I know that the people here at the planet already know this, but keep religion out of your public schools. Religious freedom? Christian country? What’s the harm? Those are all smokescreen arguments. They will try to push their interpretation of the universe. They will belittle other religions. They will try to convert the children of non-Christians. They will make it impossible to have your child educated without being bombarded with their religious messages. Near 90% of the state schools in Ireland are affiliated with the Catholic Church, some strongly, others less so. Catholic children are given preferential treatment with regard to placement. They teach both the Eucharist and Confirmation sacraments in class. The primary schools are much worse than the secondary schools in terms of pushing a religious agenda as it is almost impossible to have your child exempted. Lastly, they will treat you wanting your child not to be taught their religion as some sort of crazy, insulting request and accuse you of stirring up unnecessary trouble, as if you don’t know your place. They will accuse you of hating Christianity, even if you state that you don’t. My own experience wasn’t very bad, just annoying and occasionally hilarious, but others were and are. In most other respects the schools are rather good. However, this does not excuse the ridiculous nature of religious teaching in public schools. My advice: Keep religion out of public schools. If you want your child educated in the Christian faith, then send them to church. Death is just such a needless waste. You are right though, some people are just mean and bad, but I believe that that can be changed. However, we don’t know how to yet. Also, I believe that everybody is capable of being, for lack of a better word, redeemed. Intellectually, I think that we will eventually be able to fix such things as psychopathy and sociopathy in the future. This means that I cannot write off people. Basically, I believe that people, free of disease and societal pressure, are fundamentally good and that we can change those that aren’t because of those things. As to the Atomic bombings, even if you accept the mass casualties argument that many make – which I don’t – you do not need to destroy a city to demonstrate the sheer power of an atomic bomb, let alone two. I agree, that the mores of the times do matter, but then again, so do the mores of the present. Applying a moral framework to the past is part of how we decide what to do and what not to do in the future. I don’t necessarily believe in condemnation, but something more like recognition. I say this, because when speaking of the past many seem to prefer to gloss over certain “events”, because they won’t look good. Rather than considering the mores of the time, as you suggest, they ignore the “events”. This is why I advocate recognition, without necessarily condemning anything. I agree with you that there are many who don’t care about context, and that usually they’re ignorant of the context. Sorry, but I know little about the American Civil War. Early 20th century Irish history, WW2 history and American history from 1940 to 1970/1980 are the areas of which I know the most.
