Biden Takes on Trump: A Call to Integrity and Courage in The Wave of Two Mass Shootings

And in TX, Beto is beating Trump in the polls. Can you imagine if a Dem won TX? Game over!

And BTW, the latest gaffe from Biden today in IA:

BIDEN: “We have this notion that somehow if you’re poor, you cannot do it. Poor kids are just as bright, just as talented, as white kids.”

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2019-08-09/biden-says-poor-kids-are-just-as-smart-as-white-kids-in-iowa

And this is the basket we want to put all of our eggs in to beat Trump? Biden is a self-sabotaging machine…like a 1979 Cadillac. He needs to be traded in for a newer model.

I did think the speech Biden gave was timely and on the money.

At the same time, it was written for him by his speechwriters and he was reading off of teleprompters. When I first saw it, I was thinking this was a very strong approach and a well structured speech…but then I saw him faltering here and there and saying the wrong words repeatedly. For instance:

BIDEN: Most recently, he called an American…a major American center…city…a disgusting rat infected rodent mess. No human being, he said, would choose to live as though…a vibrant, diverse community around Baltimore somehow was less than human.

This section is at the 1:05 mark in the following video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DTKhR2ofOTY

The last sentence in this segment is disjointed and of course, Trump said and the outrage has been over Trump’s use of “infested” not “infected”. Biden’s repeated stumbles while reading this speech disappointed me while driving home his vulnerabilities as a candidate, especially his age.

Am I glad he made this speech? Yes. However, while the sentiment and substance of the speech is truly appreciated, it is important to Dem primary voters to consider that this was a performance. This was not Beto O’Rourke expressing his genuine anger and sadness in an impromptu tv interview or any of the El Paso and Dayton politicians who have been so eloquent, genuine and powerful in their statements.

This was a candidate for the Democratic nomination performing a speech written by others off of teleprompters (saying that Trump was more George Wallace than George Washington was such a contrived, dated and overwritten jab) that was of course positioned to raise his standing in the primary and your very post evidences that to one degree or another, it has worked as planned.

That is part of the problem I have with Biden and this speech, it was political opportunism even if it was also a very appropriate push back against Trump and the white hatred he has whipped up.

In addition to Biden’s faltering during his speech, this demonstrated his reliance on old school political characteristics that voters have become less enthusiastic about. Instead of speaking his own words from his heart, he spoke someone else’s. Instead of expressing his personal outrage, he dramatically performed outrage in a speech written for him (it was very well written though).

I don’t disagree that it worked. As in your post, I saw news coverage lauding his speech (but not one mentioned his repeated tripping over words and phrases). On one hand, it could be just because the substance of the speech was rightfully so supported. On the other hand, it could be voluntary blindness, as unfortunately occurred with Hillary’s candidacy, that people who don’t want to see and accept that age has affected Biden’s acuity.

With Hillary, there was an issue with some voters feeling she wasn’t authentic. She said the right things, she supported the positions most Americans support but the way she communicated that with the public left some feeling that it may have been more performance than genuine.

This is the same problem I think Biden is facing now and will continue to face through the primary and if he becomes the nominee. He has a very well-rehearsed and effective style of presenting a speech with a tone of outrage and defiance. That can be a plus especially with Dem voters furious towards Trump. But for some Dem voters, there is something about it that comes off as less “from the heart” and more performance skills.

Eventually, this type of presentation can wear thin and seeing the latest polls in Iowa, I think there are a number of Dem voters who may agree with this. In a new Monmouth Poll in Iowa, released today, Biden has basically stayed unchanged over the past four months while Warren is up 12%

Poll: Warren gains on Biden in Iowa

Biden continues to lead the Democratic field with 28% support among voters who are likely to attend the Iowa caucuses in February 2020. This is nearly identical to his 27% support level in April. However, Warren is now closing the gap at 19% support, up from 7% four months ago.

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/politics/poll-warren-gains-on-biden-in-iowa/ar-AAFwO9s

And while Biden does lead with 28%, that also means that 72% of Dems in Iowa are not supporting him. There will be Dems that leave the race along the way and with their voters, Warren is more popular as a 2nd choice than Biden so she has even more room to rise than he does.

