Evolve or Perish

You are very, very, kind, VegasBabe.

Hi Boomer! Thanks for your comments. Our civilization is definitely at a tipping point now, and I just hope we tip the right way. It’s easy to become discouraged though…..

Thanks very much, AdLib. I really appreciate that!

That’s an interesting thought, Lise. I submitted my TeaBagger parody (the post I put up last week) to the NYT OpEd page, but never heard back. But I’m going to keep trying!

Thank you. Yes, I know it’s not good to be stuck in anger, but it is so difficult not to be. Everything about this event, and the more we learn about it, it seems that the only natural response is to scream and sob like a three year old throwing a tantrum in response to watching her parents squabble.

cheers.

Thanks, nottoolate. That’s what it is – unchecked greed. Sick and appalling.

I’m not syndicated. I would love to reach a larger audience, though. I appreciate your encouragement.

Thanks, Pepe. Whenever I’ve run posts here they’ve been my illustrations accompanying them.

Thanks, choicelady. I had it in my head to write an essay about the disaster, but eventually opted to just put a visual up. I think there is so much frustration right now about this, and feelings of impotent rage. We want changes. We are appalled at how preventable this tragedy was. I’m sick about this. That is all, ultimately, any essay by me would say. So, I figured, just the picture.

I do plan to exhibit them in Tokyo eventually. I’ll be sure to hold a “virtual exhibition” here as well.

Thanks, Lise!

So sad, and so true, KQ. We are in deep trouble.

» Posted By whatsthatsound On May 4, 2010 @ 4:36 pm

It’s not a photo.

» Posted By whatsthatsound On May 4, 2010 @ 4:35 pm

Yes, that is it. Thank you, Kesmarn.

» Posted By whatsthatsound On May 4, 2010 @ 4:35 pm

Me too; just angry. We may not have perished, but we’ve very nearly become a society of death. We need the eightfold path, but are ruled by the seven deadly sins, greed first and foremost.

thanks, Q

In Condescending Order

I understand, Boomer. And you’re right that I do have the distance of having lived elsewhere for twenty years. I hesitated to write anything, but then, I thought, this is Planet POV, and we should feel free to express our points of view, even when that is to be critical of things others here have written. I just don’t like it when people are reduced to caricatures. First of all, because it is never true. It may make someone feel good to use curse words, call someone a “whore” etc., but what is accomplished by that?

» Posted By whatsthatsound On May 4, 2010 @ 8:58 pm

Thank you, Cher!

» Posted By whatsthatsound On May 3, 2010 @ 7:23 pm

Perhaps. But this is my, possibly pompous (but then so be it), attempt to call my compatriots here at POV out on all the catty put downs. Life’s too short.

Man! You guys!
– Blondie, “Rip Her to Shreds”

(Heypsst psst, here she comes now.)
Oh, you know her.
Would ya look at that hair!
Yeah, you know her,
Check out those shoes.
She looks like she stepped out of the middle of somebody’s blues.
She looks like the Sunday comics!
She thinks she’s Brenda Starr.
Her nose job is real atomic…
all she needs is an old knife scar!
Ehhh, she’s so dull, come on rip her to shreds.
She’s so dull, come on rip her to shreds.
Oh, you know her, “Miss Groupie Supreme”!
Yeah, you know her, “Vera Vogue” on parade.
Red eye shadow!
Green mascara!
Yuck.
She’s too much.
She looks like she don’t know better.
A case of partial extreme.
Dressed in a Robert Hall sweater.
Acting like a soap opera queen…
Ehhh, she’s so dull, come on rip her to shreds.
She’s so dull, come on rip her to shreds.
She got the nerve to tell me she’s not “on it”
But her expression is too serene…
Yeah, she looks like she washes with Vomit!
Always looking to create a scene…
Ehhh, she’s so dull, come on rip her to shreds.
She’s so dull, come on rip her to shreds.
She’s so dull.
Rip her to shreds!
Oh, you know her, “Miss Groupie Supreme”.
Yeah, you know her, “Vera Vogue” on parade.
Yeah, you know her, with the fish eating grin…
She’s so dull.
Yeah, she got the nerve to tell me!
Huh, she’s so… dull…
Yeah, there she goes now.
She making out with King Kong!
She take her boat to Hong Kong.
Well, bye bye sugar!
And not a minute too soon.

What’s Dead is Alive Again

I think it all turns on how it is contextualized. If the parents tell the kids that they are going to sleep with Grandma’s soul so that she won’t be afraid as she makes her transition, the children might actually feel good about it.

ba dum dum!

What a topic, Q, and such strange photos! Wow! In Japan, it is customary for immediate family members, including the lil’ones, to sleep in the same room, alongside the deceased, until the funeral. By our thinking, we might assume it is to impress upon people the transience of life, but I am pretty sure the Japanese don’t see it that way at all. I think it’s more the feeling that the deceased person has not fully made the transition, and wants to have his/her family around until that happens. So although it might, and frequently does, scare the children, it’s not really about them, but about the needs of the departed. On the other hand, as a foreigner, it’s probably more accurate to confess that I don’t fully understand the practice,

Chuck E. Cheese Meets Huffington Post

yes, yes! In Japanese, it’s “watashi no ude wo hanishite hoshi! Onegaishimasu!” I get that all the time.

» Posted By whatsthatsound On April 30, 2010 @ 1:55 am

Tell me about it! I live in Japan, remember? The question often asked in my presence is, “Does he bite?”

» Posted By whatsthatsound On April 30, 2010 @ 12:52 am

Not in that order, of course. You have to “tie the knot” before you can become an animal’s husband.

There are three badges: the Foosball Badge, the Hendrix playing “The Star Spangled Banner” at Woodstock Badge, and the Superhero Grabbing His Crotch Badge. I have no idea what they’re good for, but the Hendrix one is the coolest looking.

Bad Company

First rate, AdLib! Napolean’s ultimate put down of arch nemesis Britain was to call it a “nation of shopkeepers”. We’re on our way to becoming a nation of Willy Lomans, and that’s a lot worse.

How Do You Take Your Tea?

Just one more and then I’ll call it a song:

B’s for Borders that he won’t patrol;
L’s for Lenders he put on the dole;
A, shout out to ACORN, dabbling in kiddie porn, and
C’s for Competition,THAT’S the thing his program’s missin’
K is for this Kool Aid I’m drinking,
B-L-A-C-K is really not my thing!
