As hard as their lives are, and they are VERY hard, they have humor, kindness, and hope running through their veins. I am helping one man reunite with his family. They weren’t estranged but did lose touch with one another, and thanks to the internet, I found them and got them talking. They love him and he them, and he’s going home. Everyone there is dirt poor, but love abounds. He’d left to find work bu instead found the streets, but they all know they’re better together than apart. Others celebrate this with and for him. Every victory – however small – at getting off the street is a huge wonderfulness for them all. If the poorest of our poor can have this much fellow-feeling, the rest of us need to snap out of it. We call them Certified Enrollment Counselors employed by an Enrollment Entity. The paranoia is probably NOT misplaced since anyone can then access confidential personal info, but the exam ought to be specific, NOT general, since the standards are quite exacting for ACA and no longer include private insurance. However, the requirements in CA include a criminal background check AND fingerprinting, both of which have to be paid for by the individual applying and add up to a considerable chunk o’ change. He declared via a Tweet sent BEFORE he tried, that signing up for health care was a ‘train wreck’. Then, he went to the site, called a Certified Enroller, put her on hold for 35 minutes while he fiddled with the healthcare.gov site, and voila – enrolled his own damned self in 45 minutes. Then I think he hung up on the Enroller, but hey… He was fool enough to have witnesses with cameras, so his ‘train wreck’ did occur, but it was his STORY, not healthcare.gov. It worked great as it has been for weeks and got him enrolled in under an hour. NOW can the media tell the truth about healthcare.gov? They were witness to its success. Let’s see if the story goes beyond MSNBC, Twitter, and this blog. Since some reside very far from hospitals and physicians, more money was directed to local clinic care in those distant areas – the first some people have really had in a long time. I do policy. I don’t have a clue when it comes to posting. Sigh… The figures are quite impressive. MA had ONLY 123 people by the end of the first month, and I think that should tell us a lot. MORE to the point, Medicare Part D was considered a major disaster for its complexity, failure of that web site, lack of clarity, poor linkages to pharmacies, meds, your needs. Moreover – there was NO plan to pay for it. ACA has used ALL the precedents to avoid those troubles. It is horrifying to me that almost no major media have talked about the sabotage of healthcare.gov. I have used that site since it went up, July 2010. A few of our own folks got their coverage under the High Risk Pool through the site – it worked fine. Partly it was overwhelmed by sheer demand. Partly it was sabotaged. I for one hope the DOJ hunts those cyberterrorists and brings them to accounting. They are Americans hurting other Americans. What gall! So we will keep on keepin’ on. I get updates regularly from the state and federal sources and will keep you all posted now and then on developments. Anyone needing care and in a state without an Exchange can now pretty freely use healthcare.gov. All the sites save Oregon are working well. I once saw a draft copy of the Declaration written in Jefferson’s own hand with lines crossed out – notably the abolition of slavery. He did NOT get that, nope. And indigenous people? I would like to say that within the mainline Protestant denominations and from them to all other faiths and non believers there is an amazing dialogue about what we share, how we differ, and how to respect the latter when it occurs. We have a poster in our office – a large organization supporting mainline, progressive social justice advocacy – that shows you are spot on: EVERY faith tradition has the rule of ‘do unto others…’. That is the absolute core of each faith. Now – the problem is living UP to that common value! The only time I reject others’ views is when that is not present or has been reserved for “members only” of any specific religion or faith tradition. Fundamentalism is the “sheep v goats” litmus testing of rules adhered to that separate us one from the other. Holistic faith is inclusive. As people we may not be, but that IS its goal. Anything that is rigidly separatist is not faith but a club. It does not meet its own test of “do unto others.” Your quest is shared by hundreds of millions, and it is breaking barriers, tearing down walls, ending ancient enmities. Some day we will look back on this historic period as one of powerful re-formation equal to the Great Schism, the Protestant Reformation, all large changes in who we are, what we believe. I hope it will move your direction and mine. That is rather up to us. But move it will. Bush’s National guard commander wrote a document delineating Bush’s absence from service. The accusation of falsehood of that letter hinged on the use of an IBM Elite Selectric typewriter supposedly not available until AFTER the document from Bush’s commander had been typed. This is the most horrifying lie EVER because California State University (then college) at Dominguez Hills President’s office used them the SAME YEAR that the document had been prepared – 1971. I worked in the President’s office, USED the typewriter, and I know that as FACT. We all hated them because they had proportional spacing making correct a major headache. These IBM Elite typewriters were in common use in government agencies at EXACTLY the time the National Guard letter about Bush was written. I tried to contact Rather, CBS, IBM – and was rebuffed at every turn. I never could make contact with Rather. He did not have a false document. He had a real one. And THAT is when I knew CBS had once again thrown a major employee under the bus. They did this with impunity during the McCarthy years, firing staffers on the say-so of Joe McCarthy’s charges – never mind the absence of any proof. FINALLY they have been forced to admit their own lies. Do I think they were duped? Nope. I think they were co-conspirators in a story once again designed to make this president look bad. The history reveals a pattern of CBS’s complicity with disinformation, lies, coverups for powerful people, abetting the most extreme forces in America.
