The difference between the way you and I and many others keep a healthy suspicion of the powerful and these conspiracy nuts is that they have to rely on there being an outrageous agenda and no legit evidence of a conspiracy. For us, the motivation is to keep an eye on power, for them the motivation is abject fear of anyone and anything that doesn’t reflect the superiority of their white race, male gender, Fundamentalist Christian religion and local (often rural) environment. Great point, most terrible and genuine conspiracies, from Watergate to Iran Contra to lying about WMDs in Iraq to force a war, are all products of Republicans. A list of Democratic “conspiracies” would be a pretty spartan list beside the long Republican list. Racism seems predicated on the necessity of fabricating white victimhood. How else could white people justify the guilt of slavery and their violence and hatred of black people since then? They have to believe they are defending themselves, they are the real victims who have been and are being wronged…thus their blatant immorality is justified in their minds and those of their fellow racists in their communities. Peter Schweizer who wrote Clinton Cash is such a documented Republican hack (he was Sarah “Africa-is-a-Country” Palin’s foreign policy adviser) that his book’s charges should rightfully be looked at as partisan propaganda. I do agree that whoever the Dem nominee is, needs to be fully supported and win. My point though is that I don’t think it helps the party or the nominee for there to be a pre-selection before it’s decided by the primary as to who the nominee will be. The whole inevitability thing is dangerous as Hillary learned in 2008. She’s being much more deliberate about not being viewed in the same way this year which is smart. Whoever the Dem nominee is will have to win votes from independent voters as well as Dem voters and the primary process gives them a better chance to present their platform, views and personality to non-Dems as well. So a lively and engaged Dem primary would be far more helpful than a quick cakewalk for Hillary to the nomination. And just as Obama was 30% behind her in the December 2007 polls, another Dem nominee who could be unlikely to win today may end up as the best candidate in 2016 once Dem voters get to know him/her. Hillary is of course the likely nominee but the Democratic Party shouldn’t toss democracy and the primary process out the window just because they’re so confident and pleased about Hillary being the nominee. If she is as strong as many view her to be, that will become very apparent in the primary. But like a top athlete, she needs to compete and prevail in the first rounds of competition to prepare her for the finals. That’s my main issue with at least rhetorically handing her the nom ahead of time, she needs to earn it like all Dem nominees in recent times. It will be good for her, for the party and the democratic process. Afterall, if she was virtually appointed to be the nominee because DNC operatives chased any real competition away from running against her, the base won’t be as enthusiastic to support her as they would be if she won the nom in a genuine contest. If anyone but Jeb wins the Repub nom, you can bet one line of attack will be about the Clinton Dynasty, Hillary’s sense of entitlement and such. One way to help disarm that is for her to win a real political competition against other legit Dems. Again, whoever the Dem nominee is will have my support, the idea of any of these Repubs winning is a nightmare. I live in CA, our homes and buildings are built to standards that recognize that we have earthquakes. I guarantee you that they don’t do that in OK, TX, etc.. So far. We didn’t accept that as inescapable though in 2007 and kept ourselves open to other possibilities and things worked out pretty well. As to the “show” Hillary’s putting on now, I agree that the plot points are those that Dems and Progressives want to see but this is all so calculated. She is playing the role of the humble elitist wearing populist clothes but this is a costume, she’s putting on a show. I wouldn’t bank on her keeping the plot the same if she becomes President. Just months ago she was dissing Obama and aggressively courting Republicans by supporting war, more of their issues and their dislike of Obama. When that backfired and faced with the Elizabeth Warren wing of the Dems not supporting her, she’s changed the character she’s playing but she is playing a character and a scenario that is calculated to win over the voters she needs. She wants to win, has a huge braintrust working with her to craft her public persona and “show” for one central reason, so that she wins, not because she has been a crusader previously on any of the issues she now claims are so important to her. That said, her show is absolutely far better than the shows and characters that the Repubs are playing out. They’re doing the same thing but in my mind, they’re far more obvious because they’re so similarly conformed to the same “outraged warrior against ‘them'” who wants to take the country back for old, white and Fundamentalist Christians. These Repubs are more cynical IMO, they know that they’re all trying to outdo each other in promising bullshit they know would never come to pass (“Imagine the end of the IRS!” “Imagine the Bible being the highest law of the land!”). They’re all just playing the rubes to get their votes and telling them huge fantasies about how they’ll pander to them if elected…just to get elected. Not to say that they wouldn’t do their best to sabotage all that they see as an obstacle to their “cult” having supreme and lasting power (and their backers greatly increasing their wealth and avoiding taxes) but their universal faux outrage at manufactured offenses is the script they all follow like bad actors (every meaning of that phrase intended). Is Hillary a better potential President than any Republican? Yes. Would most Dems be pleased with her stands on many policies if she was elected? Might they also be displeased with many of her policies, far more than Obama? I think so. But a realist about Presidential campaigns and how manipulative they necessarily are today, has to question if she truly believes the more liberal and Progressive things she says at this point in the campaign or is she just trying to make sure she isn’t outflanked on the left and beaten by another Barack Obama and may abandon her support of these positions if she did win?
