My mother was a bit of a character and as long as I remember, when you were old enough, good enough and had your own money you could get in the family poker game which lasted into the wee hours of the morning – and yes we played for real money and sometimes the pots could get pricey. But it was family and no one ever really minded losing to each other, unless you were thirteen and it was your first pot game and you realized you had to match the pot! My mother would put the turkey in the oven and make a martini and she was ready to go! She played up into her 80’s until her sight got so bad she just couldn’t do it anymore. So that is my family holiday tradition and I miss it like crazy – we had some great time around that poker table. As a side note, that table was covered with my father’s WWII wool Army blanket ( and still is) and it’s as good as new! » Posted By Artist50 On December 25, 2011 @ 8:49 pm Merry Christmas to everyone and thank you for making this a safe and comfortable place to come! Holidays have changed a lot for me the last few years and sometimes it brings joy and sometimes sadness. My parents are now gone and I’ve become the matriarch of my family with three wonderful grandchildren. So old traditions with my siblings and parents have turned into new traditions with my daughter-in-laws in charge. Fortunately, I dearly love them and am glad to relinquish my role as hostess, but part of that is because I no longer have my home, which is also life changing. ( For those of you that don’t know I’m a house mother at a sorority, so that’s my full time residence now.) Christmas with grandchildren under three years old is truly magical! I was lucky enough to stay all night last night with my grandson so we could wake up to Santa’s surprises. After a family dinner last night he was exhausted but he couldn’t close his eyes – he decided he was scared of Santa coming in his house in the middle of the night! I worked in a hospital for a period in registration with many young mothers who had tuition help from the hospital. They all starting taking classes to get into nursing school ( they had not been accepted) and they all got the max from the student loan programs. I only knew one woman that got in the program and got in a degree, she was actually older. The type of Christianity I grew up with has no resemblance to these money making TV preachers who have literally interpreted the Bible to suit their skewed beliefs. I do wonder who really watches the debates and if they see that the audiences have been more of a representation of the party than the candidates. I don’t know how old you are, but the Tea Party is Archie Bunker personified to me – he lived his life in sound bites. It’s so sad to me that a show that was suppose to be poking fun at our insecurities 40 years ago has shown me that collectively bigotry is worse than ever! I thought we were over the black and gay thing years ago, but apparently a lot of people missed that bus! The reasons are because of exactly what you said. I’m thankful I’ve never experienced it. My son and his wife had a baby that died when he was several weeks old and just watching their heartache and going through my own was bad enough, but to lose a child to a violent crime is something altogether different. Women spend most of their lives “doing” for others. No on ever got up from the dinner table and said thanks for doing the dishes to me, but if the kids or ex did them they practically expected an Olympic medal! One of the great pleasures of aging as a woman is saying what you want, when you want and genuinely not caring what others think. I’m not quite there, but every year I feel myself slipping into that mindset and it’s such a freedom. There’s a great book my brother gave me many years ago called, “When I am an Old Woman I Shall Wear Purple”. As to the topic at hand, I have 15 friends from high school (1968) who have always stayed in contact. There’s hardly a day that I don’t receive an email from one of them. We’re spread out from Arizona to Connecticut but at least every 5 years we take a trip. We do not discuss politics because it has been divisive and there a couple RWers that know I will stand up for beliefs.
