Republicans are pushing government towards a shutdown if they can’t take health care and rights away from women. Today’s theme for the Music Thread is a push back against that, songs about respect for and the strength of women.
Respect – Aretha Franklin
I Am Woman – Helen Reddy
Sisters Are Doin’ It For Themselves – Eurythmics
Woman – John Lennon
Born This Way – Lady Gaga
Your turn!
I forgot Maanam: Whose That Lipstick On The Glass (I couldn’t find the English version I had earlier, but this is the original)
Joni Mitchell–Hejira;
Tori Amos, ft. James Maynard Keenan – Muhammad, My Friend

Tori Amos – God

I still can’t believe the statistical improbability that no women here listen to Tori… it’s like the first time that’s ever happened. 😛
Eurythmics–I Saved The World Today;
Time to step it up a bit. Melissa Etheridge–Like The Way I Do;
Here’s a slightly different Annie Lennox: Bridge Over Troubled Waters
Truth, I like it. She puts the right emotion into that great song.
Cassandra Wilson–Love Is Blindness;
Laura Nyro–Stoned Soul Picnic;
I’ve run out of suffragett songs, so I’ll just play beautiful songs done by women. Roberta Flack–The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face;
I never understood anything else than to post wonderful songs from or about women…. thanks for reminding me of Roberta Flack. Now I finally found a rap-free version of Killing Me Softly With His song:
Yeah, she has such a great voice, and her songs are beautiful.
Indeed! Glad you brought her up again – somehow she escaped my attention earlier in life.
I’m an old romantic.
Joni–Woman of Heart and Mind;
Laura Nyro–Woman of the World;
Joy of Cooking–Warrior Women;
Joni–Song for Sharon;
Talk about female power!
Wagner – Die Walküre Act 3 – Ride of the Valkyries
You Go Girls!

This youtube isn’t related at all, at least I don’t think so, but it’s another one of my absolute favorite songs of all time – yet it’s not available on any CD or album.
I love Sheryl Crow and love Sting –
And Norah Jones, well, she reminds us of our daughter that was killed in 2003 and we both so love Norah Jones – and if you could see our daughter’s pic and if you could have heard her play guitar and sing, I think that you’d think so, too.
We’ll never get over losing her, but life goes on, but my GOD, how we miss her so very much.
Both wonderful songs, javaz. And so very sorry to hear about the loss of your daughter.
(PS: Sherryl Crow/Sting should be available, it says underneath the video:
