Shovel-ready in a Sagging Economy

A five week paid vacation? You’re fucking kidding me. After everything that just happened, they’re taking a month off with pay?

It wouldn’t make me as mad if it weren’t for the fact that THEY decide what they’re paid and THEY decide how long and often they can vacation. They’re OUR employees. A five fucking week vacation while people are still losing their jobs, their pensions, their sanity. This isn’t right.

Anyways,

1.)I’m glad the President is still pushing infrastructure overhaul. Now that the debt ceiling farce is over with maybe he can get people’s attention. Don’t trust the Army Corp of Engineers though. They built the levees in Louisiana. They admitted the KNEW the levees were flawed and degraded, and in the immediate aftermath they tried to deflect blame. It’s all about contractors and profits.

Before we begin any real work on our country we really have to straighten out the people we plan to put in charge of it. Public and private contractors and engineers. If we don’t we will be wasting tons of money to buy half-ass service in the name of profit. I hope Obama understands that.

2.)Same problem here. Throw all the money you want at the FAA. Not a lot of problems are gonna be solved. The problem is really the airlines though. These companies waste money and wait to be bailed out because what are we gonna do, not have airlines? They got us and the government by the balls. The FAA barely regulates them and the fines are a joke. And the FAA KNOWS it. But what are they gonna do?

Do we want a new America or do we just wanna slap on a coat of paint and walk away? These are good ideas. You’re absolutely right that they need to be addressed. But just throwing money at it has never worked. I wanna give people jobs but jobs doing something that’s gonna matter. Not working for someone bilking us for as much money as possible while doing the absolute least they could do.

Still, good post. 10/10. This stuff NEEDS to be done and done right.

The Daily Planet, Vol. 127

1.)“In the future, any president, this one or another one, when they request us to raise the debt ceiling, it will not be clean anymore. This is just the first step.”

– Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), in an interview with Larry Kudlow, suggesting fights over the debt ceiling are the new normal.

We ALL know this is bullshit. If Obama were a Republican, the debt ceiling would have been raised first thing last December. I hate McConnell so much. The fact he represents me makes me so angry.

2.)If we keep giving away these spending cuts without raising taxes we’re fucked.

3.)I get what Ezra Klein is saying but if support quickly fades from this bill then it has every chance of turning into something terrible. And he still wants more spending cuts if I;m reading him correctly. We don’t need that. We need more tax revenue. That we can agree on.

4.)Do you think people on FOX News watch the Daily Show? Not all of them but maybe a some of them? And if they do, when eh runs those montages of them looking like hypocritical assholes, do they ever feel ashamed to be working where they work? Me neither but I thought I’d throw that out there.

5.)The Dead Zone in the Gulf has been there for awhile. Long before the oil spill. Scientists are still trying to figure it out. Cause, like they said, it’s expanding. And a giant oil spill sure doesn’t help. I saw some footage of the ocean floor in the center of it and it’s eerie. There is nothing alive anywhere. Just miles of dirt, rocks, and no fish or plants.

6.)I may be wrong but wouldn’t getting rid of the Bush tax cuts have been an even bigger boos tot our economy than the temporary unbalanced extensions we got from it? Rich still getting richer. Poor still getting poorer.

7.)To build may have to be the slow and laborious task of years. To destroy can be the thoughtless act of a single day.
~Winston Churchill

The Daily Planet, Vol. 126

I get that the Republicans didn’t want the debt ceiling deal then but they REALLY wanted those tax cut extensions.

How can they say it wouldn’t have worked if they didn’t even try it? They could have done to them what they just did to us. Force their hand. I think Obama did well too. I just also think Democrats didn’t push hard enough.

1.)The best option I heard for Obama was put forth by a reporter to Obama on a clip from the Daily Show last night. Why couldn’t we have attached the debt ceiling raise to a past bill that Republicans really wanted? They kinda did that to Democrats. And whose to say it won’t happen again? And worse. Why couldn’t we have attached the debt ceiling raise to the Bush tax cuts extension? The reporter pointed out to Obama that Republicans seem to have leverage over the White House now. And he asked Obama what happens when they do this again. I didn’t like Obama’s answer. “My expectations are that Republicans won’t watch the economy collapse.”….. Look, Mr. President, you took a shitty deal and did better with it than I ever expected. But they will not just let this go. You got to know it’s gonna come back around. They’re awful people.

2.)Mrs. Giffords is my hero.

3.)A hallucination is a fact, not an error; what is erroneous is a judgment based upon it.
~Bertrand Russell

The Deal That Says “Splunge!”

I took the splunge this time around as well and almost drowned.

Bullshit does not create great buoyancy.

jkk, I think some people take disagreements far, FAR too personally. Let’s step away from the realm of opinion for a moment.

If you’re arguing with someone about something you already know is absolute fact, do you become aggravated or possibly even angry about their refusal to accept what appears to be the obvious truth?

Lord knows I do. But then I realize that it doesn’t really matter. It’s enough that I know the truth and stand by it. It’s not my duty to guide them to the truth. Lasting ideals are the ones we think we came to on our own. The truth can be disguised, buried, and distorted, but never destroyed. It persists and we will all see it eventually.

