I was a high school senior from Washington State in 1954, and those horrifying hearings became the primary catalyst which propelled me into becoming an active lifelong progressive democrat. At the time it seemed to us that our country was becoming a fascist state overnight. The “loyalty oath”, which was already required of all Washington State public employees prior to the hearings, acquired a new clause in 1955 (after the hearings) which required signators to pledge under oath that they weren’t “subversive persons”. It wasn’t until 1964 after protracted legal battles over several years that the ACLU along with the American Association of University Professors finally successfully argued before the supreme court that the oath requirement was unconstitutional. This led to the rest of the nation following suit. Murrow really was a hero wasn’t he? Have you seen the 2005 film, “Good Night and Good Luck? George Cloony produced it and played Murrow’s character working his way through the bureaucracy in order to air the truth about the whole chilling McCarthy story. A great film! Back then, there were only three networks and most right wing commentators were on the radio. Their rhetoric paled in comparison to the lies being disseminated today. Paul Harvey and Billy Graham come to mind as being the most noteworthy – and reminds me that the Christian requirement back then was even more blatant than it is now. There definitely wasn’t the polarization then as exists now, but this was pre-civil rights. In a few more years, we finally broke out of the cage, made equal the law, and too many still can’t get over it. Friends my age send me those “remember when” emails extolling the happy times of the “50’s” and they really make me gag. Your heroes today are also mine – Moyers also at the top of the heap. Yet in my view, by dismissing Sander’s petition (something the unwashed, relatively uninformed public can actually get behind) as redundant and too time consuming makes our common cause weaker. I signed it and hope others do – simply because Sander’s name carries a lot of weight and we need HUGE public support on this issue. His petition is now over 80K. The following is from a post I just made on ProPublica where I express hopes for a commonality in vision and action: “To generate the greatest support and response possible, my greatest hope is that ALL reform-minded political action groups will eventually get together under one umbrella for the purpose of sharing information on petition drives and courses of action for common issues. ProPublica doesn’t fall into this category since it’s investigative and maintains a neutral position. As a product of the 40’s and an extreme activist of the 60’s, I’m of the view that if we see something growing that shows promise, we just have to jump in and be a part of it instead of overly parsing its potential future value. The “Arab Spring” reference is perfect! It’s only through OVERWHELMING support (really HUGE numbers) that change is forced – and change always lags due to the opposing forces Killgore Trout refers to. (It always looks really, really bad before the opposition collapses enough for it to get better. What these Asshats in control don’t seem to grasp is that the current movement is pretty tame and civilized. If this fails, and given that our bought and paid for corporate government is still in control, it’s only a matter of time before the well-armed, less informed and leaderless pitchfork crowd takes to the streets.
