They seemed like very nice people, smiling at me and the dogs as we walked by, one of them handed me a booklet with the header “Jesus Saves!”. While I continuing my walk, I started reading the little booklet and was amazed at the “un-Christian” like rhetoric is spewed forth….I was almost tempted, (I would have if I didn’t have the dogs), to sit in on their service and to mention to them that should put an asterisk after the booklet’s title, it should have read: “Jesus Saves”* *Only if you believe exactly the way we believe, if not your going straight to hell. » Posted By BigDogMom On March 7, 2010 @ 10:25 am A Coalition of Church and State – Part 1 Sue, I was thinking last night of my mother’s family in regards your article, and MsBadger hit on a few points that I were going over in my mind. I don’t have time to post right now, going to see my baby sister’s new house, she just closed on it yesterday, she will be picking me up soon. Here’s the short version of what I asking myself, my mother grew up in Wise, Va, heart of hillbilly country and really weird fundamentalist Christianity and out of the 6 the siblings my mother had, only 2 1/2, (the half being an uncle that didn’t become born again until late in life after hitting rock bottom, long story), went towards the extreme end of this religion. So, I was asking myself, they were all brought up going to revivals and watching the snake people with their mother and aunts, so what caused some to stay with this extreme religion and some to go to the other end, towards a more liberal churches. This too shall pass…. I read the “Power of Positive Thinking” and it really changed my life too…try to live by his words everyday and yes, smiling is contagious! There was a couple in our town, both were teachers in the towns school system who’s only son died very young. They set up a small scholarship fund in his name by investing a portion of their salaries every month, which was not very much, over a 35 yr period. In 1985 they were able to give full 4 yr scholarships to two students, one for a boy and one for a girl, from our town to go to their Alma matter Fitchburg State College in Mass, my sister was one of the lucky recipients of this scholarship. She is now a MSW, counciling at risk teenagers for Catholic Family Charities here in the town, and works part time in the school system as a councilor, she is paying it forward. I have lived with mental illness most of my life, my older sister,(in her late 30’s), was finally diagnosed with clinical depression after a major breakdown that hospitalized her. Our family always referred to her as “sensitive”, “moody”, “introverted” while growing up, little did we all know that it actually was a chemical imbalance that caused these black moods. Getting someone with mental illness to take their meds continually was an ongoing battle in our family too. In the beginning when my sister would start to feel better, like your friend, she would stop, only to spiral back downwards…thank God through counciling, (and our younger sister being a the mental health field), she now realizes that she will have to be on medication for the rest of her life. It is extremely stressful for the family, the helplessness that you feel is sometimes overwhelming, because there is very little that you can do to help them, other than to be there for them emotionally. Time, talking it out and some meds will help heal my husband and I think when it gets warmer, sunnier and he is able to get out on the boat and fish, he will feel a lot better…Thank you again, javaz, your heart is pure…. » Posted By BigDogMom On March 4, 2010 @ 10:17 am Thanks e’cat….looking and smelling like Spring today here in CT! More than likely it is from tension and not over exertion…the Chinese say that when you have back problems it’s because you are carrying the weight of the world on your back….all I can do is be there for him. 🙁 » Posted By BigDogMom On March 4, 2010 @ 8:30 am javaz, thank you for your words of inspiration, I think all of us in this country are on overload when it comes to depressing news which is creating fear and uncertainty in every one of our lives today. This constant barrage of negativity coming from everywhere, the MSM, friends and neighbors, will eventually eat us up inside. How each one of us deals with this will come out in different forms, the Tea Party and Coffee Party Movements, along with GROW are just some examples of how we are expressing our helplessness and frustration with the situation. Some people act or act out, some people flee and hide, some people just wallow when faced with a bad situation. I believe this is one of the reasons for my husbands panic attack and depression, and others like him in our country. In my husbands case, he has the sensitive nature of what I call the “starving artist mentality”, where they take on the worlds and others problems and internalize them. The way he solves these problems mentally and emotionally, like many other artists, is not verbally, but through his work. But unfortunately due to the economy the number of projects that he has to work normally on has been cut in