In the ramp up to the General Election, it’s a good time to consider what has occurred under President Obama’s first three years and how those actions could be reversed under a Republican. To begin, here’s a trailer from the Obama Campaign’s upcoming documentary, “The Road We’ve Traveled”:
Clearly, President Obama’s biggest accomplishment was preventing the nation from plunging into a new Depression through the passage of the Stimulus Bill and other economic decisions. Passing Universal Health Care was pretty huge as was ending Don’t Ask Don’t Tell and of course, tracking down Osama Bin Laden.
It’s easy to lose perspective on events when one is in the midst of them but the argument could fairly be made that more profound decisions and actions have taken place under President Obama in the short span of three years, despite a viciously polarized Republican opposition, than under any other President in recent memory. And for the most part, those decisions appear to have paid off for the American People.
The propaganda from the GOP and their poor excuses for Presidential candidates proliferates the airwaves and the nation, pushing “facts” such as President Obama is a failure, he’s damaged the economy and jobs, he’s weak on foreign policy, etc. Though many of these falsehoods can instantly be seen as such by those who are informed or just live in reality, it is helpful to refresh one’s memory of what President Obama has accomplished and what there is to protect from being erased if a Republican was to win the Presidency this November.
So, here’s a partial list of President Obama’s accomplishments, a subset of a much larger list of the campaign promises he made when he ran for the Presidency in 2008 and kept, thanks to Politifact (you can read details of each item and see Politifact’s complete nine page list here):

Again, this is just a partial list from the nine pages of President Obama’s actions classified under “Promise Kept” at Politifact. To date, there are also three pages of promises that are classified by them as “Compromise” and others they classify as “Promise Broken”.
The above are just some of what’s on the table to keep or lose this November. As tempting as it is to watch the GOP primary and become confident that Obama’s re-election is a lock, there will be powerful and wealthy forces who will be spending hundreds of millions of dollars to reverse some or much of the above by smearing Obama’s record to elect a Republican to the White House.
For those who support many of the items listed above, it will take a good deal of time and energy this year, invested in the campaign to re-elect President Obama, to protect them and pave the way for further accomplishments like these.
It is painful to imagine what a President Romney’s “Promise Kept” list would look like, motivation indeed for working this year for a better America.
Ad, and what a partial list it is. The complete list grows every day. Not to YELL OUT LOUD about the economy and (the only candidate standing in 2008 who even thought there was a problem) and the improvement in the jobs market—considering that the GOP fired a whole lot of government employees—the numbers would be even better.
And let’s not even talk about foreign policy with the GOP. They can’t catch a break on finding enough backward people to believe in more war
These are all good, but understand that the “Massawesicks” on the Right will do their best to undermine every bit of it. While we may have differences with some of what this — or any — president has done, we need to remain focused.
JMBrodie, great to see you and so true, the GOP Primary may look like a clown show but there are massive amounts of money and nasty game plans waiting in the wings to spring on Obama, not to mention all of the voter suppression laws being passed so we do indeed need to remain focused on doing all that we can to support Obama’s re-election and never take it for granted.
True. I like that Holder and Justice are monitoring this, and reversing in SC, TX, OH and WI, but I fear there are other tactics that could also work to keep the vote down. We need to make sure that everyone we know is set to vote, has all of the proper “Papers” (can’t believe I am using such a phrase in the US).
Hey JM, long time no see. Good to “see,” you again.
Good to see you too, my friend. Been away trying to grow up. Failing badly… 🙂
What have I missed?
Hopefully, I will get back to writing as well — if you will have me…
JM the only “failure” is trying to reason with the HP righties. There are some very good folks over there that I miss. Wish they’d hop over; they would fit in so well.
If they have me, they’ll be tickled with you
Glad to have you JM. Fresh perspectives are what makes the Planet, the Planet.
As to what’s been going on, the GOP primary circus has been the main focus of discussion here. What a bunch of misanthropes and nere-do-wells! What bush called “the evil doers!”
Kilgore, man, it seems like the Right is unloading the closet with all of the venom they have stored up. There are times when the things they say and do even surprise me.
