I’ve been uncomfortable with some aspects of this situation myself and you mentioned in your assessment some of the reasons why I felt as such. I truly appreciated how you well you articulated it all though, because I was having trouble putting it all together in my own head, until I read this comment. » Posted By Abbyrose86 On May 3, 2011 @ 1:39 pm Exactly….so many like to ignore that fact. » Posted By Abbyrose86 On May 2, 2011 @ 10:15 am As always Choice lady, you are the voice of reason. Btw….I am 90% sure I’m going to run for office….I’m a little scared about fund raising and setting up the PAC, but I think I AM going to do it….I met with the committee chairman today. » Posted By Abbyrose86 On May 1, 2011 @ 8:59 pm Hi Sally! SO you truly ARE a real American!!! π Excellent point about all the different types of Americans….I couldn’t agree more. » Posted By Abbyrose86 On May 1, 2011 @ 7:59 pm No kidding…THAT food thing can REALLY unite people! π » Posted By Abbyrose86 On April 29, 2011 @ 9:05 pm Kesmarn, where I am from, we too have all those festivals…the FOOD at all of them is awesome!!! I truly enjoy the various ethnic fests and learning about different cultures. I think it is a good thing. π » Posted By Abbyrose86 On April 29, 2011 @ 9:04 pm Thank you Kilgore, your last comment summed up my rather lengthy article, quite well! » Posted By Abbyrose86 On April 29, 2011 @ 8:54 pm Adonai, I did take your comment as being in jest and somewhat sarcastic and ironic. As such, I truly do appreciate your sense of humor…you often make me laugh! » Posted By Abbyrose86 On April 29, 2011 @ 8:52 pm Thank you WTS! π » Posted By Abbyrose86 On April 29, 2011 @ 8:48 pm Thank you Choice Lady for adding all that to the article! That was fabulous! My point in writing this was to bring about a dialogue about the myths that permeate our culture as well as the truths about our nations history and all the different cultures that encompass this nation. WE are not only a Christian Protestant nation of WHITE European heritage. WE are a very diverse culture with many components and it’s high time we started to ACCEPT and acknowledge our differences in a positive way, rather than denigrate others who are not just like ourselves. I think IF we manage to do that and REALLY come together, we might actually be able to save ourselves. » Posted By Abbyrose86 On April 29, 2011 @ 3:06 pm That is a terrific question Caru, and I too, have wondered the same. In my studies that question has arisen as well, and with many definitions. That is an interesting comment in the grievances, I didn’t realize such a statement was contained within the document. Perhaps I had read it once and didn’t truly think of the significance of that comment. I think I need to think about that one. » Posted By Abbyrose86 On April 29, 2011 @ 3:01 pm I couldn’t agree more Agrippa on all counts. » Posted By Abbyrose86 On April 29, 2011 @ 2:56 pm No, I don’t think you are alone in that sentiment HH! » Posted By Abbyrose86 On April 29, 2011 @ 2:54 pm I must admit, that I too, often look at the United States as the teenager of the world. And I tend to agree, I think most people outside of the US, don’t think highly of the Americans they meet. It is unfortunate. » Posted By Abbyrose86 On April 29, 2011 @ 2:54 pm I know what you mean PW…I could go on and on about all the different myths that have perpetrated within our culture to create the story of America. In addition to all the historical situations that have led to our current place. Unfortunately, there is not the room! I appreciate the additional information you provided, some of the information you provided was the inspiration for this piece. π » Posted By Abbyrose86 On April 29, 2011 @ 2:52 pm Thanks for the links Bito. It’s truly amazing isn’t it, how some people just will NOT accept that the American culture is a MIXTURE of various ethnic groups, as well as socioeconomic groups? The lack of REAL understanding of the wide swath of cultural influences that have made up the American culture, and the desire to squash the learning of all the different ethnic influences upon our American society, is rather disturbing. » Posted By Abbyrose86 On April 29, 2011 @ 2:49 pm Oh Adonai…you certainly are bringing your A game today!!! I LOVED your questions…and answers. » Posted By Abbyrose86 On April 29, 2011 @ 2:44 pm Giving Corporations the Death Penalty Amen Adlib…AMEN! I cannot add to what you said so well… π BUT you got it! » Posted By Abbyrose86 On April 26, 2011 @ 6:02 pm I couldn’t agree more Adlib. I’m a businesswoman….however, call me old fashioned but I believe in GOOD business practices, those that consider long term viability of the business with good corporate responsibility, and being GOOD corporate citizens…I do not accept or hold the principle that business’ have only one responsibility, that to their shareholders. I do not buy into that concept. I am a firm believer that