And I agree with Jan’s call for keeping the criticisms more substantive. And when it comes to people doing nasty things, I prefer the response of indignation to hatred. I just did a quick survey of the 4 most recent pages of posts and found that out of the last 50 posts, there were two about HuffPo, including this one and 48 out of 50 that were not. That is not reflective of a site that is overly-focused on HuffPo. Let’s add to that two realities. First, many of our bloggers here came to The Planet from HuffPo, some continue blogging there. Also, HuffPo has become a behemoth in world of political press and what appears on their site has an influence on this nation’s politics. For both of those reasons, HuffPo is as valid and worthy a topic to discuss as Fox News and their manipulation of the news. I would hate to see any legit topics avoided because of concerns that it would brand The Planet as an anti-whatever site. The one thing we do discourage with regards to HuffPo is bringing the soap operas and personal conflicts from there to here. This is not entirely an academic question, given that in December HuffPo astonished media watchers by securing $25 million in additional funding from Oak Investment Partners, a Palo Alto, Calif., venture-capital firm. The timing was particularly amazing, given that the lefty uber-blog’s traffic has lately been plummeting — a possibility my colleague Nat Ives examined way back in October. At the time Arianna Huffington insisted to Nat that the “Huffington Post is no longer as dependent on politics,” and so she wasn’t particular worried about the usual post-election readership swoon of politically-focused publications. And this section: Consider, for starters, HuffPo’s revenue. Consider this, if you wanted to beat a Teabagger candidate, the best thing you could do as a Progressive incumbent would be to sponsor legislation requiring Obama to prove his country of birth, killing HCR and pass a law allowing the unborn to carry guns in the womb. Clinton pushed our middle class, unions and U.S. manufacturing off a cliff with NAFTA. His conservative policies greatly outnumbered any liberal policies. And that’s where we want the country to go? I think the most impact we can have as a community is through strength in numbers. IMO, strong letters or petitions that bear the names of numerous people and a website will have more impact than a letter with a single name signed on it. However, creating a Letter To The Editor that all members can sign their own name to and submit to their local papers is another way to make a coordinated impact. There is no reason that we need to look at sending a petition or letter individually to local newspapers and our specific congresspeople as a separate choice, I think it is something we should do with all letters and petitions we create. Depending on whether there are general issues being discussed or specific actions, the former would be more appropriate to a letter and the latter would be more appropriate to a petition. So, with regards to the issues I suggested, here is what I would plan to draft for each item: a: A letter to be endorsed by PlanetPOV and signed by all members who would be interested, mailed to President Obama, Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi and mailed by members independently to their Congresspeople. Also, sent by members to their local papers as a Letter to the Editor. b. A petition endorsed by PlanetPOV and signed by all members who would be interested, a link to the petition could be placed at HuffPo, DailyKos, etc. for others to come here and add their names if interested. Members would be encouraged to email the people they know who might also want to add their names. It would then be mailed to Congress (Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi and by members to their congresspeople). c. Same as “b.” In all cases, the letters and petitions would be posted here under Take Action! for more people to sign subsequent copies that would be sent. Also, on issues involving Congress, I would suggest hard copies mailed and emails following up with the text of the item and a link to it at the site. » Posted By AdLib On January 24, 2010 @ 8:47 pm Nellie, I’m just offering these suggestions as a member. My priorities are: a. Bold action by Congress and Obama in legislation, accomplish more Progressive agenda issues and don’t move to the middle, forget about bipartisanship and eliminate the Filibuster. b. Continue HCR, break out the consumer protections from expanding Medicare, pass the former with 60 votes then pass the latter with 51 votes via Reconciliation. c. Immediate Congressional action to regulate corporations, especially any who have received TARP, subsidy money or government contracts (taxpayer money in any way) from campaign spending.
