Some truths about Cathy McMorris Rodgers The facts are she did not grow up on an orchard in Washington State. In fact, she really did not grow up in America at all. When Cathy was a toddler, her parents left Oregon with Cathy and her brother and settled in Hazelton in Northern British Columbia, Canada. There they lived in a cabin without indoor plumbing or electricity. After a while, the family drifted around Northern BC, home schooling Cathy and her brother, until Cathy was the age of a junior in high School student and it was then her family finally returned to the United States. Her father found a small orchard to rent in Kettle Falls and Cathy stayed for a year and then chose to attend the fundamentalist Pensacola Christian College, in Florida. While Cathy attended, it was unaccredited and only became accredited in 2013. The student handbook reads like something you would almost expect from the Taliban. Some of the strict rules are as follows: No dancing. Only approved music. Sexes should never study or be alone together and will be chaperoned between classes. Separate parking areas, entrances, stairs, and elevators for the sexes. Strict dress code, including no facial hair for men and women are not permitted to wear pants. Students will be in their rooms at 11pm and lights off at 11:15pm. Separate beaches for the sexes. Even students over 23, are not permitted to be in mixed groups after dark. No internet/ email access allowed. Cell phones cannot have internet access, and must be kept in vehicles. For me, 2013 went by quick. I don’t think I smelled enough roses along the way. I know I walked the path slower but didn’t spend enough time looking up, around, and down at all there was to see. Time is something once lost you can never find again no matter how hard you search. You just have to pray: just give me more time, just a little more time. It is up to you to make the bargaining worth it. So, here I am about to start a new year, 2014. Will I eat better, exercise, smell the roses, enjoy all around me, keep looking and exploring? Oh, hell, I don’t know. I hope I do. But, if given the time, I am going to try. If only I could slow the time to match my walk. It is a modern version (well in ’64 anyway) of the classic A Christmas Carol. As I was watching it, I kept saying: “Gee, we haven’t changed all that much….” Anyway, I was going to tell you about it but I will be darn if I didn’t find it on YouTube. So, if you get a chance, please watch it and see if you don’t see some familiar attitudes that remain today. Sorry, it is in Black & White but that how it was in ’64.

Crabb of the Western District of Wisconsin ruled that the so-called “parish exemption,” which allows religious ministers to avoid paying taxes on the value of their housing granted to them by their religious employers, “violates the establishment clause” of the U.S. Constitution and must be discontinued. The tax exemption was estimated to cost U.S. taxpayers $2.3 billion from 2002-2007 alone, likely more in the years since. It is DECLARED that 26 U.S.C. § 107(2) violates the establishment clause of the First Amendment to the United States Constitution. Defendants [the government] are ENJOINED from enforcing § 107(2). The injunction shall take effect at the conclusion of any appeals filed by defendants or the expiration of defendants’ deadline for filing an appeal, whichever is later. In other words, the ruling right now is on hold until the appeals process is complete. Over 2 million people have enrolled in health insurance plans through the federally run HealthCare.gov and state healthcare websites since enrollment began in October, U.S. officials said on Tuesday.
While the numbers of enrollees fall short of the 3.3 million enrollees the Obama administration was hoping for by the end of year, the number is a dramatic improvement from the early weeks of the program when barely 150,000 signed up for coverage through HealthCare.gov because of a series of technical problems.
The current irrational exuberance shifts the focus away from PE, or price-to-earnings ratios, a traditional measure of stock value. I call the new measure for stock values PR to reflect both the ratio of price to revenues as well as the sheen publicists get paid to put on goods and services that produce no profit.
Consider Facebook, which went public in May 2012. Its stock price has more than doubled this year. Its traditional PE stands at a whopping 113.
Founder Mark Zuckerberg just unloaded 41.4 million Facebook shares for $2.3 billion, ensuring that even if the stock price collapses, he will remain wealthy. Insider selling is, traditionally, a sign that a stock is overpriced.
Facebook makes money from advertising. I used it for several years before I even noticed the ads. I have yet to buy or even consider buying anything advertised on Facebook and am confident I am far from alone. General Motors at one point dropped Facebook, saying it could not connect a single sale to the social-media website.
Facebook has a PR of 26, its 2012 revenues totaling $5 billion and its shares outstanding valued at almost $132 billion. Amazon’s PR, by contrast, is just shy of 3.
Then there’s Twitter, which is flying higher than any bird ever has, suggesting it may run out of oxygen and fall to earth.
Twitter shares traded in recent days for as much as $74.73, close to three times its initial public offering price. That peak price values the company at more than $41 billion — yet through June 30, Twitter never made even a penny of profit.
At its peak price, Twitter sold at about 130 times its revenues, though its post-Christmas stock price lowered its PR to 112.
It’s bad enough that the financial press allows the inflated commentary of tech companies to go unchallenged. But why in the world should Americans tolerate hedge funds and other speculators being subsidized with cheap and easy credit, thanks to the Federal Reserve’s policy of near-zero interest rates?
Only speculators would buy companies with no profits. And only subsidized speculators would bid up prices on companies with a PR in three digits, like Twitter.
We now suffer through a prolonged period with high unemployment, flat to falling wages for most workers and unrealized potential for economic growth. But the speculators are making out like bandits, thanks to government suppression of interest rates, allowing massive borrowing by offshore hedge funds, and to lax rules for both accounting and trading.
Given the history of stock markets since 1995 and today’s blinking red indicators, no one can rationally claim they were not warned when the next collapse comes, as surely it will.

Obviously, her employer felt she failed at her duties by not presenting herself, thus their company, in a respectful way. I am sure she didn’t mean harm and was just joking with friends but she did put it out there for all to see. Now a days people really need to think before hitting send. It can come back to you in ways you never had contemplated. Also, when it comes to your employer, well, you are at their beck and call. It is a shame and I certainly feel for her losing her job.
And the third: The long game
Schwartz was one of only 22 House Democrats to support the bill, known as the Cooper-LaTourette budget plan, which only received 38 votes overall. She touted her vote for the bill in an announcement on her House website that she had received the “Economic Patriot Award” from the Concord Coalition, a deficit-reduction group co-founded by Pete Peterson. Peterson is a billionaire who has spent nearly half a billion dollars advocating for cuts to Social Security and other government programs as part of a campaign for austerity.
One study has estimated that in total, combined religious tax exemptions cost American taxpayers $71 billion each year.
