In any case, with people so rarely protesting physically, there’s a lot less competition for media attention if a protest is clever enough. As we know, the MSM is always looking for the most visually “exciting” protests to cover, whether or not they represent a lot of people (as the Teabaggers at town halls proved). Again, a bit of wit and media savvy in planning how and where to protest could go a long way in getting attention to the issue at hand. On the other hand, the MSM is happy to ignore protests, even huge ones, if they are anti-status-quo marches. I say, use the MSM’s need for visuals against them, that’s their weakness. An initial thought. It seems that such movements usually stem from a focus on a specific event or issue. MoveOn.org started as a small group just calling for the GOP Congress to “move on” from trying to impeach Pres. Clinton. The Teabaggers began and principally continue as a corporately financed “astroturf” group but have attracted many people with the narrow issue of fear over big government (when black people who are Dems run it, that is). I think this approach of a simple, focused issue can be found as a repeatedly effective way for splinter movements and groups to start off. The problem with starting off with a variety of issues is that it plants the seeds for internal conflict to destabilize and possibly sabotage the launch of a group. A wide variety of people can come together to support a single issue but are unlikely to agree down the line on a variety of issues. So IMO, the first task in starting a group is focus, purpose and unanimity. As the group grows and evolves and represents more issues, some members will leave and others will join but the group will have established itself as a stable entity.. A group could focus like a laser on activities and initiatives based on a single issue to hammer on and have a very simple message when seeking to recruit members. This would also help to strongly define the group publicly, to potential members and eventually the MSM. Once established and having members sold on the populism of such a group, it could expand as MoveOn did from a handful of people to millions, covering a wide range of issues and being very active and influential.