Biden’s numbers being static and Warren now being only 9% behind him in Iowa and clearly having momentum with over 5 months to go before the Iowa Caucus certainly puts Warren in a viable position.

As you say, Biden is hands down a better alternative to be president than Trump, no question. And as you say, any of the Dem candidates would be.

I just think that when it comes to which candidate would win the nom, be strongest against Trump (and not stumble), best represents the diversity and vibrancy of the Democratic Party and can generate the most enthusiasm, it may prove out not to be the 76 year old white male establishment moderate who has a propensity for stumbling when delivering a speech.

A Racist By Any Other Name Is Still A Racist

I think we’ve learned early on that the Trump lackeys who come out to defend him no matter how heinous his words or actions are as devoid of honesty and principles as their cult leader.

Trump is clearly racist and at the same time, he pushes his racism more aggressively because he recognizes the political power it gives him. Like a political version of drug addiction, he is an addict to racism and needs to keep chasing that high.

It is not a new proposition but I think it would do the 60% of Americans who aren’t actively supporting racism (tolerance of racism, even with lame excuses of, “I support Trump because I like many of his economic policies but oppose his racial statements”, is still racism) to confront and absorb the reality that at least 40% or so of this country is racist to one degree or another.

It’s a bigger swath of the nation that’s infected with racism than we would have imagined a decade ago but the numbers don’t lie.

I’m a California native and while racism is everywhere including in CA, as the Obama Era was approaching, I naively believed we had really evolved as a nation away from the ugliest and most intense racism of the past. CA’s major cities have been so diverse and accustomed to it that it can be deceiving about the true state of the country and racism’s reach.

I spent a lot of time in Louisiana at that period of time and it was a bit of a shock to see such institutionalized and open racism there. A colleague of mine who worked as a political consultant, a white woman, confided in me that she had to sneak around and hide her relationship with her black boyfriend who was also in local politics, or her career would be destroyed, she would never be able to continue lobbying state legislators, which included many racists, if they found out.

I felt like I was stepping back into the past before realizing that this was just the real world that my surroundings in Los Angeles didn’t reflect. We can discover that we’re living in bubbles even if that’s the last thing we want to do.

So I don’t have any hesitation accepting the self-evident truth that around 40% of the nation don’t believe all men (and women) are created equal.

This is why I strongly oppose this misguided meme by establishment/moderate Dems that the thrust of the 2020 campaign should be trying to convert Trump voters into Dem voters.

Racism can’t be “convinced” out of racist people with campaign speeches and ads. It is far more advantageous to rally more principled voters in that 60% to come out to support the Dems and oppose Trump and the GOP.

Here we are, 243 years after declaring the independence of our country (despite instituting slavery into our Constitution), 154 years after the end of the Civil War and some think that in a matter of months we can just talk millions of Americans out of being racist and supporting racists? It is naive and self-defeating.

I think there is a bit of elitism and a shade of racism in that perspective anyway, the idea that what Dems need to value more and see as their only path to victory, gaining the approval of white people who have been supporting an open racist. We actually don’t need them and haven’t won them in recent times anyway. They are the real minority in this country, a strong turnout of the majority of Americans who are equality-minded will be more than enough to defeat Trump and the GOP.

I am all for education, reaching out and campaigning to reduce racism but we live in the present and are nearing an existential election. I think it’s important to understand the difference between people who have used reason to arrive at a political opinion and those driven to opinions by exacerbated fears and mindless hatred.

Simply put, I think that it’s politically constructive to recognize that the racist-supporting Trump voters are plain and simple, our adversaries. They do not support equality, respect or morality. Thinking that we should devote our resources to trying to instill these concepts into such people is an oblivious and losing strategy.

I think we need to stay focused on the goal of taking away power from those aligned with racism by energizing and activating the majority of American voters who oppose racism. First things first, we need to take back power out of their hands THEN we can use that power to try and educate and enlighten people so absorbed by hatefulness as we make strides to repair the damage the racist in the WH has wrought on the nation.

