I had a “practice” marriage of 3 years; it only lasted as long as it did because I was the first one in my family to get a divorce. He is a lovely man, and I went to his only child’s wedding. I enjoyed seeing his brother again – the MIL, not so much. I have been married to the Blov for 29 years; we married after only six months because I used the “practice marriage” to teach me what was really important in a lifelong mate. Like Cher above, it is that sense of humor. You guys have never seen it, but the Blov is truly the funniest person I know. God love him for that; it has saved him from untimely deaths many times over. I mean, a man who knows he has pissed you off tremendously and then does the mating dance of a ruffed grouse – what’s not to love? How can I be mad when I am doubled over in laughter? Also agree with Kes about bacon. Stilettos, not so much. Agree with Cher again on what I believe truly makes a great marriage (or at least a marriage that lasts). It has long been my belief that for every single decision to be made – do you sweep the porch once a week or every day? When do you empty the dishwasher? Who should go get the milk? – that decision will be more important to one person than to the other. If it’s important that the porch be swept every day, then take responsibility and do it. If you’ve been to the store twice in a day, and you still need milk because “somebody” likes cereal at night, and you don’t want to go – then hold out and make “somebody” go. For every decision, it matters more to one person than to the other. Give up on the ones that are not as important to you, and give in and do it yourself if there is a stalemate and you want your way. But for the ones that matter deeply, hold out and fight like hell. And never be to proud or too stubborn to say “I was wrong, and I’m sorry.” And know that a true soulmate is a gift in this life. Happy Anniversary to the Missriss AdLib, and to you. But God spared me the ultimate punishment, of knowing I had hurt someone. And now I am much older and a little wiser. I actually quit drinking some years ago; now I have about 3 beers a year, and a few “staff meetings”. I find nothing wrong with it; I just prefer to be the designated sober one. I tell all my kids – non-Afghan this time, to whom I am “Auntie” – that they can call me anytime day or night, and I will lovingly come get them, drive them to my home, let them sleep it off, and then take them for a crudo cure the next AM. Fortunately, my kiddos seem to understand the concept of designated driver. The Pup told me of a young girl whose family (their neighbor) was slaughtered by the T’ban. His father is a doctor, and an unbelievable sweet, caring man. He took in the young neighbor girl, and helped rear her until she was 17. At that time, her relatives in Iran(?) came to “claim” her so that they could sell her in marriage. Sad but true. Another true story: while on a tour at an amazing ranch here in Central TX, my husband and I were approached by a young man who wanted to know how many children we had. He was saddened to hear we had none, because we were “the type who needs to be breeding, not these Mexicans”. I was speechless- hard to do for me. Fortunately, I knew the ranch owner well and told him about that offensive comment. The rancher was livid, and said that young man would never again set foot on his ranch. He hasn’t, to my knowledge. All that being said: my grandmother had 15 children, 13 of whom were living while I was a child. I have 32 first cousins on that side. We did our share of damage, both to the planet and to Aunt Peggy’s back yard. And we weren’t religious right. I have a dear friend from Nashville who was going to be in NZ and Australia for most of March (due in Christchurch on 3/5, to be specific) and I was worried about them. All was well for them, but they are unbelievably saddened by what they see. They love NZ very much, and have enjoyed every tour there (he is a musician BTW). I loved your warnings on preparedness. I grew up on the south coast of Texas, and hurricanes were our major threat. I no longer live on the coast, but I still have 2- 5 gallon bottles of water in the garage (I use them camping each year and replace them w/ new), canned tuna and ham and lots of beans, candles, extra batteries for everything. I’m almost 60, but still don’t let my gas tank get under half full due to the lessons I learned from my daddy. I guess it doesn’t matter which type of disaster slams you – it’s just good to be as prepared as possible. I took my Afghan students to New Orleans in 2008 to see the aftereffects of Katrina. I have the utmost love and respect for nature and the power it provides. Working in the ninth ward was a lesson for us all. I once lived for a decade in the Pacific northwest (husband worked at Microsoft). I was terrified of earthquakes. None happened while I was there, but it never was totally off my mind, either. Fires, tornadoes, earthquakes. They scare the crap out of me. Hurricanes for me are a known danger, and much more manageable. I will keep you and your fellow countrymen in my thoughts and prayers.
