Although my parents (especially my daddy) also “grew up” and rejected racism in their later years (a full rejection, with friends of every hue and belief welcome in our home), I remember the N-word as a child. My grandmother referred to the southern “polite” term: nigras. I left so eagerly and moved to WA state, which is how I know about the banana belt and Sequim. After 5 years, the sound of the cicadas got to me. I began taking leaves of absence, to drive back to Texas each summer for 6 to 8 weeks. I would go then because I worked in the legal field, and judges were off bench in August. Finally, after Lonesome Dove was published, I realized I needed to come “home”. I wanted the irritable old man, all bowlegged, standing in the check out line, muttering “If’n you don’t hurry up, I’m a fixin’ to hit you in the hai-ed with this can of damn beets” at the frustratingly slow person, asking for too many favors and bringing too many items to the express lane. I missed the heat, so thick you could not breathe in that warm, sticky air. I missed the first glimmer of a breeze, late in the day. I missed hearing the sound – !! – of ice cubes melting in a glass of tea. I missed it all, the fussing and feuding. So we came back. And I have worked and fought and stood for what I believe is good and true and right, never backing down. I am proud of my work with children others were quick to suspect as “terrists”. Some of the most suspicious folks stepped up, took a chance, lost their hearts and are converted. I try and be polite and speak the truth. But now I am older, and more tired. And watching the conniving and the back room Republican deals have left me empty, and longing to return to the Northwest, to watch eagles and relax. But what I have to say is important, I think. At least it’s my POV. I am 59 years old. I have never smoked a day in my life. Each of my parents smoked 2 packs/day until they died, both from lung cancer (my dad from adenocarcinoma from working in a shipyard and smoking, and my mom from oat cell carcinoma, only caused by cigarettes). They left me an orphan at age 37. They also left me unable to ever scuba dive because I have a bleb on my lung due to growing up in a home and riding in a car with smokers. I have had my lung collapse three times. They would NEVER have caused me harm knowingly. I would give almost anything to be able to dive, as snorkeling is the closest to heaven I will likely ever get. I would drive 4.5 hours each way, each weekend, to go home to see my dad when he was dying. It took six months. He had given up cigarettes years before, gained 15 pounds, and took up smoking again because he did not want to be “fat” (he was 5’8″ and weighed 145 lb. normal and 160 lb. “fat”). My most vivid memory of this time of his dying was watching him, looking like a Holocaust survivor, eating Ensure and trying to gain 1/2 lb. Even his death couldn’t make Mom quit. She tried Nicorette, but gave up. So seven years later, she died a very painful and sad death. Remember how I said above how I would give almost anything to be able to dive? Well, I would give everything to see my folks again. No almost to it. So….people choosing to smoke hurt others and leave their children (however old they may be) with the image burned in their brain of their tortured and protracted and sad deaths. The deaths would have happened anyway, and maybe even from cancer – but maybe not. And maybe not at ages 65 and 67 respectively. If they ate bad food and didn’t exercise, they would still die. Everyone does, now, don’t they? While it may be OK if you are an adult to do as you like, when you are a parent, you owe it to your children to not let them see you kill yourself slowly, no matter the means. Would this have played some role? I mean, Mo-Mo admitted his part some time ago, but who ever listens to him???? Maybe more cred from a member of his government, and maybe with Meghri’s (?? can’t remember the guy’s name) release, and non-death (despite assertions he was dying), it has a tinge of revenge to it. 2) Could there be a zen like strategy of working AGAINST a guy we recently “friended” and working WITH forces that contain many hostile to us (in fact, the same ones supported by al-Qaeda)? A jiu-jitsu type maneuver? It has been my experience from working with Muslims that most of them are unaware that the U.S. in fact fought WITH Muslims in the Balkans war. It takes them aback and by surprise. I’m just wondering if this isn’t some of the thought (or lack thereof, depending upon your POV) that also played in the decision to intervene. We lived in Redmond WA for years, and went to the peninsula often. Sequim had a restaurant with big old apple pancakes, which we loved. He let the youth of Bamiyan know about your kind letter/email because he wanted them to realize that what you say or do can reverberate around the world. He wanted them to know that they can and did make a difference, if only to provide words of encouragement and support. He strongly believes that the Afghan government owes Japan much money and assistance in efforts to rebuild, as Japan has done so very much for Afghanistan.
