Almost half the Dems in the House voted for it. A majority in the Senate approved it. I remember empty chambers. No debates. I did acknowledge the thousands who poured out to protest. Didn’t matter. Yes every network on TV was selling war but the American people were ready for it. Many commentators and social critics spoke out harshly against it. But they were just drowned out by the drumbeat to war. And Democrats have had chances to end this. Several bills to extend funding passed almost unanimously. We love war. A vocal minority spoke up on the wrongs of invading this country. I listened. I believed them. I thought that surely the American people wouldn’t go for this. So when I first ventured into politics it was with a cynical point of view. It was the first major event of my adult life. My introduction to “how things work”. It still influences every aspect of my political thoughts today. Robert Byrd gave a speech to an empty room. No one bothered to show up. No one had one bad thing to say about invading Iraq except him. I just look back and think, “What the fuck happened? What were we thinking? What is the deal with Arabs/Muslims and poetry? I saw a story on this huge poetry competition they have in the UAE. Kinda like American Idol but for poets. And I could believe Khadija transcribing the Koran for him. She was his best friend and go to on just about everything. I was really surprised at how much Muhammad DID NOT want to be the next prophet. I mean, most prophets had been hesitant at first but even after he began dictating the Koran he was somewhat ambivalent about founding a religion. I don’t blame him. It’s like Persia learned all this stuff from the West to go along with what they were already teaching, then, when the Dark Ages hit and Europe went under, they continued it all and improved it. The Renaissance and Enlightenment are full of ideas and philosophies cribbed from Persian scientists. Modern theories on biology, energy, and evolution can be traced back to an Asian scholar, most often Persian. I found it particularly telling when Muhammad refused to pass sentence on the Jewish tribe he had captured. He let one of their own decide. ‘Cause you can go a few ways on it. Yo could say he copped out. You could say that maybe he knew that teh torah sentenced death and enslavement on prisoners so he was cool with it. Don’t think I leave the voters without blame. I don’t want to give that impression, which I may well have. If Progressives want more Progressive candidates they have to fight for them. I think that is where I come halfway. You can’t wait for the candidates to come all the way to you. You have to meet them there and go with them. Give yourself something to vote for. But I do still have problems with the way both Parties National Committees run their ships. I’m sure I’m not alone. And you’re right. And if those voters don;t share your view of the “big picture”? Are they fools? Detriments to the republic? And how can anyone be sure that record turnouts will go their way? Voting is not a magical cure all. Getting huge numbers of voters out to the polls doesn’t mean you are gonna get what you want. He got 58% of the vote. And you’re blaming non voters? Were they ALL gonna vote against him? I don’t want to get back in to the whole ‘voting versus not voting’ deal, but you can’t assume every missed vote would have went your way. Maybe he would have won by a greater margin.