Indeed KT. well put. 🙂

“Laws do not exist to bind you but to let you know how free you are.” It’s an old Japanese proverb.

It basically means laws do not exist to restrict you but to allow you to live as one in peace.

Life is brutal. In society or outside it. The only difference is how many choices you actually have. And it really is a vague philosophical thing. Trust me, I enjoy society. It allows me to indulge my excesses.

» Posted By ADONAI On August 2, 2011 @ 2:33 pm

Yeah that’s what I mean. Respect for their right to exist and have a stupid opinion.

» Posted By ADONAI On August 2, 2011 @ 2:25 pm

I’m not talking about control over life and death so much as the little things.

If I can’t do something without facing someone else’s arbitrary punishment, I do not have full control over my existence.

And that’s really at the heart of the Social Contract. Whether we willingly turn it over or not, we do give a bit of ourselves to thwe whole.

I won’t get into whether it’s a moral thing or not, it’s just how it is. Long before any of us were ever born.

Not being able to do as we choose is the very definition of a lack of freedom. We use the abridged version of freedom in society. That old saying:

“Laws do not exist to bind you but to let you know how free you are.” That doesn’t make any sense. Freedom doesn’t have levels. Anything less than absolute freedom is not really freedom, and no amount of books on the subject will change that.

» Posted By ADONAI On August 2, 2011 @ 2:11 pm

Indeed wts. Well said.

» Posted By ADONAI On August 2, 2011 @ 2:00 pm

You hate them, yes? I do too. But I respect their right to exist. I respect their right to carry their own asinine opinion around.

Respect does not equal like.

» Posted By ADONAI On August 2, 2011 @ 1:59 pm

You can’t do whatever you want whenever you want without question or consequence in a society. You do not have full ownership of your own existence. You are bound by laws and regulations that we all agree to follow. We exchange a certain amount of freedom for protection and comfort.

Well, that is where most of these hippie liberals wind up being from.

Now, before anyone gets offended, I can use the word hippie because I’m a quarter hippie on my mom’s side.

But these are the kinds of things I expect from this country. One of my favorite Democrats of all time is Jimmy Carter. The man was a mediocre President. Not that he wasn’t good at the job, it just wasn’t the job for him. He was meant to do something more than run a fucking daycare center for 4 or 8 years.

Obama is a man made to be President. Again, not that Mr. Carter wasn’t a fine representative of this country. It just wasn’t the right place for him to be. And I think he knows that. Even Clinton is now realizing he can do more for more people out of office than he ever could in it. And he made A LOT of people rich and happy while he was in office.

But I’m getting sidetracked. President Carter sat down and talked directly to Americans like they were adults. His first mistake. One Obama has made a few times. You can’ talk to people anymore without them getting offended. You can’t talk directly to someone like they were a functioning adult. Maybe Mr. Carlin was right and we have raised a generation of pussies. Who knows?

But we can’t ever seem to cut to the heart of an issue because too many people instantly become offended and then the whole focus is shifted to the goddamn “controversy”. People just can’t believe someone would speak to them as though they had free will and an independent mind. we have to be talked down to. Given everything in little soundbites, often times completely out of context with the issue being discussed.

It is, more than anything, a machine to manufacture fake outrage. It really is that simple. People NEED it. They crave the outrage. Need to see someone punished for speaking the harsh truth.

I can’t believe Mrs. Giffords is even alive let alone returning to work. And he thinks this vote is the start of her “comeback trail”? It’s her job dude. What a douche.

The far Left and the far Right have their own agendas. They have their minds already made up and nothign that is done or said will change it. And I’ll let Chris Rock finish it for me:

“Anyone who makes up their mind before they hear the issue is a fucking fool! Everybody is so busy wanting to be down with a gang! I’m a conservative! I’m a liberal! I’m a conservative! It’s bullshit!

Be a fucking person. Listen. Let it swirl around your head. Then form your opinion.”

~Chris Rock

Put down YOUR cross and realize that we are in it for everyone’s benefit. Trust me, it’s VERY easy to be outraged. Everyone loves feeling better than someone else. And so you pounce on any little word or phrase that you could possibly twist into a platform to support your one sided, prejudiced ideas.

And now that I, the pot, have called the kettle black, I will end by saying give the man his fair shake. You’re disappointed in him? He’s the one who should be disappointed.

My Dinner with the National Debt

I bet the debt didn’t even leave a tip.

Love the premise and the setup. Of course the debt is gonna meet you at a swanky restaurant. It’s debt!

Do You Want to Live Forever?

Would you still marry for life if life had no end?

Would having children become a redundant activity since your bloodline no longer has a shelf life?

jkk, There is a system I have in mind and it’s exact name escapes me at the moment. It contains a star very much like our own and many astronomers believe there is a planet circling it a lot like Earth.

I wanna be on the first mission going to check it out! Not just the possibility of discovering another planet but another Earth!

Will there be complex organisms? Maybe intelligent ones? It’s just too good to pass up!
