Consider this though, despite all the condemnation from Repubs, none have come out to say they wouldn’t support him if he won the GOP nomination.

So calling Trump a bigot but being wiling to support him to take the presidency kind of disqualifies the appearance of criticism.

Trump is the best positioned candidate to win the GOP nod and the most toxic candidate destined to lose a general election by a huge margin.

I think that if we really want to defeat the bigots and pro-fascist anti-American Republicans goosestepping to Trump’s tyrannical proclamations, we really do need Trump to win the GOP nom and be destroyed in the General Election. The extremists/Tea Party’s hold on the GOP will be broken after their candidate blows up the GOP.

As the saying goes, sunlight is the best disinfectant. So let’s hope the human bacteria powering Trump’s poll numbers come out with him to show themselves to the nation with him as the GOP candidate so they and their insanity can all be taken down by the nation…and thus discouraged from being repeated in following elections.

Nothing is copied more than success and nothing is abandoned more than failure. And watching Trump crushed on election day would be pretty damn sweet! The guy who always brags about what a winner he is, shown up to be one of the biggest losers in history? All the PR he may have thought he was getting from this campaign will be shredded. How often do you see failed candidates in the media after they lose? The just desserts for Trump would be winning the nom, losing the GE “yugely” then becoming a pariah that neither the GOP or the American public wants to see again.

escrib, this should make you feel a little less worried, 30% of 30% is actually 9% of American voters embracing that maniacal fascist Trump…which leaves 91% of voters not supporting him.

The approximate total percentage of GOP voters who support “outsider” GOP candidates is around 50% so that would be 15% total of the voting public. And many of these voters have said in polls that they would never vote for Trump.

The more moderate Repubs supporting the “insiders” are mostly anti-Trump in their sensibilities. There’s a reason why Trump can’t break out past a ceiling of high 20’s to low 30’s in the polls, that’s the most support he can muster out of the GOP.

As far as how scary the Trump supporters are, I’m right with you. I can imagine them shopping online for their Trump armbands and brown shirts. But as I mentioned in the article, these racists and bigots have been around since the US was founded, it’s just that nowadays, thanks to the GOP’s stripping of any conscience or decency, they feel free to openly display their bigotry and love of white fascism.

The KKK, neo-Nazis, abortion-doctor-killing Christian extremists, anti-government paranoid militias and terrorists have unfortunately been around for a long time. They’ve just got a reality show now to guest star in, “Donald Trump’s WHO WANTS TO BE A DISGUSTING BIGOT?!”

When one wipes away the obvious propaganda from the issue, it is pretty black and white. There is no legitimate argument for all Americans to be able to buy assault weapons and huge clips of ammo as well as an unlimited stockpile of ammo. All of that is intended for only one thing, mass killings. That is not what the 2nd Amendment expresses to any sane person, otherwise, if mass-killing weaponry is covered by the 2nd Amendment, we should all have the right to own drones that fire missiles, grenade launchers, flame throwers, tanks and attack helicopters and even dirty bombs.

I think the way to approach this argument is to point out that even those who are the most vociferous about the 2nd Amendment agree that there are limitations (hard to believe that even the looniest gun nuts would think that everyone in the country is entitled to own a nuke) and so the issue isn’t IF there should be restrictions but where that line should be drawn.

As we sane folks know, there are always limitations to Constitutional rights (like for the 1st Amendment, not being able to yell “Fire!” in a crowded theater, libel and slander, inciting a riot, etc.) so the argument needs to shift to where the limitation should be.

Gun owners can be assured that they will always have a right to their guns…just not guns intended solely for the mass killing of human beings. That is not unreasonable. So again, my initial proposals would be:

1. Ban assault weapons and any other guns that are built to kill masses of people.
2. Limit the clip sizes on all guns.
3. Limit the amount of ammo people can purchase and store and require registration for ammo purchases.
4. Require gun manufacturers to add the existing technology to their guns that both tags bullets with the gun’s ID and requires a fingerprint reader to fire (imagine how many accidental shootings by kids and others and those who steal guns would be prevented).
5. Remove the anti-liability laws that protect the gun industry and dealers from liability when their negligence results in the deaths of innocent people.

I know the NRA-owned Repubs will block all gun control laws but since 90% of Americans believe in better gun control laws, pounding on this could help Dems eventually retake both houses (after a hopefully corrective 2020 election) and be able to put already seasoned legislation through swiftly.

KT, I think that the NRA has set up the perfect weaponized society so all that Christian/Muslim/Racist/etc. extremists have to do is decide that they want to do a mass murder and they can do so.

Combine that with a concerted effort by ISIS to derange people and things get terrible very fast.

