President Hung in Effigy

Obviously we need not fear speech, but rather action. Certainly one must take hate speech seriously, but in many cases the best response is to scoff at the asshole making the speech.

I think we have a perfect example in Plains. Point at her. Laugh at her. Laugh at her fellow residents. Shame the haters.

Whatever.

» Posted By KevenSeven On January 4, 2010 @ 8:23 pm

Oh, it is certainly loathsome. I have said that repeatedly: the racists have the right to expose themselves as assholes, and we have a right to call them out for being assholes.

Ad Lib makes a pretty good point on the question: is this a threat?

He says that it depends on intent.

The difficulty is that we don’t arrest people or imprison them for what they intend to do. Unless they conspire to commit a crime, of course.

Who can know what was in this old bat’s mind? I certainly would not care to speculate.

Give me the choice: squash “threats” to the president, or maintain free speech,; I’ll take the free speech.

Even if it means tolerating racist assholes hanging the president in effigy. The president is just one man. Freedom of speech is more important than one man.

How the hell did I mock YOU?

You may be the center of your universe, but I was not thinking of you individually.

I was thinking of everybody who lit their hair on fire over this nonsense. You were just one of many,

» Posted By KevenSeven On January 4, 2010 @ 8:07 pm

Me? I think I was saying that we should not fear speech, even hateful speech.

» Posted By KevenSeven On January 4, 2010 @ 8:02 pm

I’m not backing off of anything.

» Posted By KevenSeven On January 4, 2010 @ 7:51 pm

Kihrad.

Me laughing at the fact that she is a 73 year old woman is not the same as saying that there is no way that a 73 year old woman COULD be a threat.

But rather that I am amused that so many people have their knickers in a twist over some old racist biddy.

She is a completable old fuck. The hell with her.

» Posted By KevenSeven On January 4, 2010 @ 7:50 pm

Then you seem to have missed the point of the thread:

My opinion that this was not a threat, but rather protected speech. So we don’t agree on that one. Wow. We are having a debate.

Quark has said expressly that this was indeed a threat.

» Posted By KevenSeven On January 4, 2010 @ 7:45 pm

So fucking kill me.

» Posted By KevenSeven On January 4, 2010 @ 7:23 pm

Oh, and I never said that a 73 year old woman “could not be a threat”.

I defy you to find me writing that.

» Posted By KevenSeven On January 4, 2010 @ 7:20 pm

Congress. It is a crime to threaten the president.

You continue to insist that this was a threat to the president I continue to insist that the evidence does not prove that.

I do not know that this was a threat to the president. Yet you write that the fact that the SS investigates by default means that it was a threat. Which is nonsense.

» Posted By KevenSeven On January 4, 2010 @ 7:18 pm

I have no clue what that means.

» Posted By KevenSeven On January 4, 2010 @ 7:08 pm

OK, you just jumped the shark.

The fact that the SS investigates something does not make it a threat.

A crime is a crime. The cops showing up does not make it a crime. It is or is not a crime regardless of the cops.

The SS interviewed me once due to a posting I left at Huff.

So, according to your incredibly weak logic, I made a threat to the president. Strangely enough. The SS did not do more that speak to me about this crime that you say I must have committed, because, after all, the SS did come to my house.

Are you going on record saying that if a cop interviews someone, that person is a criminal?

Are you really going to peddle that?

» Posted By KevenSeven On January 4, 2010 @ 7:07 pm

Actually, anime kiddie porn is illegal as well.

Hey. Don’t hate me for understanding the laws I don’t write.

» Posted By KevenSeven On January 4, 2010 @ 7:03 pm

Well, I am saying that this is free speech and protected by the first amendment. I do not see it as a threat against the president.

Had their been a sign that expressly threatened the president, well, then that sign would be a threat.

Presidents get hung in effigy. It happens. Now, as to whether it is a big deal really does depend on one’s perspective. Me? I know America is rotten with racist assholes. I am not easily shocked.

» Posted By KevenSeven On January 4, 2010 @ 6:37 pm

No kidding????

Big threat!

» Posted By KevenSeven On January 4, 2010 @ 6:32 pm

Oh, yeah, using the Govt e-mail is enough to get him in hot water..

I don’t know what diff it makes if I say he should be or that he will be. I think my tone against the little fuck is sufficiently condeming.

I don’t say that the president is “just” a symbol. Where do you see that?

I am saying that I do not see a prosecutable threat. I’m pretty sure that I am right there.

Again. This asshole has the right to expose himself to be an asshole. And we have a right to tell him that he is an asshole.

I’m OK with that.

» Posted By KevenSeven On January 4, 2010 @ 5:33 pm

That is basis, not bases. And I don’t agree that the constitution can be trumped by “LEGAL” LAWS.

Most people call those “statutory” law, btw.

The reason that kiddie porn is illegal is that it presumes that a child is being violated. That is the crime that makes it illegal and not protected speech.

I say again: if you can burn a flag (and you should be able to) then you can hang a president in effigy.

That is not to say that to hang a president in effigy does not make you an asshole. Certainly this person is an asshole. And we all have the freedom of speech to call him out on his hatred.

But I defend his right to be an asshole.

» Posted By KevenSeven On January 4, 2010 @ 5:28 pm

There is plenty of it to go around.

» Posted By KevenSeven On January 4, 2010 @ 10:50 am

I expect the SS will handle this with their customary professionalism and efficiency.

This cracker will never take a step without the SS knowing about it, while Obama is in the WH.

» Posted By KevenSeven On January 4, 2010 @ 10:50 am

I like the graphic, but it is rather off point. I don’t see why the DOT worker should be fired for it. The first amendment protects dick heads and good liberals like me equally. Plus DOT is civil service. Bon chance firing one of those guys!

You say you disagree with my assessment, then you go and agree with my assessment. Implicit threats are not actionable, I think you will find. And I did say that this clown is going to be on a watch list, and that is regardless of you thinking that he should be. He simply will be.

US & UK Yemen Embassies Close

How do you mean. “work”?

I am sure that the two caucuses can come up with a bill this way. Probably not including the PO, mind you, or even better, extended Medicare.

What you want to ask yourself is: will it be politically disadvantageous?

Probably not as disadvantageous as having the process strung out any further.

Thoughts?

I think we need a drinking session!

Some swag would be OK, I suppose. I doubt that it would be massively profitable, but I don’t know that that is much of an issue.

As for theme of the swag, and for that matter, the Planet, I still want us to avoid being the Anti Huffington Post. I want people to judge this site to be of value regardless of Huff, so I would personally vote against any references to Huff. Just sayin’.

Let’s stand on our own.

As for giving money to charity:

You gotta have money

We got 200+ members, who are about as cohesive as a herd of cats, (actually, ours is not too wide a range of politics) and I have difficulty imagining the membership being able to amicably choose a list of charities to benefit.

Besides, I don’t know that we are going to ever really make any money. I could be wrong about that. I’d be glad to be wrong about that.

I for one am in difficulty imagining how we could market the Planet without spending money. I will tell you, the cost of advertising my business has just about bankrupted me.

But I think a better year is before us, and that we are going to do pretty well in the polls come November, so I’m feeling good.
