I am pleased to announce that North Carolina has become the first state in our nation to have a major political Party (the Democratic Party) officially recognize a separate Transgender Caucus! It happened first in the South!
What I see is another division being created in our already-marginalized community.
We will likely not get a ruling on Aimee Stephens’s case until at least March 2020. Meanwhile, we transgender sit and wait. And we wonder. And we worry. Will the highest court in the land of the free...finally rule that we are full humans? Or will they relegate us to permanent second-class status?
In 2015, the second US Trans Study was conducted by NCTE and it found, among other things, that nearly 30 percent of transgender respondents reported having at some time been denied care at a doctor's office that would have been rendered if we were not transgender. So we aren't even talking about refusals for transgender-related care, e.g. hormones...we are talking things like diabetes, broken bones, colds, etc.
So...what IS in a name? Our names are probably one of the most fundamental aspects of our identity. We transgender have the opportunity to choose our own names, names that have significance for us...
