Well, ladies and gentlemen we’re not here to indulge in fantasy but in political and economic reality. America, America has become a second-rate power. Its trade deficit and its fiscal deficit are at nightmare proportions. Now, in the days of the free market when our country was a top industrial power, there was accountability to the stockholder. The Carnegies, the Mellons, the men that built this great industrial empire, made sure of it because it was their money at stake. Today, management has no stake in the company! All together, these men sitting up here own less than three percent of the company. And where does Mr. Cromwell put his million-dollar salary? Not in Teldar stock; he owns less than one percent. You own the company. That’s right, you, the stockholder. And you are all being royally screwed over by these, these bureaucrats, with their luncheons, their hunting and fishing trips, their corporate jets and golden parachutes. Teldar Paper, Mr. Cromwell, Teldar Paper has 33 different vice presidents each earning over 200 thousand dollars a year. Now, I have spent the last two months analyzing what all these guys do, and I still can’t figure it out. One thing I do know is that our paper company lost 110 million dollars last year, and I’ll bet that half of that was spent in all the paperwork going back and forth between all these vice presidents. The new law of evolution in corporate America seems to be survival of the unfittest. Well, in my book you either do it right or you get eliminated. In the last seven deals that I’ve been involved with, there were 2.5 million stockholders who have made a pretax profit of 12 billion dollars. Thank you. I am not a destroyer of companies. I am a liberator of them! The point is, ladies and gentleman, that greed, for lack of a better word, is good. Greed is right, greed works. But as far as copyright law and royalties, one of two things usually happens: The artist sells their copyright to the studio/label for a hefty sum OR they agree to basically sell the rights away but keep a certain percentage of profit on units sold. They are still paid for production or under whatever standards set by the contract they signed. But, I do feel a bit of guilt when I think about independent artists. Some do go on to do great things when their material is spread across the net. But it also swallows up many others. But it’s hard to look at a billion dollar monolith and feel like the bad guy. Like I’m the one taking food out of their mouths. I know that’s no justification, but still….. I forgot where I was going with that. At the end of the day you’re far more right than I am. The label takes possession of your creation and any future creation. They pay you a sum up front to produce it and then they market it and sell it. If you quit, they own your band name, your library, and everything that you created. Some artists are lucky enough to buy their rights back. Most aren’t. People think copyright means ownership for their property. No. It’s the label’s property. Or the studio’s. So have the labels violated artist’s rights? It’s standard policy in American copyright law for people to wait up to 35 years for their library to pass from a record company to them. It’s all fucked up but trust me. People are getting paid. But I don’t care. How much stuff does a person really own? How much is their “property”? If you create art and present it to the world, is it yours anymore? But for a simple example, let’s take PC cloud software. Now, in he future you won;t really physically own any of your games, movies, or music. You’ll have an entire library that can be wiped out with a keystroke. And companies are taking steps to still assume full control of your “property”. Where you buy it, store it, and play it. Maybe you don’t comply with some silly rule they have. Can’t watch the movie you “own”. Steal from these people. Take as much as you can. They destroy everything for profit. You want diversity and competition and accountability? Steal. Better yet, attend a boycott and steal. There is no such thing as property and soon enough that will be the way the world works. You think the elite own everything now? Just wait. They’ll own that and your ability to comment on how fucked up it is. Steal. Remember VCRs? Well, when people developed blank VCR tapes, the movie industry wanted them banned. Hell, they wanted VCRs taken off the shelves. A few years later they embraced the technology and made billions. Remember Walkmans? Well, when people developed blank cassettes the record companies went ballistic. Actually filed papers in court to have them banned. A few years later they embraced the technology and made billions. Everything is moving to “cloud networks”. It’s all gonna be digital. DVDs and CDs are a dying technology. The interwebs is the future. The sooner they embrace it the sooner they can make it work for them. Copyright laws are nice. I guess. People talk about “robbing artists”. You’re not. Artists have already been paid if that really bothers you. Record companies just want a perpetual cash machine. They’ve changed tactics in this country. They don;t really go after downloaders or individual uploaders anymore. Now they police the sites themselves. Pirate Bay wont survive another lengthy court battle. Many previously free sites are thinking of charging and linking with various entertainment outlets. The entertainment industry will survive and make money from this. But there will always be pirates. There is no technology we can conceive that can’t be cracked. So stop arresting children and start getting with the program. I don’t see Katy Perry or Brad Pitt hurting for money.
