BP, Transocean, and Halliburton in front of Congress…never has there been more buck-passing and finger-pointing and excuse making! It made me want to throw up! And I think I could have written the script…not much outrage from our esteemed representatives. But when people like Mary Landrieu take $1.8 million from Big Oil, what else can we expect?? I know that millions of words have probably been written on the oil spill in the Gulf, but I don’t think that the “average Joe” in this country really understands the long-term implications. The news was bad this morning…the containment dome failed to cap the oil. Seems that methane ice formed and clogged it up. They had to move the dome aside…and we STILL have more than 200,000 gallons of oil spewing into the Gulf every single day! No one has a clue what to do to stop it. This oil field has been reported to be one of the largest in the world and if it all spills into those waters, we will lose the entire Gulf of Mexico for all time. There will be NO more shrimp, oysters, and fish that can safely be eaten. People’s life work will be destroyed. Tourism along that beautiful Gulf shore will be a thing of the past. How much more do we have to pay for the greed of Big Oil???? Cheney’s Katrina indeed! All we need to finish off the Gulf and possibly the entire west coast of Florida is an early hurricane. Although I live far away, I have to admit crying as I write this. What have we done to our planet? When will the politicians wake up? What do we have to do to get action on CLEAN RENEWABLE ENERGY? Just checkin’ in to see what you guys are up to…I can see that it’s business as usual! My pitiful contribution this afternoon is a scary one. It was just reported on CNN that they are really trying to be overly careful, placing that oil containment thingy over the spill. If they don’t do it just right, there is a possibility of further damage to the well head, causing the spill to become much worse…like ten times worse. Instead of having 5,000 barrels per day spewing into the Gulf, we could have 50 THOUSAND barrels per day! I am afraid that unless something is effective soon, the Gulf of Mexico will be permanently poisoned. The coral reefs off the Florida keys are already threatened. It will not take much of a change in currents to take this into the Atlantic and up the coast via the Gulf Stream. I’m absolutely seething, especially since Halliburton was involved. This catastrophe is a direct result of Cheney’s cronies writing the regulations that let them off the hook for those remote cut-off switches that are required by every other country in the world! Too expensive with a price tag of $500,000 per oil rig! Now we can’t cut into Big Oil’s profits…that would be un-American!!! :-{{ I am sure you guys have been on top of this and my comments are probably redundant…but I just had to vent! I lived in New Orleans for a while and I love that area. The wetlands are amazing and we can ill-afford to lose another area like the Delta of the mighty Mississippi. I am so sorry for the people there. It will take years to recover. How can anyone hear of these things and not get livid angry?? We need “GREEN ENERGY POLICY” NOW! Now, about the Buddha…I don’t think he weighed 300 lbs. In fact, the story tells of a “beautiful” prince, strong and athletic. The 300 lb. Buddha may have come from the Chinese as Buddhism spread to their lands. The Chinese considered obesity as a sign of wisdom as well as prosperity…thus, we have these little statues of a fat Buddha. Since the historical Buddha lived on alms and food begged for in the streets, it is less likely that he could have gained that much weight. The statues of Buddha from other countries other than China show him to be lean and trim. I’m just sayin’…. A recent poll found that some 62% of American voters think that it’s a good idea to have a split government…one party controlling the White House while the other controls Congress!! What is wrong with these people?? Have they lost their minds?? For some years now, our legislative process has been in total gridlock. It has never been more apparent than now. The Senate rethugs are holding up literally HUNDREDS of bills that have been passed and sent over by the House. I guess those voters don’t mind more of the same. The Democrats should make hay with this information in the next election…makes you wonder who really is running the government. Thanks for your over-view on Ms. Kagan. There has been considerable interest in her ability to be a “consensus maker” in discussions today. I would premise that Jesus Christ could not sway Roberts, Scalia and Thomas. Thinking that she can convince them to change their votes because they like her and admire her abilities is an exercise in futility. We know where they stand…clearly for the corporate interests in this country, not for us little guys. The sooner we get a couple more true progressives