarthy was covered but did not have a media home. He is in the 50’s. Murrow took him on.

Arbitron has changed over from paper diaries to wireless recorders that literally pick what is playing and for how long. The numbers are 1/3 to 1/2 of what he says. The demo studies have revealed that his is not a very attractive audience. Being suspicious by nature I wonder if a number of the advertisers are taking this “principled” stand because they wanted out and also get to score points with a significant purchasing group at the same time.

KQ, Inside Radio is reporting that Rush’s numbers are wildly inflated and that new market studies show that his audience profile is not a “buying crowd”. Largely male, while and 55 plus. Bottom line is that his listeners might not be good for their bottom line and others….think WOMEN are buyers and are not happy with him.

I think the rational, reasonable left and right will be ok. I like Smerconish on the Right for example. He pushes but does not rant or rave. What more could I ask for. Respectful and respectable public discourse!

Thanks. I am having a hard time with the boulder rolling down hill- faster and faster, bigger and bigger. Still it is very important to do so because it encourages all of us to keep at it. I am trying to make two or three advertiser/sponsor contacts a day. My primary target now is Clear Channel itself. My aim is to get them to set up a standards and practices board based on the ethics statements of the Society of American Journalists. So far I have not been able to talk to anyone real, but I will continue being a gadfly.

I used to love WLS talk radio in Chicago. They had a variety of hosts spread across the day….none were too far to the left or right but were skilled in carrying on many conversations at once. They are all long gone.

McCain on Fox Sunday could only say he regretted Schmidt having said what he did about Palin who McCain said was a wonderful, competent and ethical personal…they will not admit error which means they will not learn….sadly too few of the voting public pay attention. A vote for the GOP is a vote against one’s own interests for most of our citizenry- why is the race even close?

Creeps, it seems, have been good business for a long time. As I look at this I wonder about the underlying business decisions involved. It would seem that the audiences have indeed been overestimated and reported. New electronic monitoring is creating a very different picture. And who are the listeners? The key demographic high purchasing groups are under-represented in the models. I also wonder if the big corporations are sensing a significant shift in the winds and are wondering about their association with the right. Just thinking. Businesses rarely act out of a sense of moral righteousness, but because of the bottom line. I wonder.

Don’t think he’s an outlier. The chairs of these county parties really represent the voters.

The Tea Party mindset here is very powerful and there is a sense that the “establishment” GOP is trying to steal the GOP party back from the far right that fought so hard to get control of it.

AND, being a Mormon he is very much an outsider- this is solid evangelical baptist grassroots and preachers here are clear- Mormons are not Christians.

Funk….I spoke with a GOP chairman a couple days ago and he said that he would rather see Romeny lose than win since a Romney win would destroy the newly emerging, ultra conservative, socially traditional GOP. AND HE IS A MORMON…anathema!

A little spin.

Tonight earlier I was getting e mails urging the Missouri Caucus Delegates to move to Gingrich base on his GA win….now they have flipped back to Santorum.

There is a sense that Mo. can/should drag Romney down….anyone but Romney seems to include the mantra of better to lose than for Romney to win….very bitter and heartfelt here.
