No Matter what Democrats Think the Presidential Race is a Toss Up Because of the Big Lies

PPP which is no right wing poll has Romney up one point in WI. Nate still has it leaning Obama but now there are two polls with Romney leading.

I agree with the tiny national bump Romney got from Ryan in fact my whole post I avoided even talking about the impact of Ryan because I think it’s the lying ads not him helping in some places like FL where Nate flipped and gives Romney a 56% chance of winning it now.

It seems like the seniors in the Midwest get it but I’m not so sure of FL seniors in their Faux News bubbles.

I wish I could find it again but I read an account from a senior about what Ryan and Romney are doing with Medicare that I hope more seniors think like him. He said sure Medicare will be fine for us but what about my children and grandchildren. It’s a great program and I want them to have it too.

Believe me I know the electoral college hurdle Romney is facing even though I really think he has FL in the bag for the wrong reasons. Fortunately I don’t see Romney moving much in OH, your state, and he can’t win without it. Romney needs to run the table on FL and OH to win. He also needs to grab one or two other states like CO, VA or WI. The problems is I can see a real path for Romney winning VA, WI and FL. The good part is Obama really deserves to win OH because he saved the auto industry. Otherwise OH would have much worse unemployment numbers.

I agree with one thing the people passionate about Obama are more passionate because they are passionate FOR him and AGAINST Romney while the other side is predominantly just AGAINST Obama. But unlike 2008 I think the total number of passionate voters favors the GOP.

Romney did get one significant thing from Ryan. Now WI is a toss up. Remember this is a state where Scott Walker was reelected. In fact Ryan is the only candidate on either ticket that has net favorables in WI.

Oh I bet you are getting deluged by them. We just have a taste of them in GA.

CO is one of those places I worry about liberal dissatisfaction the most. They are not your typical reliable east and west coast liberals but more independent and even liberals. Not all of course but just generally speaking.

I know a few people from CO and they are still complaining about things like Obama not closing Gitmo when it was actually congress’ doing.

I really don’t look at that many individual polls anymore and look at trends. The only analyst I believe is Nate Silver. Obama’s odds of winning are down 5% by his calculations in a week and there is no reason for it other than the barrage of lying Romney ads which he suggests may be working too. We are simply in uncharted territory with an incumbent being this far behind in the money race so anything can happen and this election is too important for chance. The GOP pollsters are not that dumb. They would not be running the 5th ad lying about Obama on welfare if they weren’t having some affect with those white working class voters.

I know Romney is not a smart man but again it’s always about expectations in debates. If Obama does not obliterate him their will be a narrative with pundits that Obama lost his edge or something like that.

I do agree it’s very important for Obama and the Dems to offer a positive vision for the nation. Unfortunately Obama cannot use the unity argument now so he has to use the future argument.

We need to understand what we are up against. Wouldn’t it be worse if Democrats lost because we we’re so complacent. There are two sides to this election and only one has the passion now, add a clueless middle and it spells trouble.

If Romney does win we are in for the fight of our lives. Not only will he try to undo everything Obama did but LBJ and FDR as well.

Women and the GOP Men That Hate Them

It’s depressing to hear Kes but that’s for your insight. I can’t get my head around why so many women vote for the GOP woman haters club. Their is only one group that should even consider giving the GOP their vote, rich white men because they are the only people all their policies are geared towards advancing.

Excellent post per usual. But the thing that still worries me is that this race is still close when women make up 53% of the electorate. Sure Obama has a slightly higher than 10% lead among women but it should be 15% or more. Most undecideds are women and if they don’t get it this time around I still think Romney and Ryan could steal this election.

I know exactly what you mean seeing a little sanity from the other side once in a while does give me a bit more hope too.

When are people going to realize that so called ‘growth’ is not going to be 3% a year anymore so it’s time to stop worrying about that number and for business to hire more people. I firmly believe the right wing who owns the majority of businesses have done everything they could to keep employment down on the orders of the GOP.

Excellent work setting the record straight and comparing what the Republicans are doing now with their lies about their Medicare intentions to the Tobacco industry could not be more appropriate.

I’ll just add a couple more facts about the RMONEY/RYAND budget. All in they will end the ACA, privatize Medicare and cut Medicaid almost in half. These cuts will total almost $2 trillion. That will leave about 75 million without insurance including about 6 million seniors where Medicaid fills in the gaps to cover things like nursing home care. So in the richest country on earth about 25% of it’s population will not have medical coverage and over a third will have no coverage or inadequate coverage. Of course like you said this will result in even faster increases in costs for those who have coverage because having so many people without coverage will lead to providers having to make up the money they lose on the uninsured with higher premiums and costs for the insured.

About 40,000 people died each year before Obamacare because they lacked medical coverage. It’s not hyperbole to say that number could double, triple or even quadruple if Romney and Ryan get their way. This is not just about the election either. If heaven forbid Obama is not reelected and the Dems lose congress. We will all have to fight that much harder after the election to make sure we save the safety net. Losing the midterm elections in 2010 was bad enough. What was worse was letting the GOP enact their right wing agenda without a fight for nearly a year.

The silver lining is since Romney and Ryan are lying about Medicare now and especially about how their future budgets would end Medicare AWKI they can’t get their story straight. Sure they have talking points but once you get past the superficial they are both babbling idiots. The reason for this is simple. They absolutely hate Medicare and the rest of the safety net so their spin is just not coming off with any integrity. It would be like Obama trying to spin something he does not believe in like more tax cuts for the rich.

