I was pretty young during that time, but my mother made it clear to all of us what was at stake. It was not real to us at the time because we lived in a predominantly “white” area however when we moved to a more diverse area, Richmond CA, it became very relevant. I saw the injustice up close and personal. A young black student had been the victim of “corporal punishment” that ended in a split in his skull and the counselor involved would not accept responsibility or apologize to the student or his family. He, in fact, issued a racial slur against the student that really inflamed the already tense atmosphere and it started with the letter N. It started a major riot but not student against student, it was about the school authorities who closed ranks around him. It is funny though, the “scary” Black Panthers that stood outside our school, were anything but scary. They were polite, helpful in getting us in and out of the school and generally just guardians. Despite the rhetoric we heard from other sources, I never once felt threatened by them, just the opposite I felt they protected us and let it be known whatever fight they had was with school officials and not the students. The actions of these people are in the words of Clyburn “beyond the pale”. Republicans around the country are inciting this shit (no other word for it) and they will pay the end price. They are intentionally trying to start a war in this country and I am not sure what, if anything, the FBI or SS is doing about it. It appears to me like nothing is being done.