I would support your proposed restrictions on all military type weapons though the Tea Party wackos would go nuclear. I don’t know why anyone really needs a semi-auto gun. If anything, all these mass murders prove that the “good guy with a gun” BS is just that. There was a good guy with a gun in San Bernadino and he smartly took cover against two lunatics firing assault weapons. So more people carrying guns will only end up with more accidental shootings and more rage or fear based shootings of innocent people.

Oh yeah, that’s all the Repubs have now, fear and hatred. Scare as many people as they can that the evil Muslims are coming for them and they need to buy guns to protect themselves and know that racist hatred of all Muslims (like hatred of Latinos, African Americans, etc.) is not just a must but it is what any patriotic American should feel.

James, these are indeed all the same Tea Partiers who have been driven by their racism to attack Obama since he was inaugurated as President. They’re emboldened now by this surge in open bigotry against Syrian refugees to spout greater bigotry.

And of course, everything bad that happens in the world is Obama’s fault (and nothing was ever Bush’s fault).

We are heading into a lot more ugliness, especially with the bigoted Repubs running for President getting a lot of attention, but I think there are enough people who learned from the fearful stampede after 9/11, not to let the fear and hate mongers prevail.

And fortunately, one of those people is in the White House.

I am getting very uncomfortable about how fear is being gobbled up and regurgitated by our media, politicians and many Americans. It’s the same sickly fear-stink but not as intense as happened after 9/11.

Did you see all the Dems voting in The House for the virtual blocking of admitting Syrian refugees into the US? Really? We have to watch Dems join the stampede again to xenophobia and Islamophobia?

It’s really pissing me off.

BTW, it’s not being out of line at all to point out that when ISIS has taken lives of non-white, non-Christians, America and its media and politicians show little interest.

As you and others know, there is the image of America as an enlightened, unprejudiced beacon of justice but the reality for the country is that for the most part, white Christian lives matter most.

Republican Governors Revel in Their Cowardice And Prejudice While Empowering ISIS

I think your first two items are actually all they focus on but like an algebra problem, “Who” to blame doesn’t even need to be a variable, it’s actually a constant, it’s always the Democrats and their presidents.

I do think that the racism Trump has been whipping up is as horrible as the nationalistic groups around Europe and the world, something many of us have been bewildered and offended by as they gain power. Thankfully, the racist and bigot vote is limited to those who already support Trump or Carson, around 50% of the Repub base which is only around 12% of all voters. There is a “yuuge” firewall (that Mexico didn’t have to pay for) against Trump and any accompanying white supremacy candidates would be stopped by when the full electorate comes out.

It has been this ugly before, decades ago when racism and white supremacy were both seen as positive Christian and American values. But the days of such people being able to win majorities in national elections is over and the mostly older voters who make up much of this base are dying out.

I’ve said it before and will once again suggest that 2016 could be the modern day Goldwater election for the Republicans, putting up an extremist, offensive candidate that turns the country farther to the Dems and Progressives and damages the Repub brand for decades.

And you know I’m looking forward to a GOP civil war exploding afterwards that leaves the party inoperable and in ruins. I’m just that kinda guy!

monicaangela, you completely nailed it! Horrible but true, as long as Christians and white people are maniacally killing innocent Americans, there’s no need for Republicans to blame an entire religion or race for it or seek immediate action to stop it.

No question, this just feeds into the xenophobia and bigotry of their base…and unfortunately, many more Americans are easily frightened into leaning their way on fearing Muslims.

The rest of us have to stand up this time and not allow the country to cower and retreat into Islamophobia under the Paul Ryan justification of “Better safe than sorry.”

monicaangela, I think you’re right, though the behavior of the Repub governors is that of cowards, their intent is really to whip up fear and Islamophobia in Americans for political gain. They don’t care if they tear this nation apart and represent Americans as terrified, ignorant bigots, as long as it helps them grab power and pour more trillions of dollars into the hands of the wealthy who profit from war.

Indeed, the true and ugly history of American bigotry is not as recognized as it should be but in almost every instance, minorities have been demagogued, oppressed, imprisoned and killed.

Beginning with the genocide of Native Americans, slavery, anti-antisemitism, hatred of the Irish and Italian when each came over in large numbers, anti-gay bigotry, hatred of Muslims after 9/11 and of course, hatred towards Latinos.

On one hand, America can be a melting pot over time, oppressed minorities can gradually become seen by a majority of white Americans as peers but there will always be a section of the population, our institutions and leaders that hold on tightly to their bigotry.

There is a terrible irony to the fact that France opposed going to war in Iraq with Bush and is now the victim of terrorism that was born by the war they opposed. And the US Congress, in one of their most ridiculous and shameful actions, did indeed pass a bill to change the menu at the commissary in the Capitol so it read “Freedom Fries”. And that Iraq war sure did bring just the opposite of freedom to just about everything except french fries, didn’t it?

