First off, your story is exactly why I often find my blinker fluid is empty. Years ago, before I was thrown (of my own choice) in to a commuter traffic situation, I gave a guy I worked with a ride back to Walnut Creek from a meeting we attended in the city. As we got to the tunnel that separated the east bay from the valley, I turned on my blinker to merge in to the lanes the tunnel allowed. Right away, people sped up and would not let me in. My passenger, who lived in Mill Valley and commuted to WC every single day, told me “you never put on your blinker, just slowly cut in front of them”. It drives my husband crazy but I find my blinker fluid empty a lot of the time lol. Your little accident is a great analogy of the Trump voter and I think, even if they finally realize they were grifted, they will still not ever admit it. The next four years are going to be hell and right now I still believe Republicans will win again in 2 years, 4 years, 6 years and that is because Democrats don’t vote, especially in mid terms. Republicans also have the voter suppression tactics down to a science, too bad that science does not extend to a clean environment. I try not to be so Debbie Downer but it is what I see. And in this election, there were the third parties that further mucked it up. The DNC needs to go back to it’s roots but it won’t come from many in Congress. The DSCC could not even manage to support the Dem in the Louisiana Special Election. I have no doubt most of those rides were intentional. What I don’t understand is how police departments can be so blind to the problems within their ranks. There is, in my mind, absolutely no excuse for the behavior and the tolerance of such behavior. One thing the police could do to make amends and prevent future problems is to seriously open up Community Policing. In areas where it has been practiced, the cities have seen a dramatic decrease in crime. People who really want to commit a crime, are going to do it, Community Policing or not. But, and that is a big but, Community Policing has been proven over and over to work. Richmond CA is a very good example of police reaching out to the community. There has been a dramatic reduction in crime and people who are most likely to eventually get involved are cut off at the pass as they are asked, and rewarded, for participating. I was especially struck dumb by the reduction in settlements as I was not aware that happened. It tells me the initial announcement of a settlement is an “appeasement” for the public to go on about their business. I do believe that the 1% is involved, to some extent, in the radicalization of police in this country. I personally think it is in preparation for the 98% uprising, if the people ever really get fed up. That is not looking like it is going to happen anytime soon. Quite honestly, I wonder if they are practicing on the people they think people will care less about? I am most satisfied with what we are doing in our town. We are reaching people from all areas when they come to our farmer’s market. Average attendance on a weekly basis is 4000 people from our area, not just our town, so we are reaching a wide group of people. They then reach others, that is how the ripple starts. And we now have a table for Bernie by the community garden since we cannot campaign directly. Our first week we passed out 150 fliers and spoke with many people, plus actively registered people to vote. So I spend half my night at each table. I get really irritated when people downplay the danger of theocracy and what it means in this country. Anyone who looks around should be able to see it in local, state and national politics so I do something about it. I am not asking others to do it but I am always happy to have helpers like Wanita Panza, for instance or you as well. There are others, too, who have taken up the cause and not one of us likes it when that cause is treated as if our work on it is not worth the time or actually refuses to believe it is happening. Talk about blind. Living where I do, I was very close to the demonstrations in Berkeley in the 60’s. Having a brother in college and people I worked for that were involved, gave me a pretty good vantage point to know what real protest is all about. They did not ask others to do the work, they were out there in the streets. I went to a couple with my brother but mostly stayed at home watching their kids. That did not mean that they paid me and I went home, I talked to them about their work. I learned from those talks and I know it cannot all be done sitting at a computer. Another great post. I think you nailed it but I still have fears on the Dem side. I think we have a group that are so stuck on perfect idealism that they are going to sacrifice the vote to Trump.