on the bench, the better off we’ll all be. As for Ms. Kagan, this remains to be seen whether she can fill the bill. I will be watching the confirmation hearings closely. I don’t need to recap the headlines; you know the top national problems, and much of the news today was on the idea that the national self-deception of the past 10 if not 30 years has finally been penetrated: our problems are real, serious, and they will not simply go away with the next business cycle. Further, we Obama supporters all have areas of great disappointment with the President – in terms of our expectations 3 years ago vs. the reality so far. But we have a critical choice: we can accept that whoever gets the Republican nod will be somewhere between “not at all to our liking” and “lethal to our democracy” and therefore we can rally to support Obama, or we can let our national problems and political anger fester and watch the country go off the proverbial cliff. The worst of all worlds would be to work like hell with no focus and no attention to Obama’s re-election needs, so that our effort is largely wasted. You should know by now that I’m not a Kool-Aid drinker. I carry no one’s water. I have strong independent opinions. Nonetheless, I here declare that this situation is one of very, very few in my life where I am, however reluctantly, willing to sublimate my own drives – in most areas – to those necessary to get Obama re-elected. We are entering a “political 9/11” situation until the next election. I don’t think it’s an exaggeration to say that if we lose to the political right, there will be no hope left (pardon the entendre). I’ve been telling friends and family for 10 years now that our democracy is gone. If we lose this one, it will never come back. Wisconsin was not an uplifting harbinger. The next few weeks are the calm before the storm. The political power bases in Washington are taking the typical August break – assuming the stock market doesn’t sink another 20%. In any event, after Labor Day, all hell will break lose and it will likely stay that way for 14 months. The question for us then becomes: what do we listen to for guidance, and where and how do we target our efforts? As to guidance, the laser-beam answer: we listen for direction really intently to the White House and the campaign, not to the pundits. Not to the news grabbers. When we need to vent, we clearly so state and do not – ever – try to divert attention out of frustration. This is hard for independent-minded folk like us. So was Normandy. As to focus, I suggest we mentally divide our thinking into 2 major categories: (1) issues and (2) battleground states. On issues, obviously, it’s jobs, jobs, jobs and programs creating them. On battleground states it’s Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin, Virginia, and Florida, and then New Mexico, Nevada, North Carolina, and Minnesota. That is, as of today. As time goes on, the campaign will let us know how the map is playing out. We MUST keep in mind that presidential elections are NOT – repeat NOT – national elections. Electoral votes are tallied state-by-state. No national popularity poll has any electoral meaning. Going nuts for Obama within California or New York is worse than foolish – it helps the Republicans by wasting valuable Obama resources where they have no electoral impact. Therefore I, a lifetime Maryland resident, will be putting in whatever I can to help in Pennsylvania and Virginia, not downtown Baltimore. This is not to say that there won’t be serious work to do in all 51 electoral states. It IS to say that an infrastructure program that does more for Michigan than for NYC is the one we want to support. Keeping EPA’s reach softer in Pennsylvania may be temporarily necessary to keep those folks employed, like it or not. Above all, we simply cannot afford no-return wild goose chases having zero electoral benefit/potential. I don’t know about you, but that’s a harsh reality for me. I like the freedom to go wherever my mind takes me. But a lack of discipline in this election risks a Fascist-vision Bachmann society, or a Yee-Hah Anarchist-vision Perry Society, even if Hidden-vision Chameleon Romney were to win. I have to admit that I have been discouraged in the past few days with Scott Brown’s senate victory and then, this story broke. The machine that we are up against is powerful indeed. So I encourage everyone here to make calls, sign petitions, send emails, and write letters to your representatives in Congress asking them to legislatively do everything they can to stop this insanity! I’m glad to see you again! It’s been a while! I also cut my teeth on The Young Ones and Are You Being Served? Keeping UP Appearances is still hilarious and I watch the reruns when I can catch them. Another good one that came on several years ago was “Waiting for God”…very humorous! They do have some good comedy writers over there.
