We must be our own advocates, and we should always have someone who can pick up the slack when we’re unable. I wound up in the ER several years ago. I kept telling them I was sure it was my gallbladder and the doctors just stared at me. Kept telling me why it wasn’t — because all the tests were coming back negative. The yahoos decided to keep me overnight for observation; did one more test at 7 the next morning. Came back at 9 and told me they were going to release me because they couldn’t find anything. Well, I was on Dilaudid for pain and had just had a full dose. I told them I was refusing to go home, had them call my family doc (who sent me to the ER to begin with) and my surgeon from a previous operation. When I said call my surgeon, I got, “You have a surgeon?” I said you’re damn straight I do. They found her, she came to see me, had me admitted, and added me to her surgery schedule that day. Mr. Dilaudid and I had a wonderful afternoon. I was released the next day, but when the doc came to see me right before she signed me out, she told me it was a good thing I refused to leave. My gallbladder was so diseased that had I gone home it would’ve ruptured, and I would’ve been dead within 48 hours. I hate it when they (the docs) think we’re stupid and don’t know our own bodies well enough to know when something just ain’t right. Jeeze!
