The Death of the Great Movie

The Umbrellas of Cherbourg is classic Deneuve. “8 femmes” has a similar feel, too, with her as a matriarch. I’d add “Belle du jour”, as well.

I like German films in general.

First one is a classic I never got to. Second, I find Spanish movies can be dark (which is a good thing). Love, passion, beauty, death… and flamenco!

Love that song! Like seriously. Plus, Naomi Watts was so cute in that. Not a high brow comment untangling the complexities of Lynch, but just an observation. He’s very good with erotic themes.

Two musicals I have yet to see: Sweeny Todd and Repo Man. A different type of musical though!

OMG, I totally forgot David Lynch. Lost Highway not only a good film, but a fantastic soundtrack!

Devil’s Advocate was indeed cool.

“I do like some movies that are mindless fun however, like desserts, on occasion. A diet of all desserts can make one addicted to and crave only sweet, empty calories.”

Phew. I’m kinda snobbish about my film choices. And, quite frankly, have a list somewhere of my faves, but it’s such a daunting task and overwhelming. But, I must say, I got drawn into some of the most saccharine movies ever made, but which when done right, are good fun, and in fact need to be judged on their own merits. I speak of the passion which is Bollywood. I, a non-Indian, sometimes shock Indians with my knowledge. Unofficial estimate has got to be putting me around 300+ since I started watching in early 2000’s broadening my love of all films foreign. Of course, I, taking private group classes in Hindi at the time, could trudge through really bad, simple movies just paying attention to dialogue (it beats some of those language CDs!). It is my guilty pleasure.

My regular fare is more along the lines of Mira Nair and Deepa Mehta, speaking of Indian films, or speaking of Twilight and vampires, the Swedish “Let the Right One In” is a far superior alternative (I especially get uppity and absolutely indignant about gothy things being appropriated by the mainstream), although I’m more forgiving when Tim Burton puts out a stinker.

My favorite old movie would have to be “The Cabinet of Doctor Caligari” – I love the German Expressionist style. I like things strange. I’m more into the artsy and abstract, the ‘Kubrickness’, than “real” cinema or high drama. I’m also a sucker for elaborate costume (

Tonight’s Recipe

Not really great on fancy cooking or anything. This may not be kosher but I consolidated two recipes found online. Start with this:

In addition, add turmeric and cardamom – feel it out to taste is best I can tell you. Fesenjan can also be made with your choice of meat, or no meat (I would suggest substituting with a paneer or European type equivalent, or if vegan, you could try firm tofu?). Serve alone or with saffron rice or white rice (topped off with sumac if you got it), etc. This and many other Persian soups and stews are perfect for winter. Made this for a group of friends and all were complimenting it and asking what was in it. And don’t forget the tea!

Obama Won’t Sign On To Anti-Landmine Treaty

I’d like to take an informal poll.

When you voted for Obama, did you think he’d be as radical as Sarah Palin said he was, or did you listen to him and his stump speeches, read up on his history and conclude he’d rule pragmatically, left of center? If so, why is this so shocking to progressives?

No, it’s not ideal; yes, I’ve been disappointed, but golly, what did you expect? I mean, honestly? I hate to say it, but it appears as if some people on the left really did believe he’d be some sort of messiah with dictatorial powers.

As a young person, who was only really politically conscious of the Bush I and Clinton years, I voted Nader my first election. After Bush II — sorry, but, there IS a real difference! Sorry he doesn’t rule with purity on every decision I’d like, but by god, what on earth good has boycotting an election ever gotten you? At least cast a third party protest vote. And if you believe Kucinich is ever getting the Democratic nomination…

“Collecting our toys and going home”

LOL! Exactly!

You’re great at cutting straight to the heart of it with common sense wisdom.

A Thanksgiving Tradition

I’m thankful for friends, family, health, food and a roof over my head – and yeah, this place which is like an oasis, a place of respite after a days toll of slaying those trolls!

Happy Thanksgiving.

I like the way you think. Children as designated drivers! LOL

BRING ME A BUCKET..

What’s weird to me is our most loathed one, who seems to almost have changed personalities after she was away for a while. Maybe it’s just me, but the whole Ron Paul thing seems new.

» Posted By Khirad On November 25, 2009 @ 10:02 pm

I forget. I want to say yes, but I can’t recall.

» Posted By Khirad On November 25, 2009 @ 9:57 pm

Yes, but why no new sock that I’m aware of?

» Posted By Khirad On November 25, 2009 @ 9:43 pm

Yes, that was what the expressed stated purpose was for, escribecat. I’m on both threads right now. She does seem to know software, she’s trying to help people get around the YouTube block. BTW daily motion links work! mwahahaha! Maybe she’s like a good mod? I dunno. Don’t much like talking behind her back, either. I feel bad for those people too – I was once one of them! (though back then I hit and run so thankfully never saw all the abuse invariably assailing me).

» Posted By Khirad On November 25, 2009 @ 9:42 pm

That’s what I was wondering. Said she got an email of a mod who wanted to get in touch with the other regular users about their thoughts on an OT thread for us.

BTW, your planet post hasn’t been raptured yet.

» Posted By Khirad On November 25, 2009 @ 9:17 pm

You know, a mod (via LadyNaga) was floating the idea of setting up OT freethreads over there yesterday, and now they’re killing music nights? Honestly…

» Posted By Khirad On November 25, 2009 @ 9:05 pm

I always knew something was ‘off’ with that one.

» Posted By Khirad On November 25, 2009 @ 9:04 pm

Beat me to it. 😉

» Posted By Khirad On November 25, 2009 @ 7:32 pm

I know, don’t they get that we only get really nasty in return to the original?

I still hang around for the people who aren’t banned (yet) and some troll slaying, as well.

» Posted By Khirad On November 25, 2009 @ 7:31 pm

Did any of you see the Brown/Guardian meltdown, btw?

» Posted By Khirad On November 25, 2009 @ 7:27 pm

Honestly? Good lord. Well, the only good that may come of it is more presence here.

Thanksgiving

Well, Florence would give it the penal.

BTW, any of you see the prospective Goddard v. Brewer poll?

» Posted By Khirad On November 25, 2009 @ 7:25 pm

Oh, Lord. I’ve been in them parts. Wouldn’t happen to be represented by a nutjob repub, would you? LOL In AZ, the chances are good.

» Posted By Khirad On November 25, 2009 @ 6:55 pm

That’s right! If it ain’t the Hawks or the Cards, I don’t care who wins, unless it affects those two. Must admit I was one of those “instant” Cards fans the year before, though.

Go Suns! I was just by the stadium Sunday. That’s only weird because I’m only an hour away, but I don’t really make it up there much. Handful times a year at most.

» Posted By Khirad On November 25, 2009 @ 6:53 pm

Poor thing, Lions fan. But, I don’t care about the Packers so why not root for the (eternal) underdog?

And yeah it is early still, but you’re better at delineating your time than I am. This becomes an addictive habit and really cuts into my readin’ time.

Night!
