My first response to this news was “What is wrong with these people? What could they possibly gain from such a horrible act? Is there no more value of the human lives on board that plane? Does the Koran not condemn the killing of innocents?” And there seems to be no answers to my questions. Sometimes I wonder if the whole dammed world is going crazy! It’s discouraging to know of this terrible hatred running amok in the world. I have no answers but as a nation, I believe we should spend more time in trying to figure out the reasons for their hatred towards us…like our bases in Saudi Arabia. Do we really need to be there? That seems to be a big thorn in their sides. They consider the real estate there to be sacred ground. Perhaps if we left those bases and got off their “holy ground”, that would begin to cool tensions. My electric power went out yesterday about noon. We had a bad ice storm on top of a 2 foot snow. Many homes in my area were damaged by falling trees. We still have some thousands of people without power. But mine is back on and I am warm! Sherri is still not out of the coma. I spoke with my niece earlier and she has still not seen my sister awake. It has been reported by the nurses that she has spoken a few times, but my niece has not been with her when she roused up. Otherwise, things remain the same…no real news. This, in itself, is frustrating. After the first 48 hours passed, we were encouraged and just wanted everything to be okay quickly but that is not what’s happening. We still have a long way to go. She remains in ICU and is receiving excellent care. For that I am so thankful. But I am most thankful for all of you here at the Planet. I still take comfort from all your kind words. I wrote earlier that I have never experienced anything like this online! I do believe in the power of collective thought but I never knew it could have such an immediate and profound effect! The longer she can fight this raging infection, the better the chances of her making it. She is certainly not out of the woods yet, but I have hope. I am hoping to be able to go to her in a day or so. We had a really bad ice storm on top of a record snowfall. Our power was off most of Christmas Day. My car has been buried for almost a week. I think that’s remarkable that there are several of us here! But we do like our “truths”, don’t we! As for other people being uncomfortable, I have not found so much of that, even in my locale in the South. If there is any of that, it’s because they do not know anything about Buddhism. I try to remedy that every chance I have. My personal quest is to put as many people as possible on the “path”. I always envied the French, British, Germans and other Europeans for their traditions and the roots that go back for a thousand years. We never had that in America…only a couple of hundred years’ worth. When I lived in New York City in the 60’s, I envied the Italians for their feasts and festivals, attending whenever I could down in “little Italy”, but I was an outsider…”whitebread” as you say. I loved the Greek people and married one of them. I converted to Judaism and incorporated some of their traditions. In fact, I even kept kosher for a while. I have to admit though that it is a relief to shed all of it and just to celebrate humanity and the good things from all cultures. Being raised a Southern Baptist, becoming a convert to Judaism and then evolving to being a Buddhist atheist, I can certainly share some of your sentiments. Yet, I still have a Christmas tree with the ornaments made by my kids and grandkids from years past. I hate to admit it but the holiday is completely secular for me now…and it hasn’t hurt me a bit! I get the best of all of it! Just an update, we had a really bad ice storm last night and today that took our power out about noon. It finally came on about 6pm and the grandkids and I have had a wonderful day, even if we were a little chilly without heat except for a propane portable heater. We spent the day talking and laughing. But the very best part was this…I had asked my grandson who is a college freshman majoring in music for one gift for Christmas…to play the Bach cello suite for me. Sure enough, he arrived yesterday afternoon, lugging his cello and music through the snow. He played the Bach for me…almost flawlessly by candlelight late this afternoon! I was in absolute heaven!! One of the best Christmases I have ever had! Due to the power outage here, I have not been able to post all day, so here’s wishing that all of you had as nice a day as I did!