My hope is that we are watching the final days of that kind of mindset, and the better “angels” will step up and set us on a new and more positive path.
They really have stored up the venom and now they don’t even try to hide it. Some of the things these cretins say and may actually believe is astounding, and not the good kind of astounding, like a joyful wonder, but an amazement at just how low people can sink in their quests for money and power.
I’m with you all the way, maybe their time IS coming to an end. Then America can get on with being a better and more just country. Civilization can actually be “civil.”
Well, good Morning JM Brodie! Welcome to PlanetPOV. Good to see you again. It was getting too difficult to find the good guys over at HP. This is all good
Happy to be “home” again. HP is nice, but it has its limits…
Mr Brodie
How spooky to see you here again. Just the other night I was searching on here for a particular article and I ran into one you wrote awhile ago on being pulled over by the police. I was thinking geez I wonder how he is doing. I very seldom go to HP so I never see you there. Good to see you again. Maybe you caught my vibes LOL.
Hey, Sue! I am still around. Glad to see you too, my friend. Every now and then I need to come home to get my head together… 🙂
It is always nice to see a balanced and positive review of President Obama. It seems so often all we get is the opposite. It is no wonder the Southern Poverty Law Center has seen a dramatic increase in militia groups. The only thing that keeps me from giving up hope completely is realizing there are many people who are not buying the negative feed from MSM.
It shouldn’t be surprising but ABC News has another anti-Obama propaganda article out, posing as news.
So somehow, a corporation that made a profit of $7.6 billion last year couldn’t possibly have spent any of that on this investment and instead reached into a separate vault that holds only taxpayer bailout money and took the entire $400 million from there.
How is this anything like journalism? Claiming all the money used was taxpayer money?
As the saying goes, at ABC News there are liars and damn liars.
As you pointed out no government money was needed for this buyout obviously. This is sort of what I call the guilt by association media we have today. Once you have any part of a bailout you the lame MSM associates you with the bailout forever. Even when that so called bailout makes money for taxpayers like the GM bailout will many times over and in many ways starting with the taxes GM and it’s employees pay. Think about the hole in the deficit letting GM fail would have created in the national coffers for years to come.
I think this also falls under intentionally trying to mudsling at Obama. This hack at ABC (All BS Corp) News knows full well that what he was saying was a lie. It’s a clear case of trying to smear Obama and pass it off as fact.
What a farce “news” is today.
Oh, the irony! What you should know about the lead plaintiff in the challenge to Obama’s ACA that the SCOTUS is deciding on:
http://www.latimes.com/health/la-na-healthcare-plaintiff-20120309,0,6657163.story
So…this loon goes bankrupt and forces hospitals and doctors to pick up her medical bills, raising the fees they charge to people with insurance…and claims to have a right to force everyone else to pay her bills!
And she’s the best they’ve got!
She sounds just like this woman I saw interviewed on CNN the other day — a “democrat” who was supporting Santorum because she has a disabled child and Obama doesn’t seem to care about disabled children (it was the interviewer who suggested this was her reason — I think she was just a racist).
I say if the mandate is struck down fine. Then government should strike down the ER room mandate as well. So if you don’t have insurance and go to the ER you have to pay your bill right away or be put in healthcare debt prison.
Of course I am joking but that’s the problem we have in this country when ER’s have a mandate to treat you and we don’t have universal insurance coverage. So for all the people that can’t afford the outrageous ER bills, everyone else’s insurance pays for them. That’s exactly what happened when these people filing the lawsuit went bankrupt. The individual mandate is just taking personal responsibility to it’s ultimate conclusion but with all the subsidies most families would end up paying much less than in the old system.
Now, if only you could fit that on a bumpersticker.
This is exactly what I find so frightening about so many Americans. Whether it is healthcare, worker’s rights, or the environment it seems Americans go against their own best interests. On top of it most of them are hypocrites like this woman.
It is some type of grand illusion? I still don’t understand it.
Hey Adlib, Thanks for posting this. Allow me to add a few items that just happened today, sent out by National Wildlife Federation —
* Keystone XL Pipeline: REJECTED!