half. Therefore his outlet to express his frustration and anger at the worlds ills has been stifled, thus creating, what I would call, a backup emotionally and now it has come out physically. The helplessness that I feel at not being able to make it alright for him, sometimes is overwhelming for me, but I keep on trucking. All I can do is be there for him right now is listen and try not to be over motherly to him, he hates when I smother him…. So, last night I made it a point not to turn on the news last night, (but sneaked a peak at the Ed Show while I was cooking in the kitchen alone), I believe that sometimes watching silly shows, like a good bodice ripping novel every once and a while, is good for the soul. It takes you away from your troubles for a brief moment in time. I also encouraged him to talk to his brother when he called last night, it sounded like a good conversation from the part that I could hear, he was laughing for the first time in weeks. So I think the positive way you have decided proceed through these trying times is an inspiration to all of us, to look for something good in a big pile of bad, and as the saying goes, “If life hands you lemons make lemonade”. It depends on what feels right for you. The Flying Star which uses the Chinese astrology, ie., Year of the Tiger, compass directions, the bagua and Chinese numerology is the most basic and I use that in the house. I look at the Chinese Almanac annually to see what direction the bad “qui” or “chi”, or where killing stars direction is going to be that year and use the Form School for landscape design and auspicious plants list. As a follower of Feng Shui, this will be a decent year for myself, my Zodiac Animal is a Dog, (alas BigDogMom), the Tiger is one of my companion animals. But, unfortunately this is not going to be an easy year for my husband, who is a Monkey, according to the Feng Shui almanac. His main compass position is the North West according to the Bagua, this is not good, because the #5 killing star is now in the North West position this year. And doubly not good for the hubbsters, is the door that we use to enter the house is positioned in the North West also…normally very good all other years for him, but not this one. Now I know some will say that I am foolish for believing in all this mumbo jumbo. I just happen to take a course on Feng Shui garden design, just for something to do in the winter, and was delighted to discover that I had been using the principles Feng Shui all along, so I continued studying it for my personal life and home. I’m not a real die hard like some, no red couch or drapes for me in my living room! But after what happened yesterday with my husband I may consider changing my color scheme! Last night my husband came home early, he was very upset, he had had a panic attack at work, the first time he has ever had one! He said it felt like the walls of his shop was closing in on him, had to go outside and walk around a bit to clear his head. Scared the bejeebus out of both of us, one of the bad things, according to the almanac for this year, would be ill health. So, I have been running around this morning trying to find a metal 6 rod wind chime for my back door area, (metal combats the bad qui), try that in the dead of winter! I then moved my Pio Xian statues to the North West Corner of the house, (close as I could get was the top of my refrigerator). Then immediately got on-line to order a couple more Feng Shui remedies that he can carry with him, let’s hope all this works! Sue wonderful article, when reading V.P. Henry Wallace’s statement, I would have said that this was a current opinion….the first thing that came to me was, they are talking about Glen Beck and Fox News, because that’s what they do, “poison the channels of public information”. You are so right to compare this with Germany in 1930 and the beer hall movement that eventually turned into the Nazis. We have been brought to the brink in our economy and our country, just as Germany was after WWI, our citizens are scared and fearful. This fear then turns into anger, and groups like the promoters of the Tea Baggers, the Christian Right and Glen Beck’s Patriots are looking to cash in on this anger, just as Hitler did in the 30’s. This is the “Perfect Storm” that “The Family” has been waiting for since 1946. I have been watching a lot of Glen Beck lately, not out of curiosity, but out of fear of what this man could do,know thine enemy. He has such a massive following, I fear he fancies himself the new Hitler. Which he will deny, because he is only doing this for his “Country” and is a true “Patriot”, Hitler said these same things. His new thing is his “100 year Plan for America”, to me it sounds like Hitler’s “1000 year Reich Plan”. He plans to tour the country presenting it and gathering a force to implement it. Little too much like Hitler and the ball hall movement for my liking. This man needs to be exposed and discredited, apparently his favorite saying is “Tell a lie long enough and people will begin to believe it”, but what he doesn’t tell his audience is that this quote was stolen from Joseph Goebbels.
