Let’s just start with the case itself. Why? The federal government getting involved seemed absolutely silly to me. Steroids aren’t evil. More than a few physicians have taken offense at the demonization of steroids. Yes, they are illegal to take without a doctor’s order but it’s hardly cocaine. And steroids indeed add muscle mass you couldn’t get ordinarily but that doesn’t translate into hitting a baseball. You may hit it further, which isn’t guaranteed, but you still have to hit it. Steroids do not improve your motor skills or your hand eye coordination. Also, distance is all about bat speed. Not muscle mass. And just because you are bigger than someone else does not mean you will get your bat through the zone quicker than them. It’s all about stance and hand movement. But, steroids will definitely help you heal faster and add years to your career. It will improve your runnig speed as well with additional muscle(provided you don’t add too much mass). Which Bonds obviously did. You shouldn’t EVER lie to the government so he deserves to be busted for that, but everything else just seems like nonsense. And we still have the ridiculous Clemens case to go as well. And sure, steroids and “greenies” are different, but those pills still added an unbalanced advantage. AND were also illegal by the 80’s like steroids. And Babe Ruth did indeed do it on beer and hot dogs. He also did it without black and Latino players. Babe Ruth hit 715 homeruns? That’s great. Josh Gibson hit 800. Who’s Josh Gibson? The best baseball player of all time. But he never made it out of the negro league along with some of the finest baseball players of all time. And where is MLB in all of this? If you are sure Bud Selig and his flunkies had NO IDEA this was happening, then how was he not fired for total incompetence? MLB is the real villain here. Maybe their methods are dubious, but, like the Republicans, I’d cut a big chunk of the government away too. As far as the “debate” on the budget deficit and our debt, private and public, neither side is telling the truth. Neither side is as forthcoming as they need to be. I’ve listened to the economic policy of the Right AND the Left for a long time now and, in my opinion, both sides offer a slow bleed policy. Maybe Democrats will go further to help people, but they won’t go all the way because they need those people’s votes too. Not a lot of people are going to vote to raise their taxes. They are dye in the wool Republicans, don’t get me wrong, they would never change Partys. Some of them do have deep philosophical disagreements with their Party. Like me, they see a bunch of potentially great ideas on the Republican side, but no leadership to carry them forward effectively. They all long for the good Reagan. The Reagan who raised taxes on the rich, improved schools, put millions back to work before being taken over by the neo-cons who all but bought his election. To be fair though, Reagan didn’t put up much of a fuss about it. And there are the ones who believe Obama is a socialist, proxy-Muslim and that the Great Depression was solved by ending banking regulation and cutting taxes on the rich. Seriously. I’ve actually had that argument. But I don’t mind. It’s like my Democrat friends. I have level headed friends who feel Obama is trying his best but he is a politician at the end of the day. We all knew that. And Democratic friends who believe Obama is a corporate stooge who is actually working with the Republicans and that the Republican Party gave birth to the corporate machine when we all know it was the Democratic Party many many decades ago. They ALL feel the shutdown is a bad idea though. Politically and for many many Americans. Including them. But, of course, they still argue the fault.