For Republicans, something is only wrong unless they want to do it. They’re decrying the killing of innocent people in Paris by ISIS because it furthers their maniacal schemes…but they’re simultaneously screaming for indiscriminate and massive bombing in Syria where they would kill scores of innocent Syrians.

Killing innocent people is wrong for others but just an unfortunate necessity for them.

In a way, ISIS has so much in common with RW Repubs and is actually demonstrating aspects of the ultimate Republican government. A state controlled by fundamentalist and perverted religious beliefs, a mercenary and unrelenting campaign for dictatorial power, total intolerance and hatred for those who don’t conform to their beliefs, delusions that their actions, no matter how horrible, are the will of God and overall, a lack of compassion and respect for the lives of other human beings.

No wonder the GOP is acting like ideal partners of ISIS. There used to be a phrase, “Politics end at the water’s edge”, meaning of course that when there is a critical international situation, all Americans come together. With the pile of slime the GOP has devolved into, such a sentiment makes no sense to them. When there is a threat to America, Republicans’ first reaction is to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with our enemies in attacking our President.

President Obama is not President of United Democrats. He is President of all Americans including Republicans and I find it giving aid and comfort to America’s enemies for Republicans to always joining them in despising the President of the United States at every opportunity.

As to your points about the oligarchs thinking they can eternally take everything of value from the masses and manipulate their systems of government to keep them oppressed, history shows that they will always fail ultimately…and how powerful that revolt is against them becomes is determined by the degree of their oppression.

ISIS can be degraded down to a far smaller threat but you can’t destroy ideas with bombs and bullets. It’s kind of amazing that so many have forgotten the lessons of Iraq so quickly. How did “wiping out all the bad guys” work there?

The first step has to be diplomatic. The U.S. has to work with France, Russia and other partners to negotiate a cease fire between the Syrian rebels and Assad’s government, with a specific timetable for Assad leaving and Syrians choosing their new leader. Then there is a role for military action against ISIS in Syria from all sides and it should be led by Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Jordan and other Arab nations.

That would be destructive to ISIS on multiple fronts. Both in losing numbers of fighters and land they control but also destroying the propaganda of this being a war between cultures, which is what their recruiting is based on.

With all that profoundly damaged, ISIS won’t be totally destroyed but it will be over as a potential caliphate and the recruits will no longer come. Their power will be shrunken, they will be a marginal threat if they still exist.

Or we can just follow the GOP plan and bomb all over Syria, killing some ISIS fighters and innocents alike, revving up recruitment for them in a never ending Iraq-like guerrilla war against our permanently stationed troops occupying Syria.

Who’s up for an Iraq War sequel?

Not sane people (non-Repubs that is).

Nirek, unfortunately the majority of residents of all those red states, being mostly Repub voters, base their political views on fear, hate and prejudice. So they are likely applauding this display of panic and Islamophobia by their Republican governors.

Which is why we are so lucky to have Obama as President, he will follow through with our taking in refugees and all these governors may do their best to force the Federal government to provide the basics for the refugees but they can’t do a thing to block them from being settled in their states.

Another unfortunate thing, I can imagine the Repubs organizing protests of bigotry against refugees in all of these states and helping ISIS to cause damage to the U.S. as well as to the world by proving to Muslims worldwide that the West does hate Muslims and that they are justified in attacking the West.

It’s ironic that Republicans voice fear of ISIS supporters coming to the U.S. as refugees, ISIS couldn’t have better collaborators in instilling fear, validating their claims and driving up recruitment than the GOP.

Responsible people are coming out to support Obama but I’m afraid the majority response to something like a terrorist attack defaults to fear and the Repubs are delighting in whipping up fear.

So of course they lie, of course Trump just outright lies and dangerously spreads pro-Isis propaganda that refugees are just being let into the U.S. with no screening at all. The GOP has no principles or ethics that inspire their core supporters, all they have is exploiting fear, hatred, greed and bigotry.

Republican politicians usually describe issues in simplistic, good and evil terms. So how would the political dynamics in the U.S. be described? One party based on the above horrible traits and the other based on equality, fairness and humanity?

GOP = Grotesque Obscenity of a Party.

Hey Kes, very cool.

The last time I think the U.S. denied refugees to enter to country was during WWII when Jewish refugees were refused, a large boat full of refugees even arriving here then being turned back where many of them were murdered after they returned.

You’ve probably noticed this but the GOP is so ISIS-like in their single-minded propaganda, they are all repeating the same word when referring to wanting to block refugees from coming in, “pause”.

“We just want to press the pause button on refugees.”

“We just want a pause in bringing refugees in until blah-blah-blah.”

Just like they want a pause on gun control discussions that are too close or too far from shooting attacks and they want a pause on any immigration legislation until the border is secure.

