Oregon May Lead The Way On Automatic Voter Registration Brown’s plan, introduced in the state House last month, would allow Oregon to automatically register new voters at the time they apply for a driver’s license. Those new voters would initially be registered as unaffiliated with any political party. At a later date, they’d receive a postcard by mail allowing them to choose a party affiliation or opt out of voter registration altogether, should they desire. The state’s House Rules Committee held a hearing on the legislation last month, and Brown expects another one in the coming weeks. Under current Oregon law, residents must register (or update their registration) at least 25 days before the election or be shut out of the political process. Though voting rights advocates like the League of Women Voters of Oregon laud Brown’s idea, Republicans are skeptical that it should be easier to vote. This is a very serious issue and should be invested to the fullest. Any adjustment downward only opens the door to privatizing Social Security. No I do not want the “Baggers” in control. However, I don’t want people making decisions without listening to the people that will be effected personally or their parents that will be left to depend even greater on their children. This should not be part of the budget. These are earned benefits. I am afraid that the President may have endangered his own party in mid-terms with this. Many more are now thinking that neither party are looking out for them. I do not believe that of many of the Democrats but I am questioning the President’s actions.

In some states, the DMV asks people applying for driver’s licenses if they want to register to vote. If they say yes, they fill out a form on the spot indicating that choice, and they get registered. But the Oregon plan is different. About 500,000 eligible voters who aren’t registered — but are already in the DMV database — would automatically become registered in a process that would begin Jan. 1, 2014. Residents would automatically get registered when they get new driver’s licenses, and their voter registration would be updated when they update or renew those licenses.

Look, it took me two years to get my Social Security Disability and finally I needed an attorney. I was told that it wasn’t easy because they held down fraud that way. But, to hear the Republicans there is nothing but fraud in any benefits that the government provides, those so called entitlements. I have challenged many a person on that issue and how it would be hard to defraud. I am sure someone has but we are not talking millions. They are just making a campaign case for the Republicans. But, if I remember right, the Republicans held up the extension of benefits to the military not so long ago. Now they are the good guys???? And, no matter if it is speed-ed up it wasn’t fast enough. We are talking about 4 branches of services and each have their own way of doing things. Now, add the Department of Defense to the mix. I am sure there is an easier way but I am sure it isn’t any easier than the CIA having the same as the FBI and both cooperating on the mission.
One other thing, this is the longest war we have ever been involved in and the number of personnel. No we were not prepared to go into it, resolve it, leave it, and live with the aftermath of it. But, there was a lot of money made from it by private industry! Lots more lost from the government.