BUSINESS EXISTS TO BENEFIT MANKIND, Mankind DOES NOT exist to benefit business. Somewhere along the lines the IDEALS of what a business is supposed to be have been bastardized by those who have an unethical agenda. » Posted By Abbyrose86 On April 26, 2011 @ 4:54 pm Bravo Ad Lib…THEY (corporations) shouldn’t be ABLE to have it both ways…either they are RESPONSIBLE citizens who ENJOY all the benefits of personhood and THUS ALL The consequences that go with it…or they aren’t. PERIOD. SO Yes, it shouldn’t just be a tongue and cheek proposal…as THEY should NOT be allowed to have it both ways. The legal concept of a Corporation is to limit personal responsibility of the owners for actions of the business…HOWEVER if they the owners of corporations and their overseers are going to argue THAT they should have the ALL the privileges of personhood than it SHOULD follow they should have the same responsibilities and consequences…otherwise their paper standing does not stand. » Posted By Abbyrose86 On April 26, 2011 @ 11:56 am Yes, I’m going to to do it…it’s a little scary I must admit…but it will be a new experience! Thank you Kilgore! π » Posted By Abbyrose86 On May 3, 2011 @ 6:35 pm Kilgore, I think you made a great distinction there….Great points! » Posted By Abbyrose86 On May 3, 2011 @ 6:04 pm Definitely check out Wicked….I think YOU will really like the book, As I said, I can see that argument you put forth regarding OBL, as being very valid, totally. Average citizens Should be kept of of harms way in these things.. As to the lying I agree completely! » Posted By Abbyrose86 On May 3, 2011 @ 4:57 pm Thought provoking, and by the way your timing was good. Evil and morality for that matter, does depend on perspective, in my opinion. Perspective is an interesting concept that sadly too often ignored in all debates….two people with very opposing ideas can both be right and both be wrong, all depending on how you look at the situation. Evil is a hard thing to quantify or to define, describe…especially when you bring perspective into the equation. I’m not sure anymore what I think… For example, in the your opinion portion, you bring up the subject of theft; I used to believe stealing almost always bad, and unless one was stealing because they were starving, that there was little justification for the act….I don’t believe that anymore. I’m not saying people should just willing nilly go around stealing from one another…but the subject of stealing has many shades of gray as to what IS stealing and WHAT is morally reprehensible. For example, stealing the last dollar from a poor person in my mind is MUCH more evil, than stealing $10,000 from a very rich one. Lying is another moral dilemma….some lying is never forgivable or acceptable and other lying, can be ok. If one lies to protect the safety or well being of someone…is that so bad? However, if one lies to HURT another or to cause damage to another that’s not so good. Now the Bin Laden thing for me, is more difficult to quantify with an absolute, than is say Hitler. I read Mein Kampf, and I’ve studied the history of Hitler and WW2 at length, as such I feel pretty comfortable that the actions of the Nazi’s were indeed very evil. Yet, with Bin Laden, I’m not as sure as to his evilness. He may have been misguided, or very nutty, or eccentric,or even maybe evil I don’t know for sure. And to be honest with you, I’m not sure why I have difficulty with the narrative of him. I do think and believe he probably WAS a threat to the US way of things. Of that I’m confident, I’m not so sure he really is the picture of evil. Maybe I’ve read too many Robert Ludlum and Gore Vidal novels or maybe due to my study of US history, and how over the years the government and big business has done a very effective job of using good propaganda, especially when former ‘good guys or friends of the US government’ have been painted as EVIL AFTER they no longer do the bidding of the US. BTW, I didn’t buy into the Saddam thing as evil incarnate either. Not that Saddam was a good guy, by no means, but I don’t think he was any more ‘evil’ than most other leaders in the world or even some of our own, say…George W. Bush or Ronald Reagan. I think he was on par with them. And maybe that is my feeling about OBL, too. I’m not sure…something just seems off to me. I remember an old saying…’one man’s terrorist…is another man’s freedom fighter’. Different sides of the same coin. People hate when I say this..but TECHNICALLY, the founding fathers of the US, were TRAITORS to their government and TECHNICALLY could be considered terrorists by the Crown of England of the time. Historically, the founders AT THE TIME, were not all considered good guys by THEIR opponents. I love the book, “Wicked” and that story has been going through my head a lot the last couple of days….NOW maybe, that is because I’m going to see the play on Friday, but I think it also is because quite a few people