This amendment would have overturned President Obama’s decision to reject the Keystone XL tar sands oil pipeline–bypassing the environmental review process and giving Congress unprecedented authority to hand out a permit for this dangerous project. The pipeline would put endangered whooping cranes and critical resources at risk of toxic oil spills and drive a rapid expansion of habitat-destroying tar sands operations that could put the lives of thousands of wolves and other wildlife at risk.
* RESTORE Act: PASSED!
The RESTORE Act ensures that Clean Water Act penalties collected from those responsible for the BP oil disaster be dedicated to Gulf Coast restoration–a big win for brown pelicans and other wildlife impacted by the spill. This historic amendment also includes significant authorization and funding for the Land and Water Conservation Fund and the National Endowment for the Oceans, both essential programs to protect key wildlife habitat and natural resources.
* Arctic Drilling: REJECTED!
This amendment would have opened new leases for oil and gas drilling in pristine Arctic wilderness–putting ringed seals at needless risk of potential oil disasters, while boosting Big Oil’s billions of dollars in profits. It would have also drastically expanded offshore drilling into vast new areas of our coastline, including the Atlantic Ocean, the California Coast, eastern Gulf of Mexico and Bristol Bay in Alaska.
Thanks for adding these, Escribacat!
We should keep a running list of accomplishments and attacks on Americans that were blocked by Obama (let’s not forget Obama and Dems in the Senate blocking the Ryan plan to kill Medicare!).
Just as young women are learning today that voting Republicans into power in states means that they can lose their rights that they’ve taken for granted, all Americans need to recognize that much of what Obama’s accomplished, from ending DADT to the ACA could all be reversed if the Repubs won the WH or had veto-proof majorities in Congress.
This is a huge election this year that will have an enormous effect on our future. We have to win this (and hopefully retake all of Congress) and we have to work as hard as necessary to do so.
Great list AdLib a sure fire keeper.
The amazing part to me about Obama is how consistent he is with not only his positions but his personality. He has to be the most comfortable man I’ve ever seen in his own skin. Nothing rattles him and considering the hate spewed at him every day from the right wing that’s beyond incredible. Issues are important to me but I think Obama brought back true character to the Democratic Party. I’ve noticed he’s being a great example for Dems and I’m so happy that there is no BS Dems feel the need defend if you know what I mean.
Really like the way you’re framing this, KQuark! Obama is exemplifying the combination of principles, intelligence, reason, decision making and consistency that is an ideal representation of the Democratic Party.
He is an incredibly remarkable man and frankly, I dont know how he does it!
I would’ve blown up at Cantor and Boehner a long time ago and told the media in a press conference, when asked what I thought of all the insults thrown at me by the GOP candidates, I’d say, “What do you expect from the contestants in a Douche-Off?”
I guess I wouldn’t make the best Presidential candidate…unless I ran as a Republican! Hey if Mitt can flip flop, why can’t I run as a stealth Dem in the GOP and just lie my way to the WH then flip and reveal I’m a Dem?!
That’s the rub with Romney isn’t it. He’s most electable because at one time he held all the positions a centrist Dem would.
I’m just amazed how the GOP is throwing out the whole character issue this time with Romney. Remember Repubs were suppose to like strong leaders who had principles over just about any other value like intelligence and management skills, ala Bush.
In many ways Romney is the antithesis of Obama. Romney will radically changes his positions on several key issues like birth control, abortion, stimulus spending, healthcare mandates, etc… sometimes on an hourly basis. He is totally afraid to face anyone who will not be a yes man to his whims. To rewrite history Romney even edits out the bad parts of editorials even when a publication endorses him. I think that comes from his ‘boss’ background because in modern business all CEOs are surrounded by are yes people. Could you imagine Romney doing an interview with Rachel Maddow, Ed Schultz, Al Sharpton or even Chris Matthews? While Obama has done two interviews with O’Reilly and other people at Faux News.
I’m not saying Obama does not evolve on issues he does through time. Actually Sullivan explained the difference between an Obama evolution and Romney flip flop pretty well today.

