But the amazing thing is – this is a TRUE exchange – and what they learn from me, I also learn from them. Recently we had a problem with a stalker from a past life. Who rushed FIRST to defend me? My Afghans! I heard from children in Germany and children in Afghanistan, and those here. All wanted to assure me that they would offer me their undying love and protection – a rather Napolean Dynamite moment, I must say. Pedro offers you his protection…… Helping a refugee family get “settled” – going and having tea with them once a week, having them to your home – or working with a student, who one day will have the opportunity to affect real change back home (I remind them they are younger and healthier than most of the old farts) can be uplifting. Not only do you get the idea of “wow, I’m doing some good” – BUT you get love back in spades. I feel I am the lucky one and the one to whom good is done. Thank you for your nursing care. My refugee dad is in the hospital now, very very sick w/ sepsis from a long term untreated infection. I made “American mom” threat to “Pashtun dad”, and told him NEVER again would I take “no, I don’t need doctor” for an answer. He had one chance, blew it, and now must answer to me. I threatened to carry him on my back to the doctor if I needed to,next time. I wish you had seen his grin!!! I think he is glad to not have to always be the one in charge, just like we all enjoy the break. Mostly, I think of you and all those who so tirelessly serve those in need. We are very very lucky to live in such a place. I wonder what my Afghan boy will think when he reads the story about the attack on the medical team? When the Blov went to Palestine/Israel in 2003, he said there were fields and fields of destroyed olive trees, some hundreds of years old. The settlers had cut them down, even though they belonged to Palestinian families, because “snipers might hide in the trees”. It broke his heart to see the destruction. And it’s much like the Russians did in Afghanistan, destroying trees. Worse to me is the story of Qalquilya, which sits over the acquifer/water source. Very green and beautiful. The settlers installed pumping stations just outside the “fence” (read; wall much larger than the Berlin wall) to divert the water from the fields to the yards. They also completely surrounded the town with the “fence”, and bulldozed loads of dirt/rubble on the road leading to the town, removed all the signs leading to the town, etc. Nice neighbors, eh? We were VERY involved in this issue for a few years. In some ways, it was more disheartening than even Afghanistan. And trust me, that’s saying a lot. Can’t stay to play – we are off to buy new appliances for our kitchen! Also taking off dated wallpaper (whose idea was THAT?) and repainting. It’s only one room, so should only take one week, right??? (HA) Have a good Friday night! Tomorrow I get to go see little Timmy O’Brien. Can’t wait. Sr. Joan Chittister, one of my ‘sheroes’, said it’s the women and children who most often pay the price of war. When the eldest son in my Afghan family came home this summer (after his first trip to Afghanistan in 12 years), he remarked that although he was overjoyed to see family and friends, he was so saddened to see the poverty everywhere, especially the children. It makes me even more sad that those of us in the west who would adopt and care for and love these children will never have a chance to do so (it is not allowed – only families can take them). And yet Karzai and his creepy brothers make millions. How caring are THEY about their home? One of my dear friends, who runs the pre-departure orientation for the YES kids, is writing a book about the program – the ones who ran away to Canada, the ones who returned home to make changes, and ones like mine who went home and are now back here in college. When it does, just lie back and snuggle down and read a book. You deserve some time off. Looks like the weekend was quite….”interesting”…..here. I took time off from everything yesterday, having labored to remove a mess o’ weeds from my native grass on Sunday. Today I should have a contractor beginning a horrendous few weeks of work. We are having he popcorn removed off our ceilings – didn’t seem to be a big issue when we bought the house 15 years ago, but now it is probably the most unpopular texture EVER, so it needs to happen. Sigh. It means taking EVERYTHING out, room by room, and tolerating much dust and distraction. I leave next week for my first vacation – and a much needed one – in a year. Can’t wait! Going to see my baby girl, who just came back from AFghanistan and has started school outside of Santa Fe. Long road trip by myself – AHHHH!! I always find it gives me the time to just think. I have solved the world problems many times over in my head on such trips – usually driving from Seattle to San Antonio. I hope I come up with creative solutions to fund our new organization; we need to get going ASAP. So much need….. Take care, dear one. Hate to be a “traitor” to you, but today/last night, we “broke” summer here – rain, glorious much needed rain, fell all night and continues this morning. No watering chores for me today! Plus the highs all week are under mid-90sF. Doesn’t mean we won’t get a few more heat spikes, but I think we are at last on the down side. Truly, we had very few over 100F days this summer, which I hope to be my last as caretaker of the garden. I have loved it, but am ready to let go. I wish you rain and coolness. I’m off and running, but wanted to thank you again for your morning blogs. If only my mornings were not so busy right now….. We are expecting -eagerly in my home – a “cool down” to only low 90sF this week. September comes a few weeks early, if it happens. We are selling our lovely little home, complete with its wildscape, because I can no longer tend to it like before. The pond, the plants, all take so much out of me now before my day REALLY starts. But wsomeone will find it, and love it, I am sure. If not, we own it outright (Thanks to Microsoft, where the Blov worked for decades) so we can lease it out if the market does not improve.