Dead Wrong: Good Guys with Guns do not Stop Mass Shootings

And vice-versa! You inspire through your strength and determination. I knew you would come through this with flying colors.

An old simple quote stayed with me since I was a kid is, “Someone who won’t be beaten, can’t be beaten.”

That’s so you!

Unmasking Jihadi Don: Anatomy of a Terrorist

Kalima, I know, you nailed it! The argument could be made that Trump is far worse than Wallace. How many Americans were murdered by racists that Wallace inspired? I think Trump holds that disgusting record.

Nope, in his teleprompter sleepwalking he trotted out the same tired and worn out distractions of mental illness and video games being to blame instead of guns. Guns can do no harm for corrupt Repubs. They should have been in that Walmart, I don’t think they’d have been moaning about video games as the bullets whizzed by them.

I am impressed that everywhere I looked today, most folks were immediately brushing off the video game and mental illness distractions from Repubs and Trump by saying what you did, that all other countries have both yet only America has all this gun violence and mass shootings with such frequency.

Hmm…what is the one difference in America? Not video games, not mental illness…does it start with a “g” and end with the murder of innocent people?

I saw tonight that Trump’s campaign has pushed over 2,000 Facebook ads hammering on Latinos “invading” America. The blood from El Paso is all over Trump’s hands.

I could be wrong but something feels different right now. The public and Democrats seem genuinely incensed about this happening, about Trump’s hand in it and about the Repubs blocking us from doing anything to stop this. I know how fickle the public is and how quickly they forget things they shouldn’t but at the very least, there may be a perception cemented in many people’s minds that Trump and the Repubs are protecting mass killings and only Dems can do something about this.

I can imagine the Dem candidates really carrying this anger for the people and promising to take action.

Trump cant do that, he knows his base IS made up of mass murdering racists and he can’t turn on them because they’re all he’s got.

So now Trump is in a corner. If he holds another rally and attacks The Squad, immigrants or any of his racist targets, he will be pilloried throughout the media. If he mentions the term “invasion” again, he will be marrying himself closer to mass murder. His people probably figure that he can just wait it out then pick up with his racist attacks in a matter of weeks.

I don’t think it’s going to work out though.

And without his racist hatred, what does he have to campaign on?

We kept thinking Mueller or impeachment would be the downfall of Trump but how could anything be worse than a president acting as a terrorist against his own people and having a hand in the murder of innocent Americans?

» Posted By AdLib On August 5, 2019 @ 9:13 pm

Hey Opie Cat!

Yes, I think it should be apparent to anyone who can see things as they are, that Trump is a straight up terrorist. He’s a sociopath, he has no morality so the prospect of innocent people being killed by what he sees as the best path to re-election isn’t a bug in the system for him, it’s a feature.

He is a murderer in the same way Klansmen and Neo Nazis who whip up their followers into a frenzy of hate then watch them kill others are. They know that what they’re doing can lead others to murder and that doesn’t stop them.

An American president who is a terrorist against a huge swath of Americans. The concept is kind of mind-boggling but so apparent now.

Who will be on Democratic Debate Stage in September? It’s Up to Us…..

I will be relieved to see this field winnowed down, especially the candidates that everyone knows have no prayer of ever winning the primary (sorry Marianne!).

I think all of the traits you describe are good ones in discerning which candiates one would support.

I did notice and am glad you didn’t include ‘Who can beat Trump?” because that’s a distraction from the fact that whoever wins this primary will have Dems behind them and can beat Trump. It’s an argument to vote for a “safe” candidate like Biden and as history has always proven, the “safe” candidate always seems to lose (ask Jeb Bush about that).

As I just discussed in my new post, I do think that one aspect you didn’t mention is very important…charisma. Who can inspire volunteers to work tirelessly and those who may not usually vote, come out in droves to support them.

A candidate could touch many of the bases you laid out, in fact Hillary Clinton touched them all but without the ability to drive enthusiasm, they can run out of gas (though Hillary was also backstabbed by Comey, Russia, Wikileaks, etc. so there were many additional reasons why she didn’t get the Electoral win).