Thanks for putting the list together AdLib, it impresses the heck out of me to think that with all of the stonewalling by some in his own Party, and meaningless obstructionism from the GOPTP, he has accomplished so much in such a short time.
Then I shake my head as I always do when I think of the people who will vote against this man out of fear, ignorance and pure hate, willing to let your country fall into utter shambles as they vote for incompetence, lies and more hate. It boggles the mind, and I feel no sympathy for these misguided people as I might have once, it has now been replaced with contempt that they would pull you all down into the cesspit with them. There is no excuse for blatant stupidity, no excuse at all.
Kalima, I don’t suffer fools either and I will leave it to those more patient than I am to try and convince the ignorant not to vote against their own interest and those of the nation’s.
Racism and religious bigotry is often found in such GOP voters, a smaller percentage supports them due to their economic agenda because it only benefits the top 1%. They may say that’s why they vote Republican but it’s just a way to cloak their prejudice.
They announced today that since Obama was elected, and it’s not a surprise, hate groups have hugely multiplied. Under Bush, they declined.
What a coincidence!
Of course hate groups are on the increase, you only have to remember some of the comments left up on HP during the 08′ primaries to see when they started coming out of the woodwork, and way before he was elected. These people still can’t get past the abolition of slavery, never mind the Civil Rights Act, and if they could, they would happily introduce apartheid in your country. I doubt that any of them can be convinced to change their minds about who to vote for, the 2008 elections proved that to me, but if people want to waste their time trying, who am I to judge.
I still believe that you have a choice whether you are to become brainwashed or not, we all have that choice. Dumb fools don’t even know how they are being used over and over again by the GOP. I believe it’s a civil duty to vote, and anyone who doesn’t to make sure that these useless creeps don’t win in November, is letting down over 300 million Americans in one go, I don’t think I could live with myself after that.
I peeked at Politico and the hate mongers live there as well. No shortage. I did also watch CNBC this am and two companies desperate to hire couldn’t find enough people with technical manufacturing skill–vocational skills. Thank you Santorum, Bush et al for hating education. They have so many things to hate, their heads must spin like in the “Exorcist”. Lovely people.
Hi foodchain, makes you wonder if these people actually have to work for a living, they seem to haunt the blogs for most of the day. Some of them sound like stupid kids earning a dollar for each comment posted, as was the case with HP in 08′. The others are so full of hate, it’s a wonder that they just don’t combust all over their keyboards. Then you have the various “pros” just out there to misinform who are payed by groups supporting the trash on the other side. After a time it just gets so predictable and boring, that’s one of the reason I left HP at the beginning of 09′ and never looked back. I don’t read comments on news articles if I can help it, I remember just how painful my 6 months with a duodenal ulcer was. Thanks, but no thanks.
I know Kalima. I scan some things just to get a feel for the “state of the unreal” but can’t stay beyond a glimpse; I’d go crazy. What does that say about them? Hah! Rehtorical
What it says about them to me is that they must be either very well off, too dumb to vote, or living on a different planet from me. Maybe it’s all three, who knows, and more to the point, who cares when you are living in a day to day reality.
If everyone who can vote does vote, the President will win in November. I see these clowns getting excited by their wins in different states, but the number of votes they get are very low, nothing to become that excited about.
It is a sad fact that HP has been a collaborator in whipping up the hatred and extremism out there.
The syndrome of modern day racism has more to do with the insecurity of the ignorant white rural male than anything else.
With good paying blue collar jobs destroyed by the same Repubs these people vote into power, they are frustrated and angry that being white and male is no longer good enough to be superior to most other people.
So, they find all kinds of charades to go through that give them cover for their racism and sexism but it’s all about feelings of inferiority and impotence.
The good news is that they are a minority, not as small as we would wish but they can’t win elections on their own.
In 2010, they lucked out because the fickle indie voters voted for Repubs only to throw a slap at the Dems and Obama for not making it rain M&Ms and invent money machines.
This year though, after getting a taste of what Repubs do when given power, they won’t be so lucky.
We will have to fight hard to counter the anti-Obama propaganda that the wealthy will be throwing at indie voters to brainwash them to vote Republican (AKA: against their own interests) but in the end, I think we will prevail.