have used the ‘Ding Dong the witch is dead’ scene from the ‘Wizard of OZ” since Sunday night. Have you read “Wicked” or seen the play? The story is about the Wicked Witch of the West, but told from HER perspective….and HER perspective WAS quite different than the story told in the original tale. In “Wicked” the witch isn’t really the bad character, the bad guys are the Wizard himself and Glenda, the good witch. The book actually brings a lot of politics into the mix, and shows how effectively a good propaganda campaign CAN work. Dorothy is just an innocent bystander who is manipulated by Glenda and others, she doesn’t know to question what they told her, and so she believes them without real evidence to substantiate what they told her to be true. Anyway, if you haven’t read it, you should…it’s an interesting exercise in perspective. You provided much food for thought Adonai…again! Good job. » Posted By Abbyrose86 On May 3, 2011 @ 1:24 pm The View From the Left Hemisphere of the Universe Fabulous read WTS! Very thought provoking. Man seems to have a propensity for arrogance. This arrogance of MAN leads MAN to believe he has the ability to understand and explain EVERYTHING…even though HE does NOT possess omniscience! This mind set has gotten us in trouble often throughout our known history. YET we continue to believe that ‘man’ has the ability to BECOME all knowing and can find an explanation FOR everything…even though…quite honestly, WE DON’T KNOW WHAT WE DON’T KNOW!!! WE, human beings need to realize, we ARE NOT all knowing and never WILL be…no matter HOW our arrogance assumes that we are. For every NEW thing we learn there are different things and consequences that come from that learning. One thing I have learned from life is…that you really don’t KNOW something until AFTER you have actually experienced it. I’ve also learned that just because YOU CAN do something…doesn’t MEAN you should. NOW with that statement being made, I’m not saying one should NOT take risks or try different things…but rather that potential outcomes SHOULD be thought of BEFORE acting. Now of course, that can still lead to unpleasant outcomes for nature or man or another entity…however, the THOUGHT of potential negatives and positives of an action SHOULD be considered BEFORE one simply acts WITHOUT thought to the ramifications. Sadly, man has forgotten to THINK before he acts or speaks, especially IF money is a consideration. {SIGH} WE are such an arrogant selfish species. {SIGH} » Posted By Abbyrose86 On April 24, 2011 @ 1:07 am Cher, this was a very interesting compilation. I think you maybe on to something. Perhaps instead of just looking at papers from large markets though, I suggest you take more of a regional approach…maybe one that takes into account that in certain REGIONS of the country, rather than by State, certain social and cultural themes dominate. I suggest this approach rather than by State, or population because certain regions tend to be more alike than the state they are in would indicate. For example…NYC and Philly, and parts of New Jersey tend to all have a similar cultural identity. Whereas, Upstate NY and Western NY are quite different. A similar concept occurs with the New England States of Connecticut, Mass, and Rhode Island, vs Maine, Vermont and New Hampshire. Similarly Southwestern regions may differ culturally than certain western or southern regions. You get the idea…so by looking at a sampling of a small, medium and a large market paper from each particular region, I think you might get a better view of the concepts, ideas and interests of a wider range of the people in the nation. Just a thought! π » Posted By Abbyrose86 On April 23, 2011 @ 7:49 am Cher, I do think there has been some improvement by some on the left. Thankfully! I still think we have a way to go to really start getting the message out simply. I thought Obama did a good job with his last speech, by putting forth the ideals of the left, and the morality of the message in a simple and concise manner, but I think we still need to come up with some bumper sticker like catchy phrases and make THEM go viral. For the most part, I don’t think the masters of the rightwing have really mastered the internet. I mean, they have their paid bloggers and right wing websites, which do somewhat work with their base, but they haven’t taken control of the net or it’s capabilities yet, nor have they had much success with the younger generations who are ON LINE and who use twitter, faceback, text, etc….I think that is where the left may have an advantage on the messaging thing, the use of social media and the young. » Posted By Abbyrose86 On April 21, 2011 @ 10:47 am I’ve been off my soapbox for a few weeks now! I need to get back on! π » Posted By Abbyrose86 On April 21, 2011 @ 10:42 amComments Posted By Abbyrose86
I used to be pretty absolute in my own moral code, but somewhere along the lines, I started to change.