Is the Insistence of Moderate Dems to Win Back Trump Voters…a Racial Thing?

Uh-oh, looks like the news media isn’t buying your “alternate facts” about YouGov polls:

Jake123: If you missed it, this is NOT a poll but a survey. It is done totally on-line from folk who are self-selected and have nothing better to do than spend their lives answering some 150 questions.

Reality, from YouGov’s website:

How does YouGov conduct Public Opinion research?

YouGov conducts its public opinion surveys online using something called Active Sampling for the overwhelming majority of its commercial work, including all nationally and regionally representative research. The emphasis is always on the quality of the sample, rather than the quantity of respondents.

When using Active Sampling, restrictions are put in place to ensure that only the people contacted are allowed to participate. This means that all the respondents who complete YouGov surveys will have been selected by YouGov, from our panel of registered users, and only those who are selected from this panel are allowed to take part in the survey.

So, your claim is (once again) absolutely false.

I don’t understand your compulsion to make up “alternative facts” to dismiss information you simply don’t like. It only makes the info more legit and your protest against it less credible.

With that in mind, I guess I should say, “Thanks!”

The first national primary poll came out today showing Warren to be into a statistical tie for 1st place with Biden.

If we continue to see this or a lead over Biden reflected in subsequent polls, the whole argument for Biden crumbles. If he can’t maintain the facade of having an advantage of electability, he has no raison d’etre.

» Posted By AdLib On August 14, 2019 @ 8:47 am

Here’s a poll just released today that shows that Biden is losing his lead and not gaining voters:

Poll: Warren gains on Biden in Iowa

Biden continues to lead the Democratic field with 28% support among voters who are likely to attend the Iowa caucuses in February 2020. This is nearly identical to his 27% support level in April. However, Warren is now closing the gap at 19% support, up from 7% four months ago.

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/politics/poll-warren-gains-on-biden-in-iowa/ar-AAFwO9s

Numbers don’t lie. As for “numbers guys”…

Five months left, Warren has momentum and Biden doesn’t and she’s only 9% away from him now. Warren is the second choice among more non-Biden voters than Biden (which makes sense when he started as the favorite) so as candidates drop and their voters move, she will benefit more. Her room to grow is big, Biden isn’t showing any right now.

If I was one to bet on a race, I know who I’d put my money on.

» Posted By AdLib On August 8, 2019 @ 12:18 pm

There’s a reason Trump went out of his way to boast during the campaign that he was favored by a majority of “poorly educated voters”. He said, “I love poorly educated voters!”

Of course he does. Of course the GOP does. Of course their campaign to defund education and discourage college educations is a big deal to them.

The more uneducated the voter, the more easily manipulated. It’s not like these mass killers or white supremacist groups are chocked full of scientists and brain surgeons.

I think that whoever the Dem nom is, will win. To beat out the candidates in the top tier, that person will have to be legit. But to give us the best shot at not only winning but winning big, as is important to crush Trump and the GOP for their racism and anti-Americanism, a Progressive like Elizabeth Warren would be ideal IMO.

Hey NoManIsAnIsland! Really glad you’re back!

I think that one big issue is that most people aren’t taught critical thinking in school. So the decision making process for some is based on impulses, ungrounded assumptions, conformity and of course, fear.

Knowing how to make thoughtful decisions is so important in politics and in life as a whole.

Some Dems look at the Repubs who vote against their own interests and shake their heads…then turn around and unknowingly vote against their own interests.

I understand why many support Biden, some Dems are very skilled at critical thinking and this is the candidate that they think would be best. Fair enough.

But I have seen others who have not really thought this through and have simply accepted the meme pushed out by the establishment that the establishment’s candidate is the most viable. Of course they’d promote that proposition, no surprise.

But it isn’t based on truth, it’s based on their self interest. They could gain power and career opportunities if their candidate is in the WH and able to hand out cabinet positions and such.

But is it best for the average American to have a candidate mired in the establishment in power? History proves that it’s not even a good idea to have them as a nominee!

Some Dems insist they want change but they choose to vote for someone beholden to the same big money, corporate interests and political establishments.