One last point Romney’s latest cynical approach is saying he won’t take the Medicare cuts even in his budget. So this results in extending all that wasteful spending illustrated in your graph. Worse it would make Medicare insolvent by 2016 which would force an abrupt change to the program most likely leading to reduced benefits.

The pyramid imagery is an excellent visual metaphor as well and even illustrates the relative numbers involved top to bottom. Let’s combine visuals and call it a pyramid shaped bouncy castle. You stretch it enough to pop at the sees or puncture one layer below the top and it all deflates.

It brings to mine the great movie Titanic by Cameroon which somewhat addressed the gilded age. The poor little rich girl so miserable in a faux world of excess meets the merry pauper. While the stuff shirts were upstairs in the gold plated ballroom all miserably bored the po’ folk were deep in 3rd class dancing their collective arses off having a great time. The point is thinking money is what makes everyone happy is totally wrong.

The big difference being of course in no way had Obama showed any signs of being a radical. Obama rejects radicalism on both sides.

Whereas RYAND is a true believe that passed a budget in the GOPTEA House the radical RAND would have loved.

RYAND is the avatar for modern day right wing social engineering. He and the modern GOP have no adult understanding that a society is only as good as the way it treats less fortunate. I view society as a big rubber band stretching from the elites to the poor. The more that rubber band is stretched by realities like economic disparity the more the tension grows. Third world societies are so stretched the are just broken rubber bands. The other implication is if you don’t raise people out of poverty their existence will always hold back the heights society can reach. Only unenlightened people think that all humankind is not connected. Like Andrew Sullivan says true conservatives want a stable society but these Social Darwinist are ever expanding the tensions in modern society. In the future when other factors like climate change kick in the world will be headed to more and more conflicts if the RAND-RYAND philosophies win global acceptance.

Adam Smith the creator of capitalism realized this tension in society. That’s why he said business had a fiduciary responsibility and believed in high wages for workers. RAND-RYAND capitalism is not free market capitalism with open competition and upward mobility. They promote Plutocracy where the game is rigged for the elites and where we end up with a group of oligarchies and a few plutocrats that run them.

Not only are RYAND and RAND radical not conservative, they are both hypocrites. Both lived off of government assistance for parts of their lives.

The bottom line is valuing people based on how much money they make or most times what money they were born into like RMONEY is dangerously wrong. If you ask individuals what they value in people they usually say things like honesty, integrity, empathy, kindness, generosity etc which have NOTHING to do with making money. Therefor wanting a society that values those same principles is true human nature and the true values government should entail. Don’t get me wrong imperfect humans creating a society that is just and fair is much more difficult than giving into selfishness but ultimately a selfish society is self destructive. In this way the RAND-RYAND philosophies are just flat out wrong and are hugely just acts of cowardice.

You are spot on again AdLib but I still think we cannot estimate the full political ramifications the the RYAND pick. On the surface the RMONEY and RYAND ticket is so radical and out of touch with the public that you would think Obama would win in a landslide.

The only problem is the economy is still out there and it is what it is. Too many Dems are bad at touting the improvements in the economy since 2008.

Of course you still have opportunists like Howard Fineman and the whole Huff n’ Puff crowd who have a vested interest in telling us how bad things are. The Obama team is going to have to defend the economy sooner or later. The nominal unemployment rate does not scare me as much as the right and wrong track numbers. If this is going to be an election of contrasting visions more people are going to start believing things are going to get better under Obama. I think this will but that’s what he has to sell along with the attacks on the right wing ticket.

I absolutely agree. Ryan is the same guy that passed off a seriously decrepit budget as ‘adult’ and ‘serious’ according to the MSM. He was able to get elected and reelected in a purple district. Dems should not underestimate this guy and the Obama team has about two weeks to define him before Romney is officially the GOP nominee and can unleash his millions and millions in ads.

I totally agree with your political read on this. I find it fitting that the village idiot Romney introduced Ryan as the ‘next president of the United States’ because for the second time in two elections the GOP nominee stupidly picked a Veep more popular with the base than them.

The Obama team is already hitting the Ryan budget which is the right choice. Ryan is the conductor of the right wing engineering train after all. But Obama needs to remind woman voters that Ryan actually voted to end Planned Parenthood and has a ZERO NARAL rating which means he’s even against contraception. I know this isn’t a foreign policy election but Obama still needs to hammer the fact that this is the weakest foreign policy team in recent memory.

AdLib I’ve retweeted this post a few times for two reasons. First I think it is important that we have truly intelligent leaders in office because we face truly difficult problems. Second I think we should discuss the intelligence of leaders more and that’s why I’m discussing my opinion about Obama’s intelligence as well.

I know intelligence is just one part of being a good leader but it’s a big part and tragically we’ve seen what happens when we don’t elect intelligent leaders who always come up with the wrong prescriptions for America.

Ditto Sally has a good point. Sometimes I tend to jumble up ambition with greed because most people’s ambitions in the Reagan greed is good era are seeking greed. But the greatest pols, scientists and artist all have to have a certain level of healthy ambition to succeed. It all depends on what your ultimate motivations and goals are.