I’m sure you will prevail too. If any Indie would still vote for the faux trash on parade, then they need to get back to the Repub Party, and stop fooling themselves that they are in any way different from them.
I think there’s a section in the ACA that covers free mental contraception for those who vote Republican.
Faux trash? Nah, they are genuine, authentic trash! 😉
Hey KT, I guess I should have stuck with my original thought of “steaming piles of shait”. 🙂
Kalima, That would work too.
One more thing, but I’m not sure it was a promise.
He has restored the USA to a great country again. Also he has made friends respect us more than under “w”.
So Adlib they may not have been promises but they are accomplishments.
Nirek, good point, there are a number of meaningful accomplishments that can and should be added to those he promised.
Saving the auto industry, restoring respect for and positive feelings towards the US from the rest of the world, helping bring down Gaddafi, dropping government support for DOMA, etc.
He has already accomplished more than most Presidents…though following what was possibly the worst President in American history, who so severely damaged this nation, there was an urgency and opportunity to make big things happen.
Hard to imagine how the US and world could be in a devastating depression right now had McCain and Palin won the Presidency but based on McCain’s policy positions, with no stimulus and no auto bailout…we’d be living in hell right now.
People do need to think about that when they consider who to vote for in Nov, 4 more years of the kind of improvements to the nation that Obama has brought or a return to Bush policies on steroids.
Please, everyone knows that he’s thrown Israel under the bus and our European allies laugh at us. The GOP tells us so all the time.
Now W? Yeah, the rest of world really respected him. 😆
Yes they really respected W so much that they laid rose thorns at his feet and threw shoes at his head. 🙂
In the rest of the world, throwing shoes at the head of another nation’s leader and burning him in effigy on a daily basis is how they say, “R-E-S-P-E-C-T, find out what it means to me.”
AdLib, Tom Hanks is the narrator in this documentary. Judging from the trailer, this doc looks extremely well done. People need to be reminded about just what this president has accomplished, especially when having to deal with a republican Congress that has vowed to see the president fail.
We’ve been having to be surrounded by the GOP talking points that simply fabricate lies about who Obama is and what has happened in this country under him. We absolutely need a reality check for the public and this looks to be just what the doctor ordered.
Thanks AdLib for the great info and I can’t wait to see the documentary.
Just a word of caution re Politifact: Recently they have been discredited by several people including Rachel Maddow for inaccuracies in the “truth” – to “pants on fire” ratings.
Sabreen, yes, I know about Politifact and I no longer trust their judgment on what’s true or not, it’s become completely corrupt.
As to listing which promises Obama has kept, they seem to be relatively accurate in this area and have one of the more extensive lists online so I used them in this instance.
I’m looking forward to the documentary as well, I have a feeling it will be mighty popular!
This video was posted here a few months ago and I bookmarked it for just such an occasion as this thread;
I remember, very much on target video and right now, I’ll bet he feels very differently, not a voice in the wilderness but one joined in chorus by more and more.
I would certainly hope so. He presented his views (and facts) with eloquence. He really makes the nay sayers look like the willfully ignorant cretins they are.
Let’s hope there are enough people that look at the facts, and ignore the Republican spin, on Obama’s record. We in this country tend to have a very short attention span when it comes to politics. How many of us remember how close we were to economic collapse just before Obama took office? What would have happend if we had allowed General Motors to go Chapter 11, as they nearlt did? Romney has said publicly that we should have let GM collapse, and I wonder how Michigan feels about that?
jjgravitas, that’s exactly what I’m thinking, people may have already forgotten how close the country was to falling off a far bigger cliff when Obama came in.
And with all the propaganda circulating for years, many may have forgotten all that Obama has accomplished.
We do have to keep reminding people of how far we’ve come since the corrupt Bush was in the White House in 2008 and the nation was speeding towards near-certain destruction.
As for MI, polls are already showing that it’s now in Obama’s column so far. The people in those states know what Obama did to save the US auto industry and that Romney wanted it to fail and die.
So far, so good for Obama’s re-election.