The only way real and profound change can reshape this entire, corrupted system of ours, is to run an exciting candidate that gets more voters out so they can win and who has a real, non-establishment vision for how America can be fixed.

The establishment candidates have gotten us to where we are and the alleged anti-establishment Trump is in truth more establishment and more corrupt than any before him.

He has put the lobbyists and execs from corporations in control of all the domestic agencies that are supposed to protect Americans from them. Trump is the embodiment of the corruption that has overtaken our establishment.

We badly need change and a moderate offering small, incremental change isn’t going to deliver that…and may end up being a one-termer disaster that puts a Repub back in power in 2024.

We need a real change agent and my pick for that is Warren but I will remain open to others if they step up.

We have a number of new members here who all get along with everyone else just fine. To be frank, you are the only one I’ve seen who has been in conflict with multiple members and has received responses from multiple members questioning the credibility of his comments.

To get to the heart of this and maybe even resolve this back and forth between us, please understand that even if our exchanges don’t make you feel that way, you are welcome here.

I don’t hold back in disputes but I also believe in everyone’s right to free expression…especially when it comes to people with whom I disagree.

Different sites have different sensibilities and at PlanetPOV, there is a bit of a reverence for facts and the truth. It’s a place where folks are accustomed to seeing opinions presented as such and facts presented as such and qualified. Where issues and debates are genuine and dancing around the truth isn’t engaged in.

In this Trump Era of “alternative facts”, folks here typically provide links to legit sources to back up asserted facts in their comments and their posts as a reflection of their respect for truth and out of respect for the reader, to give them confidence that what they read is indeed true.

FWIW, as long as opinions are represented as such and assertions presented as facts are earnest and backed up, such conflicts shouldn’t arise again.

» Posted By AdLib On August 5, 2019 @ 7:07 pm

Jake, I’m not sure if you want to earnestly discuss or stay on topic with my actual assertions. But because I am an eternal optimist, I will ignore your insults and try once more to directly address your comment.

Your statement that began this thread:

But until any of the other candidates gets strong non-White support, Biden has this in the bag.

My response and the graphs documented that the establishment candidate with the highest name recognition usually starts off with a strong majority of white and non-white support but naturally loses that big advantage as the primary progresses. So it is not an “if” or “until”, it will happen as history demonstrates.

No Dem candidate in recent history has ever “had it in the bag” just because they were leading in the non-white vote at the beginning stages of the primary. It just isn’t a thing.

No mention was ever made of whether a candidate leading early wins or loses, just that their initial lead is temporary and isn’t a legit basis for predicting the eventual winner.

I am not saying that anyone is “wrong” for wishing and hoping that Joe Biden or another candidate wins the nomination, I’m wishing and hoping that a Progressive wins instead. Everyone should be entitled to their opinion on which candidate they favor. FWIW, I would vote for Biden without hesitation if he won the nom.

You seem to be supporting and promoting Biden which is absolutely fine and if you present aspirations or assumptions about him as such, no issue. However, if an absolutist statement of fact is made to support him that history proves is unfounded, it is likely to be identified as such.

As the list of losing Dem nominees for the last 35 years illustrates, establishment Dems don’t learn, don’t want to learn from the past. They solely want to keep the status quo and feather their own beds by trying to get one of their own in the WH.

There is no question that the future of the Dem Party isn’t in elderly white men who have been long time members of the party establishment. The very reason AZ and TX may be in play in 2020 is because of the growth of minority voters, they are the future.

Repubs own the old white men constituency…that is dying out. Dems need a candidate that reflects the diversity in the country and brings hope for a new and better way than going back to the past.

» Posted By AdLib On August 5, 2019 @ 5:35 pm

Hey NoManIsAnIsland!

The irony is that I think many of the Dem voters who are pressing for a moderate to be the Dem nom are doing so because they think it’s the safest choice when historically, it has been a path to defeat.

It might seem intuitive that by running the least controversial Dem, there would be less for Trump and the Repubs to attack but they will attack anyway and accuse even the most conservative Dem of being a socialist who wants open borders and Latinos stealing the jobs of white men and ending capitalism.