In other words, they want to block it permanently (they will never acknowledge that their conditions have ever been met).

Cowards, fear mongers, bigots and demagogues…all because they see every issue solely as, “How can we exploit this to get more power?”

Republican politicians have become such maniacal, slimy creatures, it really is disgusting at this point.

Kalima, yes, Putin’s seeming “peacekeeping” in Syria when Assad used the WMDs was very manipulative and calculated to protect Assad and pave the way for them to step in heavily and profit from it.

Hate to say it, though I thought Obama was great to get the WMDs removed without force, turns out it only helped Putin and Assad in the end because they exploit peace and reason like the monsters they are. No question, we’re pretty much back in a Cold War with Russia, especially after the US has formally charged Russia with hacking our election.

It may be that the Brexit debacle has had an impact on him, spurring him on as a leader. Sure hope so, we need for Labour to make a comeback and kick those Tories out of power.

Farage is Trumpian level evil. And UKIP is in complete disarray now. What happens when the dog finally catches the car? It doesn’t know what to do with it. As Brexit continues to damage the UK’s economy, I think UKIP will continue to implode. But will the bigotry increase as the economy weakens? Afraid that could be the case.

I’ve grown them a number of times, haven’t for a while but will definitely grow sunflowers again this next Spring! They are happy plants and I bake up the seeds when I grow them…mmm!

Hey Kalima! Love the NYT list of people Trump has insulted on Twitter! They left out though that the one most insulted is the American public…and Trump himself!

Russia is truly evil under Putin, the happy collaboration with Assad in mass murder of innocent civilians is horrifying. And Trump and Pence praise him!

Glad to see Corbyn is doing a great job in diversifying his shadow cabinet. I’ve been tough on him over Brexit but he deserves props for this.

Sadly, it is the case that nationalism is spreading around the globe, including the UK and with it comes greater racism and hate crimes. Thank goodness Trump has sabotaged himself or it might have been a justified concern on election night if the US would collapse into a racist and sexist dictatorship-like nightmare or not.

Your picture of the day reminds me of how much I love growing sunflowers…and living in the universe!

It’s awful, Kalima. Apparently, a school that collapsed was supposed to have been retrofitted to be earthquake-resistant but wasn’t. I don’t know that Italy has taken earthquake safety very seriously despite the history of earthquakes there. Japan is just the opposite as is CA, blinding yourself to the certainty that a big earthquake will come is just crazy, the earthquakes will come anyway.

Still, so sorry for all those who have been hurt.

Kalima, sure looks similar to what happened in Egypt when an opportunistic military leader used the excuse of popular outraqe to stage a coup and steal power in the name of populism.

A pattern sure seems to be forming in that region, sort of a corruption of the Arab Spring to exploit the resentment of dictators to erase democracy.

Of all the resignations or urged resignations, can any be more cowardly than Farage’s? Johnson clearly only joined Brexit because he thought it would fail while exploiting those supporting it to help him win PM. Cameron of course thought it would fail. Only Farage was a wholly dedicated promoter of Brexit for years, this was what he and his racist party wanted for so long…they finally fool enough voters to get it…then Farage runs for the hills!

He is the most diseased rat swimming away from the Brexit wreck.

Kalima, this is very distressing. The only positive thing that can come of it is that once the nationalists have their day and citizens discover how it threatens their well being…and how they’ve been hugely lied to by nationalists and things won’t be better, the tide will turn against them across the globe.

As of today, Brits, Europeans and even Americans who have their retirement savings in the stock market will lose 5% – 10% of their money overnight…despite UKIP’s lies assuring voters there would only be more money for them if they left the EU.

And they’ve guaranteed there will be a mass exodus of immigrants out of the U.K.

The ignorant and angry are being manipulated by extremists around the world. Good thing Trump has been exposed and will continue to be for the next 4 months. He’s got 70% of voters disliking him and that will grow.

Unfortunately, the U.K. keeps making mistakes the US barely avoids, going austerity after the crash while Obama spent on infrastructure, voting in that Conservative idiot Cameron while we voted in Obama. Now this, being exploited fools for xenophobes wanting power while Trump is going down.

I always thought of the U.K. as being smarter than the US but not anymore.

And what’s insane is that this vote on Brexit only took place because it was a promise Cameron made to Conservatives opposing him in the last election and thinking he needed them to win, he promised the vote. He gambled the UK’s future to win an election. He won the election but lost the gamble and will be pushed out of office and may have blown up his own country’s economy as well as the EU.

Cameron and the Torries have been destroying the UK bit by bit, is it so surprising that they would make such a disastrous gamble just to maintain power?

Cameron has just announced he will step down as PM by October. How stupid does he and the Tories look now? Like kamikazes.
