Baghdad, Blowback and Bush

Not to let W off the hook, but our fractured dealings with Iraq are as convoluted as our dealings with Iran. We put the Ba’athists in charge in 1963 when Qassim started demanding a bigger share of oil royalties for Iraq, and Saddam had ties to the CIA in the 1950’s. And there’s more than a little to suggest this is not home-grown rebellion.

We got to wear the crown of world’s undisputed Big Dawg from the fall of the Berlin Wall until now.But our expiration date has passed. It isn’t going to get better as the world economy unwinds. Boots on the ground in Iraq (which is what it would take to ‘rescue’ our ‘victory’) would be the last blow Obama’s backers could take. The anti-war left might actually wake up. And if such a move ratchets up gas prices (and how could it not), people will take to the streets.

seriously? We ‘Muricans don’t do hind-sight. Could we all have a call-in the next time some bloviator spouts off about Iran’s hatred of the US and point out to said individual the history going back to Mossadegh?

And as for Iraq, we built the Ba’athist party and used Saddam (a CIA asset) in the late 1950’s to try and depose Qasim, a leader who had the gall to ask for a bigger share of the oil money out of Iraq.

The Republican attack on history that I particularly despise was the Amity Schlaes book THE FORGOTTEN MAN, which played serious disinfo games with the jobless figures of the Depression to call FDR’s new deal a mistake. Schlaes keeps getting jobs and face-time (on MSNBC awhile ago) to argue policy.
We are always at war with Eastasia.

Huffington Post Finalizes Its Divorce From Its Bloggers

Going to miss HP–I liked the badges and there were lots of people who were worth posting with. But I can’t countenance HP sharing money off our efforts with Mr. Facebook, someone who has gamed the tax system to keep from paying in any of his billions. Facebook already has too much of my time. And I didn’t want trolliez having a way to find out my real identity and messing with me in a social forum.

BTW, I might have actually posted something like ‘Many valid points’, but I think I followed it up with something a bit more vitriolic.

Monica, thanks for posting a Tim Wise video. It’s unfortunate (as Wise himself acknowledges) that he is saying what people of color have known forever, and he’s listened to because he is a white man. Wise used to be regularly featured on WBAI here in NY.

Big fan of Chris Hedges. What’s interesting to me is that people from other parts of the political spectrum have come to similar conclusions. Paul Craig Roberts, an economist and former Reagan treasury guy, rode off the reservation during the W years over off-shoring and empire building. He gave testimony that the off-shoring of middle-class jobs would leave us as a third-world country in a decade or so–and people with Walmart salaries can’t pay the taxes needed to keep the Sixth fleet on alert 24/7.

The issue isn’t that American empire will collapse–it’s what happens if there’s no one to take up the slack. A US financial rout takes down the world’s finances as well. And China won’t have customers for its exports, so their economy will crap out as well.

I know I depressed the hell out of everyone with the Human Extinction story. Guy McPherson and others with environmental cred are still postulating that humans can’t survive on a planet that’s 3.5 C above baseline, which is the temperature we’re heading into as early as 2030.

The reason I’m posting is that I do a radio show out of Brooklyn on Friday nights. It’s called Sex and Politics and we webcast at http://mywbcr.com starting at 8 PM. I’ll be interviewing Fox News’ favorite climate change denialist starting around 8:45. It should be interesting.