So at least, if the Dem candidate is going to be lied about by Repubs, at least let it be a Progressive who can inspire a greater turnout from voters already predisposed to ignore the Repub lies and vote Dem.

Also, there are moderate Dem voters who just want a moderate candidate who only offers incremental changes and will keep the status quo. Change is scary for some, it takes a leap of faith.

I hope the Progressives like Warren can address those concerns in the primary and win over enough moderate Dems to give us the best shot at winning in 2020 and bringing about the big change we really need.

Remember the list I posted of how journalists determine if someone is being forthright or not?

One item is when a person changes the context of an argument to a different subject to be able to claim that they are proven right.

My assertion and the data in the graphs clearly illustrated that candidates leading by big margins in the polls in the early stages of the primary drastically lose their big leads as the campaign goes on.

To win your own argument with yourself, you constructed a completely different topic that it was “50/50” on who ended up winning.

Even Einstein admitted mistakes, it’s not a sign of anything other than one’s very human nature.

» Posted By AdLib On August 4, 2019 @ 11:26 pm

Aquarius 1027, I like your perspective on this and I would hope that no matter who the Dem candidate is, she/he will benefit from the kind of party unity you describe.

I’m approaching this though without factoring that part in, as a purely strategic exercise. I do think that turnout for Dems will be big as it was in 2018 and that should be enough to push any Dem candidate over the top.

But we have to subtract from that, the Russia meddling, Trump meddling and Repub voter suppression and dirty tricks that will undermine the natural Dem advantage in 2020.

So putting all of that aside as all of it balancing out each other, the question I’m trying to answer is, what type of Dem candidate would be the most likely to pile up the most possible votes?

By analyzing the Dem candidates who have succeeded and failed in recent times, over the past 35 years, there does seem to be a profile for which type loses and which type wins. My concern is that Biden’s type of candidate has lost every time in that entire time frame.

So playing it safer, I would like to see Dems pick an “outsider”, that is, not an establishment Dem moderate. If they are a moderate but still a fresh face that can excite voters, I would be okay with that too.

As for who can do the job as President, I think President Obama proved that a smart, principled and organized person can be very successful in the office even without executive experience.

And Trump has proven that even a moron who’s a criminal and a racist can figure out how to use the power of the office. Which is why we have to throw him out in 2020.

» Posted By AdLib On August 4, 2019 @ 8:00 pm

So nice to see you too, NoManIsAnIsland! Hope all has been well with you!

The Goldwater quote really is a dichotomy. The first part of the quote is off the rails but the last part of it is pretty insightful. Extremism is indeed a vice because it can always be justified by the extremist as noble…as the mass killers this weekend no doubt did. However, as Pelosi has been sitting on her hands when it comes to impeachment and emboldening Trump’s destruction of our society and institutions, it proves that moderation is also no virtue when it comes to justice.

I agree with you, moderate proposals are always the easiest to pass in Congress because you often need the lowest common denominator to get a bill passed.

Elections are different though, especially for Democrats. Voters want and expect the party out of power to be offering something strong, even brash, to accomplish what the current administration has failed to do. They want to be inspired, they want change (in every election or incumbents would be always-reigning kings) and they want vision. They want compassion too, a candidate they respect and can look up to for their principles.

Inspiration gets apathetic Dem voters into the voting booths. A candidate who runs on returning the country to where it was with the president before, incremental changes to existing policies, who is another in a long string of establishment, moderate, older white males who have done the same dance time and time again, is not going to provide that kind of inspiration.

What I think is important is understanding that what Dem voters want in a candidate and what policies can actually be passed are two different things. We should be focused on the candidate with the best potential to both win and once they have, fight to pull bills over as much as possible to helping Americans.

What will be a sure one-termer Dem is someone who comes in as a moderate and negotiates and agrees to compromise greatly with Republicans (to stay moderate) on bills addressing urgent issues Americans face. Such a Dem President would fail and discourage Dem voters and their loss the following election will be inevitable.

The more passionately Progressive a candidate is, the more chance I think they have to beat Trump and the farther away from the right and right center they’ll pull policy.
